OJFord··on Man convicted of child sex crime by added _ char "Fus Ro Dah" Skyrim username
Thanks, it was:

> "This is not a situation where an acquittal is entered because the Crown has failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the essential elements of an offence or an error during the trial made the verdict unsafe," the appeal panel wrote.

That confused me – but I see now it's supposed to connect to the next paragraph (?!) – "it's not that there was procedural error, it's that he was completely innocent all along". (I do think it's written poorly, but I also haven't had a coffee yet..)

OJFord··on Man convicted of child sex crime by added _ char "Fus Ro Dah" Skyrim username
This is an error by US (Wisconsin) police misidentifying a man in (Halifax, Nova Scotia) Canada. Why do you want to hear from a UK lawyer?

It sounds like the appeal hasn't actually happened/completed yet anyway, that they're trying to raise public interest/outrage to help the case.

The other one - singular - is a superfluous 'we'. It's perfectly clear.
OJFord··on OpenNode – Bitcoin Payment Processor
Just this week I couldn't purchase from Walmart.ca with a CAD denominated card for delivery to Canada, because my billing address was not in Canada or the US.
OJFord··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
Ok but now do a service that doesn't support that, whether or not it might in the future 'become a pretty common pattern'.
OJFord··on Terrence Tao's ChatGPT Conversation about the Jacobian Conjecture Counterexample
The years are broad though, the nice thing with AI explanations is that they can go deep quickly, and quite precisely down the path you need for your prior experience.
OJFord··on Terrence Tao's ChatGPT Conversation about the Jacobian Conjecture Counterexample
Fancy telling Tao something's 'almost embarrassingly simple' (if only written in the right way)!
OJFord··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
Yes exactly, I'm the queen, and so's my wife.
OJFord··on Dupes took over the world
Seems wild to me they would be still suing to protect that patent in 2026 (or 'recently') – cheap Primark clones seemed to be the standard footwear of (female) teens & pre-teens in the 00s. (And they absolutely called them 'UGGs'.) That ship has long since sailed.
OJFord··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
It's extremely obvious what they meant, even if it/or wasn't a common phone autocorrect typo.
OJFord··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
If it hasn't been tagged with a version yet, how do you know (or what makes you think) it's the same as this 'v1.4'?
OJFord··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
From the article:

> For me this outputs Bun v1.4.0 (macOS arm64). The most recent release of Bun on GitHub is currently v1.3.14 from May 12th, so that v1.4.0 version number in Claude supports them shipping a preview of a not-yet-released Bun version.

Which is still true as I write this comment.

OJFord··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
Emphasis on the FOSS project. The v1.4 mentioned is not (yet?) open source, Claude Code is essentially using a proprietary fork, was GP's point.
OJFord··on Setting up your spare Mac for Claude Code to control, a step-by-step guide
I don't know what exactly GP works on, but 'bank' covers a lot of ground and some things happen on weekends. 'Open Banking' APIs, and some payment rails for example.
OJFord··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
Yeah I had a little script to do something similar (no video, but merging data) just for Strava recording a while back. Had forgotten all about it until this description & 'FIT files'.

Video's a bit more complex no doubt, but like you say all the pieces are there, SMoP.

OJFord··on Vancouver PD website features Quick Escape button that wipes itself from history
I don't know, I'm just saying that's how I know about it, seeing it in setup and disabling it. I've no particular interest or stake in 'arguing it down and reasoning about it'.
OJFord··on TS-2026-009: Insecure argument handling in Tailscale SSH permitted root access
How do you propose to do that when username is a possible argument?
OJFord··on TS-2026-009: Insecure argument handling in Tailscale SSH permitted root access
Not necessarily, it's a clean room implementation. Even if leading dashes was known/documented/tested to implement they might have done it differently. And maybe it was an implementation detail that it was ever allowed, but that's a weird username, headscale implementation happened not to allow it, and nobody ever noticed the discrepancy.
OJFord··on TS-2026-009: Insecure argument handling in Tailscale SSH permitted root access
The SSH vulnerability here only applies if the attacker is already on the network. It violates your Tailscale ACLs, but it's not arbitrary external root ssh access. Arguably that's a more secure starting point than vanilla ssh to publicly accessible machine.
OJFord··on Vancouver PD website features Quick Escape button that wipes itself from history
It asks you in first-time set up if you want it. 'Yes' might be the default selected option, but it's not like opting out requires you knowing about it and going looking for it.
OJFord··on Microsoft deleted my account and OneDrive
I forgot about that (and missed 'or movies'), but the news this week was that they'd stop making physical games, download only.
OJFord··on Microsoft deleted my account and OneDrive
That's a compelling argument (or for how it should be but I bet it isn't) for local play I suppose, but surely the volume's in online multiplayer, where physical media really doesn't save you because you're reliant on server etc. anyway.

(And arguably why not download the game assets or whatever if you're going to necessarily play connected anyway.)

OJFord··on Microsoft deleted my account and OneDrive
Well it's not a 'backup' if it's a single point of failure, something you rely on exclusively, is it!

OJFord··on How to read more books
This is advice from someone who went from 10 books/year to 52 (1 book/week as described).

I think practical tips for someone already a frequent reader are probably different that for someone who reads 'a bit', a few a year at most. I'd be very happy if I got to 10/year consistently. But that would a) be more than 5.2x-ing; b) be a harder initial curve than the 10 to 52 region, I imagine.

OJFord··on UPI: Anatomy of a Payment Transaction
Ooh that's what that is - I thought it looked like a language toggle, but I couldn't work out the languages or in what language the abbreviations were (like HI/EN), and obviously it didn't have that effect. That is a nice idea.
OJFord··on After 7 years in production, Scarf has reluctantly moved away from Haskell
> for some reason Optional[T] became deprecated, just as the ecosystem finally embraced types

Deprecated in favour of `T | None` exactly because of that embrace. It's cleaner, more consistent (you can `T | U` arbitrarily), and helps slim down the `from typing` imports.

OJFord··on An iroh powered smart fan
> Does C also have a compiler that turns C code into assembly

Yes, that's 'a C compiler', like gcc.

> before the real runtime does its work

Sort of, the program is 'the runtime', but this is backwards, languages that have 'a runtime' get the name from it running at runtime to compile/interpret source or byte code. In C what runs at runtime is just your program, whatever you compiled. (Maybe it's an interpreter though!)

OJFord··on Mouse: Precision Editing Tools for AI Coding Agents
What I mean is when Claude Code for example does its 'grep for the thing in file // sed update the thing in the file' routine, I wouldn't be surprised (but haven't looked) if that's abstracted as some kind of 'select // adjust' tool the same way OP proposes.
OJFord··on Mouse: Precision Editing Tools for AI Coding Agents
Sounds sort of interesting, except easily implementable with the bad old 'string replacement' as a skill/tool or something? In fact harnesses probably already have some such abstraction?
