Notanothertoo··on How Discord Stores Billions of Messages (2017)
We use scylla for our IoT stream, bucket per day, with a date index for second resolution data. The current day is a hot spot of, but we throw that in redis. It's running one of the largest re insurance providers IoT deployments.

Yes
Notanothertoo··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
R/watchpeopledie and similar got banned.

All of the porn subreddits that still exist banned domains that serve "unverified" content. The amateur porn scene has been leveled, most of which was legitimate content. Also a lot less user submitted content simply because the hassle of verification and also you have to formally identify yourself at one point. Claims of Reddit hosting illegal content is hugely overblown.

This, these charges are damning once they are made. Plus the countless legal dollars you are going to have to front and hours spent proving innocence and that's assuming the justice system actually works.. Try explain this to your employer while you start missing deadlines due to court dates.. The police also could easily leverage this to warrant hop. As they have been found doing in the past. I think the bike rider who had nothing to do with a crime and got accused because he was the only one in a broad geo location Warren is all the president of of you need that this will be abused.

Exactly. This has all been done for 10 years in various forms.
Notanothertoo··on The quiet battle raging around open banking
I can't find it rn, but I think chase sells individualized data to brokers which can then be linked to online tracking id's. Google has a program for this, it links physical and digital and they use it to verify the effectiveness of their o line ad campaigns.
Notanothertoo··on Man dies of a heart attack after minors swatted him over his rare Twitter handle
Guns are too prolific and necessary. They prevent thousands of crimes every day. In addition to defense, we also use them as pest control for hogs and dear and other things and we are currently not killing enough boars, it's a growing problem, but I digress.

Due to enforcement issues any outright ban will just prevent law abiding citizens from defending themselves. There are certain cities that have failed in the last 10 years resulting in police response times over an hour. In the case of Detroit violence was consistently rising during that time until several perps were shot committing a crime and it was highly televised and then violence receded.

Guns empower women to defend themselves against people who could otherwise physically dominate them, as well as other minority groups who may face violence in their neighborhood. There are lots of countries with armed civilians that don't have school shootings.

There has also yet to be a reasonable technical classification that can identify a so called "assault" rifle from other rifle platforms.

Government tyranny is also real and legitimate threat to the population. Especially today with an ever invasive fed surveillance program, secret courts, and countries that are bypassing the bill of rights by offloading the violations to its allies. Oh and they are still discussing the legality of which and will seem to be in a perpetual legal battle over it. Many people argue you can't fight tanks/drones ect.. with guns but history Hong Kong is an excellent example and they aren't even armed, imagine if they were. They are willing to die for the cause and they would have the opportunity to escalate it to violence. The regime would have likely had to back down.

School shootings are about mental health and bullying and the relationships they have with adults around them. It's easy to make a bomb. If people want to inflict mass violence they will, we need to fix the root issues.

Notanothertoo··on We don’t use Kubernetes
This reads as they don't have any experience with it and decided to roll their own. I had no experience with kube 3 months ago, we had rancher 1 cluster with 30-50 services, and I just migrated it, just me. Ended up on eks with CNI (pod networking) - Using the lb controller with ip target types and a targetgroupbinding for ingress and its great. Each pod gets its own secondary ip on the ec2 instance automatically. I'm deploying rancher as a management ui.

I also now have a k3s cluster at home. The learning curve was insane, and I hated it all for about 8 weeks but then it all just clicked and it's working great. The arrogance to roll your own without assessing the standard fully speaks volumes. Candidates figured that out and saw the red flag.. Writing your own image bootstrapper... What about all the other features, plus the community and things h things like helm charts.

Notanothertoo··on Cities try to phase out gas stoves but cooks are pushing back
Looks like the popular ones are pushing 3k at home depot with it going up to 4k, 600$ gets you a really nice gas stove..
Notanothertoo··on Cities try to phase out gas stoves but cooks are pushing back
... Thats disingenuous, its not I don't know how to use an electric stove its that its simply better, they don't even compare. The response time on a gas stove is unbeatable and makes a big difference in how you cook. Also try using a wok on an electric stove.

My point was why don't we fix the very obvious and low hanging fruit like cargo ships that run on sludge, fix that first before you tell me and millions of others that "we don't know how to use electric stoves"

Notanothertoo··on Cities try to phase out gas stoves but cooks are pushing back
OK you take more risk of dying every time you get in car..
Notanothertoo··on Cities try to phase out gas stoves but cooks are pushing back
So every natural disaster hence forth is global warming cool.

Go after the fucking businesses for their waste. There are a dozen boats that produce more carbon than all the gas stoves in the world.

Notanothertoo··on Cities try to phase out gas stoves but cooks are pushing back
Also cost, I can buy a gas stove for 400$, how much for that induction?
Notanothertoo··on Cities try to phase out gas stoves but cooks are pushing back
No, it's not comparable and are you kidding me? This is utter nonsense. There are 12 ships that produce more co2 than all the gas fed home sin the world.. Quite getting off in telling other how to be.
Notanothertoo··on Ask HN: Recruiters want people who do side projects, yet contracts forbid them?
In the interview process I wait until they want me, and one of the things I do before final offer is ask for employee handbooks and any and all expected legal obligations for me to sign. Often under the premise that I would like to review the inclusiveness of ip work ie are they claiming outside work. Then I tell them to correct it or won't sign it. On principle we as an industry should be rejecting these things and setting healthier boundaries.

I wish we would unionize and take over the world, seriously, for our own benefit and be the source of change. There is a shortage and if we unionized optionally a cross the industry we could force real change, not for some woke cause but for the economics of it. We could fix a lot of this bs.

Notanothertoo··on The vital art of talking to strangers
I do believe the modern (us) conservative evangelical "back to basics" movement started in the 30s/40s as a response to rampant alcoholism from the great depression. Church of christ and similar denominations. They take a (claimed) "hyper" literal approach over a few key issues, like alcohol, sex, drugs, taxes, tithing, homosexuality.. Recent history was the 90s abstinence movement.. And in the last 7 or so years these have been the churches taking the brunt of the exodus and have been largely deflated, with churches across the nation dying due to lack of new young people.

I would wager good money that most modern conservative US Christian families have a male alcoholic relative not too far removed.

The alcoholics and Christians go together.

Notanothertoo··on Of 55 students in my class at Columbia’s Film program, 4 made a career out of it
I've worked with one, hired right before I joined, I became lead 6 months later. He would ask for help and then when I gave him things to do or lookup he would just fail, and would subtly try and get others to do it for him. Total mooch. Multiple meetings and attempts about it. Couldn't fire him. Had him on a plan immediately after being lead. It was so bad at one point I had his desk moved to be next to mine and I had to tell him he can talk to me but stop interrupting other seniors. Eventually that became work in whatever you want so long as you don't need anyone. He sat there for 3 months and did nothing before he was finally payed off. Parent company transfered him to his own department essentially and then "restructured" it.

He had a mech engineer background, two years out of engineering school went to code camp.

Ceo was an idiot and payed him 90k starting which was a lot more than one of the other seniors who was an self taught English grad. He worked his ass of an was performing as a senior. Ceo stiffed him on the raise, he didn't know any better until he found out code campers salary and was gone in two weeks.

My director left shortly after and so did I. They haven't kept a lead for more than 6 months since, that was 3 years ago... Sorry I digress.

Good thing there is a whole market of ranging degrees of education quality and price distributed a cross the US...

Also there are lots and lots of programs state and private to fund low income higher Ed. It is not a dichotomy.

This. Its their job to calculate risk, and bet on it. Let them and let em set the interest rate accordingly. This would also solve the ever inflating tuition costs and cause schools to be competitive. In general it would curb academic tomfoolery.

Weird what happens when the government assumes liability. Everyone wants to blame the banks for '08, and they have some fault but it was all enabled by federal encouragement and liability. At least in the private sector the companies live and die by their decisions and the banks were held accountable /s.

Notanothertoo··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
Except these companies spend more on marketing than rnd.
Notanothertoo··on USA Today is getting a paywall. Who’s the audience for it?
Yep, also I think a lot of news is a "conversation" as an event unfolds and the one way direction of most media is outdated. With the internet we can now have bidirectional conversation about/with the news.

For example much of the political reporting and conversation is being moved to longer form chat online.

Notanothertoo··on USA Today is getting a paywall. Who’s the audience for it?
It'll be blocked by the pay wall plug in by Friday.
Notanothertoo··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
Yes and that's a good thing. Politics is mostly a game of pretend and therefore bullshit, as uhh.. engineers we like to be more practical. We simply see the bullshit they are selling regardless of political affiliation. If they wanted to actually solve problems the approach and results would be totally different.
Notanothertoo··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
Big tech wouldn't have the silos or platform lock downs (ie power/user capture) they have today without the ip legal framework. People would be able to legally circumvent their bs and offer services around gaps in their platforms and would encourage more competition and result in a less monopolistic practice.

I think all monopolies are violence enforced or they are competitive otherwise somebody would step in and undercut their costs and the government has a monopoly on violence so...

Notanothertoo··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
No you shouldn't.. The idea that your idea is so novel it should be legally enforced as "yours" is pretty egotistical imo. How do you credit the millions of ideas you are basing yours off of. It's also information, it's not "stolen" in the sense that multiple people can't use it at the same time.

Benefit of rnd is being first to market. You will capture much of the market while everyone else catches up and you are in a better position to innovate.

Also without these legal barriers if somebody can improve on it and make it better that's better for the community and consumer at large and allows for constant iteration.

Also there is a lot of bad behavior and things encouraged by the patent system. You have judges giving patents over technical nuances they can't possibly learn in a courtroom. You have companies like Intel spending millions on legal teams to enforce things rather then engineering innovation, which is great until you are no longer the dominant player and global players don't play by those rules.

Notanothertoo··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
As someone who started a business only to get a bullshit suit that I was unable to afford by one of the largest re insurance providers in the world (#1/2), the idea that the ip/patent legal framework as it is today helps the little guy is a slap in the face.

They preemptively sued me in a state I've never worked in or entered for that matter because the favorable corporate law there, and that is why they have their hq there. They would file a bullshit motion, get everyone in front of the judge. Somebody would point it out, they would retract it, and immediately file a new one and request everyone have time to review it. All the while bleeding me dry at 500$ an hour for litigation on top of travel expenses plus the regular legal fees of multiple lawyers across two states.

The whole thing was bullshit, lots of red flags but I lacked the capital to assert my agency legally..

The ip/patent framework as it is today helps nobody but big co and promotes regulatory capture. It prevents the kind of reverse engineering you see in China and why we don't have things like removable battery cell phone mods and other "hacks" here. It's why the right to repair is an issue at all, if they didn't have this legal framework they wouldn't be able to enforce any of it legally. Somebody would come along and offer a service to do it at a fraction of the cost. Why do I have to keep buying the same media over and over again on different formats. It's amazing to me seeing the most authoritarian regime in modern history leverage the free market better than the "capitalists". Sorry for the rant but this shit is imo the reason for most of the corporate bullshit today. It's what empowers the lawyers.

Notanothertoo··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
Ever greening patents is standard practice today. This is why insulin is so expensive. Another good example is Disney's bs. They have kept thinks out of public domain for over a hundred years.. The 20 years thing is for the little guy, if he can ever afford the 50k patent and legal fees in the first place.
