NorwegianDude··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
Well, if they have to allow other engines then those browsers should be able to implement PWA features and web push on iOS instead. Then user can hide the trash that is safari on iOS and never use it again. Win win.
NorwegianDude··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
Some games work really well as a PWA. Acquiring users is much cheaper too compared to an app.
NorwegianDude··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
Apple are extensively tracking users, that's how they can know.
NorwegianDude··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
What world are you living in? Web apps are literally 100+ times faster to start using, much easier to share, much easier to market, and you can offer much cheaper services as apple doesn't take a large cut of payments.

That's just a few of many advantages.

NorwegianDude··on PWAs wont replace native iOS apps
I think developers need to clearly put blame on Apple for PWA not working. In apps you're not allowed to mention apple's shady behaviour when it comes to fees, but on the web you can.

Since 2016 I've had the option for users to enable push notifications, with a big red disclaimer if the user is using iOS that it does not work on an iPhone. Still, I got so so many requests from user saying they had tried with Chrome(or whatever other browser) instead, and it's still not working, not understanding that all browsers on iOS is limited in the same way because of apple.

If there are any more problems with web push on iOS I'll clearly tell the user that Apple doesn't allow the user to use it, and that they will have to ask apple to enable it, and give them contact information. If the user bought the phone expecting web push to work then they can probably return it and buy an Android phone instead if the seller can't fix web push.

NorwegianDude··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
So to summarize: You can create your own app store, but Apple controls it, and it will cost you. You can create your own app store, but only you can publish to it. You can use your own payment method, but Apple must be allowed to collect data and a large fee from every payment. You can distribute apps that Apple approved in your app store, but you have to give Apple the data and pay per install.

Not even Google is close to that amount of data collection and greed...

Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, Netflix and Microsoft should just demand 30 % of the device purchase price before allowing access to any services. If Apple is allowed to limit access at their own terms then others should be able to do so too.

I don't think any company with a huge market share should be able to do so, so I hope Apple will have to open up at least to the degree Android has done.

NorwegianDude··on Norwegian: Bokmål vs. Nynorsk
People don't speak nynorsk or bokmål. It's s written language. Some dialects are closer to one written form than the other.
NorwegianDude··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
Google has grown their marketshare a lot during the last few years.

They sell a lot of them, very very far from zero...

NorwegianDude··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
> laid off employees who worked on ... the Pixel phone.

That sounds weird to me. Pixel phones has grown very fast in the last years and I don't se how it can be seen as anything but a great success.

NorwegianDude··on Heat pumps, more than you wanted to know (2023)
Good question. Seems unlikely that the prices are correct. If it is then someone has a huge incentive to import from other places. The most popular air-air heat pump in Norway with a SCOP above 5 is less than 2500 USD including installation and tax.

But, it's also a fact that the US is far behind when it comes to heat pumps and energy efficient homes. The general knowledge in the US about heat pumps is terrible.

NorwegianDude··on 7 watts idle – building a low powered server/NAS on Intel 12th/13th gen
I've been running a E3-1230v3 for over 10 years now. With 32GN ECC, 3 SSDs and 4 HDD and separate port for IPMI I'm averaging 35 W from the wall with a light load. Just ordered a Ryzen 7900 yesterday, and I guess the power consumption will be slightly higher for that one.
NorwegianDude··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
The only decent solution I can think of is passkeys. Cross device synced identites that the user can choose a service for.

Just having a random ID isn't good enough, unless you want the user to remember this ID.

NorwegianDude··on Outlook/Hotmail is no longer blocking my mail server
What's the best way to quickly get MS to trust a server/domain?

Does MS ignore IP reputation in cases where the domain has a good reputation?

How would you go about getting a new domain and an IP address from a public cloud provider working consistently?

I've had issues with outlook when it comes to new domains and IPs, but after some time it works. I do however usually have more email than a personal server so what's the best way - if such a thing exists - for a personal server that has much lower volume of mail to be trusted?

NorwegianDude··on Whisper: Nvidia RTX 4090 vs. M1 Pro with MLX
The power draw is not impressive here. Sure, it's low, but if you account for performance/W then the GPU is much more efficient.
NorwegianDude··on Porsche summons old-school cool with the 2024 911 Sport Classic
It's a driver's car, and a collectable. In what way is it unremarkable?

NorwegianDude··on Canadian government reaches deal with Google on Online News Act
I think search engines should be opt-in, not opt-out. Just linking to something is fine, but search engines also takes content and uses it to earn money. One example is the cards on Google where they extract content and shows it alongside ads.

Nothing else I can think of works like this. Generally if you take the work of others without being allowed and use it to make money you'll end up in trouble.

Now, for most people the trade-off is worth it, but it should not be the default. It should be a quick opt-in using robots.txt.

NorwegianDude··on Ask HN: Why do people use password managers?
No serious password manager with syncing stores your passwords in a way that gives them or anyone else with access access to your passwords. They are encrypted, so they need your master password.

People have multiple devices, so syncing is needed for usability.

Some password managers are basically local, but with end to end encrypted syncing. If you have to move passwords around, why not use a solution that already does it in a secure way?

NorwegianDude··on The Curse of Docker

NorwegianDude··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Why is people so interested in this? Why exactly was he fired? I did not get why when I read the news, so I find it strange that people care if they don't even know what it's about. Do we know for sure what this was/is about?
NorwegianDude··on Tesla Model 3 fault rate is the highest of any car: report
Not really news. Tesla's are cheap cars with terrible quality that basically "everyone" owns, and similar cheap Chinese cars like Polestar also has a lot of problems.

Getting work done has always taken a long time too, and that has only changed in the last few months.

NorwegianDude··on Tesla faces strong oposition from unions in Sweden
What are you talking about? Only possible alternative is Chinese? Sure, Teslas are cheap and more similar to cheap Chinese brands like Polestar, but there is a ton of options.

Jaguars, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, VW and a bunch of others are popular and european.

NorwegianDude··on Using GPT-4 Vision with Vimium to browse the web
It does solve, or at least try to solve, captchas for me. It gets like half the characters correct, it's very bad at it.
NorwegianDude··on A Video Game That Pays: Lessons Learned from Working Remotely
Games can be designed to be winnable, but many games are not.

Working hard is not the same as working smart. That's kinda what I was hinting at. Many people are able to make much better decisions in games compared to real life.

NorwegianDude··on A Video Game That Pays: Lessons Learned from Working Remotely
A video game is like a very simplified world. Life is a really complicated and usually slow paced game.

One thing I find really interesting is how much better some are at games compared to real life. I guess that's because games are fast paced, so you are rewarded much sooner. Just planning and sticking to that plan can get people very far in reality too, but it's so much harder because it takes so long.
