Normille··on Telegram has stolen my channel's username to sell it on auction

  >I wanted to object (as a happy Telegram user) that I want to preserve message history for all my devices...
Telegram is already useless on that score. Since the other party/ies in a conversation can delete their messages from everyone else's devices as well as from their own. I stopped taking any of Telegram's privacy and security claims seriously when i discovered that gem.

I still use Telegram to keep in touch with a load of family and friends but I have no faith in whatsoever any of their self-righteous privacy & security claims and comparisons with other messaging services. For a very long time now, evey update has focussed on adding moronic cutesy junk like animated emojis and stickers. So it's quite clear that their focus has moved away from being a private & secure messaging service and towards appealing to the TikTok generation.

That's fine. It's their project. They can do what they want with it and [as I said] I still find it useful. I just wish they wouldn't keep on trying to convince people it's a serious secure commmunication tool.

Kerrr-chinggg!

Dontcha love it when a plan comes together!

Normille··on TSMC says efforts to rebuild US semiconductor industry are doomed to fail

  >Backed by the might of its own economy, surely the US can rebuild dominance in any technological area it happens to choose given its strategic position and aims?
And if you can't build dominance by fair means, just sanction the Chinese companies that are beating you. And, needless to say, all your little lickspittle acolytes in Europe and Australia will follow suit.
Normille··on Feds say Ukrainian man running malware service amassed 50M unique credentials
Can't be true. All Ukrainians are woderful.
Normille··on Russia conducts first nuclear weapons drill since its invasion of Ukraine

  >President Vladimir Putin made unfounded claims that Kyiv was seeking to develop a “dirty bomb”...
How does the FT know they claims are 'unfounded'? Are they privvy to secret top level discussions on the Ukrainian side? Bit of a lapse in security, if they are.

If ever there was an example of "Look what clever javascript tricks I can do!" trumping usability, that article was it. Who the feck thought it was a good idea to?...

periodically have the text you were reading fade out and be overlaid with images. Amd have the captions for those images be off the bottom of the screen [on my MacBook Air 11"] but, when you scroll down to read them, the image fases away and dumps you back into the text again. Also often the end of a paragraph of text is off the bottom of the screen, but when you scroll it into view, the text fades out and an image fades in instead.

But well done, whoever it was. You've proven you know JavaScript. Now go off and study accessibility for a while!

Ahem....

Fixed now, anyway. See above ^^
Normille··on Photopea: A free Photoshop alternative making millions
Yuu're both right. For some reason I had:

about:config > javascript.options.wasm > FALSE

Could be that's the default. I certainly don't remember disabling WebAssembly at any time.

Photopea working fine in FF now.

Normille··on Photopea: A free Photoshop alternative making millions
Agreed. As a longtime Photoshop user, I was gobsmacked the first time I used Photopea at just how good it was. Gobsmacked even more when I found out it was all written in JS and completely running in the browser with no server backend.

EDIT: apparently my enthusiasm is outdated. I just tried to load the site in Firefox [latest version] and got the following error:

"Your browser is too old (no WebAssembly). Please, update it."

What a shame!

Normille··on Russian forces “preparing to work under radioactive contamination” – Moscow
Again you're [deliberately?] misunderstanding me. I'm not arguing about whether or not Putin will use nuclear weapons, or whether or not he would launch a first strike. My argument is entirely about the fact that the media is reporting that he "threatened to use nuclear weapons" as a direct quote, when he didn't utter those actual words.

Whether he will or not, isn't the issue here.

I said elsewhere in this thread how surprised I was that even HN's supposedly above average intelligence readership was failing to spot these manipulations. Your reply kind of proves the point.

Somehow my pointing out that "The media has quoted Putin as saying X when he didn't actually say those words" has mutated into "Normille doesn't believe Putin will do X"

It's this distinction really so difficult for people to grasp?

Normille··on Russian forces “preparing to work under radioactive contamination” – Moscow

  >Putin did threaten to use nuclear weapon when he said “we will certainly use all the means at our disposal, this is not a bluff”.

  >I haven’t seen any news that specifically mentioned “first strike”. Care to give an example?
You're literally proving my point there.

In the first quote above you're telling me Putin did threaten to use nuclear weapons, even though he didn't say those actual words

In the second quote you're asking me to prove my 'inference' by showing you where those actual words were used.

So you want it both ways? We can infer what Putin meant and report that as direct quote. But when reporting statements from 'our side' we must stick to the actual words used?

If you can't see the inconsistency there, there's no point even debating this further.

Normille··on Russian forces “preparing to work under radioactive contamination” – Moscow

  >it has always been Russia's stated position that they won't hesitate to use nuclear weapons as first strike weapon...
Nope. Again this is the direct opposite of the truth. Russia has a stated "No First Strike" policy. As does the USA. As does China. As does NATO. As do, I beleive, India, Pakistan and every other nuclear armed nation. It's one of the reasons [alongside MAD] that we've, so far, managed to avoid a nuclear conflict.

Other commenters have hinted at Russia staging a false flag 'dirty bomb' incident, to justify making a nuclear response. That's an alarming thought. But I think it's equally alarming to see how we're being manipulated by the media into accepting some kind of limited nuclear conflict as inevitable and being pre-programmed to accept the "He hit me first!" jutification --especially as [see my other posts on what Putin actually did and didn't say] it seems like the Russian people are being similarly prepared for similar justification.

Normille··on Russian forces “preparing to work under radioactive contamination” – Moscow
Again, you're making the same [deliberate?] error everyone else is making. He's threatening he'll RETALIATE accordingly if the West/NATO uses nuclear weapons against Russia. This is EXACTLY the same stated "No first Strike" policy as every single NATO member has.

So why are we not seeing reports that "USA threatens to use nuclear weapons against China"? Because I bet if you, if asked, the US would make EXACTLY the same 'threats'.

Normille··on Russian forces “preparing to work under radioactive contamination” – Moscow
You're missing my point. Various news sources are reporting that Putin "threatened to use nuclear weapons" with the patently obvious suggestion that he was threatening a first strike and explicitly said that he would use nuclear weapons in that. Now I'm not disputing the inference that can be drawn from what he said. That's obvious. What I'm trying to point out is that this 'inference' we're all drawing is now being reported repeatedly as an actual statement he made. Which is completely untrue.

It's like if I said "adam has threatened to kick me in the bollocks. Well, if he does so, he should remember I have steel toe-capped boots too!" and the press all reported that as "Normille threatens to kick adam in the bollocks".

It ignores both the fact that I actually said I'd only retaliate if adam kicked me in the bollocks first AND the fact that I didn't actually say I would kick adam in the bollocks, but just reminded him that he wasn't the only one wearing big boots.

It may sound pedantic. But reporting what you inferred from what someone said as a direct quote attributed to that person is not honest journalism.

Normille··on Russian forces “preparing to work under radioactive contamination” – Moscow
Yes. I've seen that before. Here's the transcript of what he said:

Perhaps you can show me where he made "threats ... to defend Russia's "territorial integrity" with nuclear weapons"? Because the only time he mmentions nuclear weapons by name, he's referring to threars from NATO to use them on Russia and saying he'll respond in kind if this happens. Exactly the same response any other country would make; "If you nuke us, we'll nuke you back". Do you think the US or any other NATO country would say any different?

How on earth does this get mutated into 'Putin threatened to use nuclear weapons'? It's the same kind of doublethink which mutates 'We're not going to buy your gas any more' into 'Russia turned off the taps'.

You don't have to be an apologist for what Russia has done to Ukraine [and I'm not!] to be alarmed at how public opinion is being manipulated here. It's just depressing that it's even working on the HN audience which I always assumed to be a bit less gullible and a bit more questioning. God only knows what crap people who get their news from the tabloid press are being spoon-fed here!

Normille··on Most children who think they’re transgender are going through a ‘phase’ – NHS
4: Pre-pubescence and pubescence really fucks with your horomones and your mind and leaves you searching for a reason why you feel 'different' to [how you assume] everyone else around you feels.

Not saying truly transgender people don't exist but the huge explosion in numbers since it became socially acceptable means that either there's "something in the water" which is increasing the number of transgender people around, or a lot of vulnerable young people approaching and going through puberty and feeling confused and different are convincing themselves they're transgender [because it's all over the news], where back in my day they'd be fretting that they might be gay.

I think the danger is in the fact that, for someone at that vulnerable age, convincing yourself you're transgender can lead to you undergoing life-changing, physical alteration to your body, where convincing yourself you must be gay might have lead to a few embarrassing memories, in later life.

Shouldn't it be "of color" given it's one of those puke making American phrases?

Normille··on Vladimir Putin says the world’s energy infrastructure is at risk

  >Are you saying Putin hasn’t used threats to cut gas supplies to Europe to attempt to deter the West from helping Ukraine?
If that was addressed to me: I'm pointing out [for the nth time] that, after Russia invaded Ukraine, the EU and UK announced their intentions to completely stop buying Russian gas & oil. This has now been spun into the narrative that [as I quoted above, from the Economist article] "It [Russia] has used cuts in gas supplies, or the threat of them, to try to blackmail Europe since the early days of its invasion of Ukraine..."

This is the exact opposite of the truth. Russia continued to supply oil & gas and pledged to keep on doing so, right from day 1 of the invasion of Ukraine. It was the EU & UK which decided to weaponise energy supplies and they are now suffering the consequences. Hence the 'Ministry of Truth' version of events that we're seeing now, repeated over and over again til it becomes fact.

Amusing also that pointing this out gets your post downvoted and flagged to oblivion. Kind of reinforces my point, no?

Normille··on Ask HN: Is DDG Becoming Unusable?
I'm pretty sure DDG used to use Yandex... which in turn used Bing. Now DDG uses Bing directly.

The world of search engines is nearly as frustrating as the world of web browsers, or dare I say Linux distros; on the srface, a lot of choice. But, underneath, much of it is just the same old thing, with a different front end.

Normille··on Ask HN: Is DDG Becoming Unusable?
DDG has always been crap in my experience. It's one of those companies who seems to be a media darling, in spite of having a mediocre product. About the only thing I miss from my brief period of using it as my default search engine was the bangs. Now those were a good feature!

Normille··on How to use a watch as a compass

  >I've been to-and-fro across much of North America for much of my life. I have never encountered a situation where it was especially challenging to orient to the cardinal directions...
This is one thing I always find quite odd on American TV / Films.

People [eg. police pursuing someone] will inevtiably say something like "He's turned north onto 21st St." or "He's heading east on 12th street". I always wonder how they know the compass direction. I don't think many people in Britain would express directions like this, using compass points, or even know which direction was which.

Do US streets have the cardinal directions on the roadsigns, or are you all issued with built-in compasses at birth?
