NolF··on What If You Used iOS 9's Low Power Mode All the Time?
Under the developer options section, you can disable animations.
NolF··on Why Cant Commercial Airplanes Go Faster? (2012)
Whenever I've played a flying simulator, if I've put the plane upside down, to maintain altitude I need to push the joystick forward. In an upright plane it would cause a nose dive, on an upside down plane, it creates lift. Due to it's not optimal aerodynamics, it also requires more thrust to maintain. Basically you are changing the shape of the wing to compensate for the non-conventional position.

There goes Australia and their 4 digit zip codes...

NolF··on House Votes to End N.S.A.’s Bulk Phone Data Collection
He also goes through the hassle of explaining his votes. Which is nice to see and understand his thought process.
NolF··on Warning: Wi-Fi Blocking Is Prohibited
Surely that would affect mobile phone reception. I can't imagine anyone being happy about that.

NolF··on HTML5 Video and the End of Plugins
No kidding! I tried to make a landing page with a <video></video>... seems like you need 3 versions of the same video for cross browser format compatibility...
NolF··on The Masterful Marketing of the Heimlich Maneuver
Just as FYI / technical distinction, you can be sued for rendering first aid, the likelihood of that suit being successful is unlikely due to the protections under the good Samaritan laws. Lawyers can still be expensive. As a professional you should always have professional indemnity insurance on top of whatever the employer provides.
NolF··on On the Science of Interstellar
1. It was a largely uniformly flat planet. It was only 2ft deep due to the tidal wave borrowing water ahead of it. See videos of Tsunamis doing the same thing

4. I thought this one was explained by the baseball scene at the end as the ball falls upwards when it crosses some sort of mid point.

5. You are thinking of time linearly moving forward, cause and effect. I think the library scene and their explanations of the 5th dimension aimed to explain that time is another dimension that can be altered. "Whatever can happen will happen".

NolF··on Adobe Spyware Reveals Again the Price of DRM: Your Privacy and Security
I learned to de-DRM my Amazon books due to the concerns of their licencing. Now I can put them on my phone and listen to the books with TTS. The kindle App for Android doesn't have the feature...
NolF··on Netflix refuses CRTC demand to hand over subscriber data
No, that is incorrect, you do not need laws to protect "freedom of speech". In fact it is very easy to go from a law that "protects" freedom of speech to one which limits it. E.g. You can say whatever you want as long as...

The net neutrality issue is largely due to government granted monopolies and subsidies during the internet revolution era of the dotcom days. Now you have to content with monoliths and a very high barrier to entry by competition.

NolF··on Google Is Target of European Backlash on U.S. Tech Dominance
Every time I've installed Chrome clean, it has asked me what my default search engine should be o_O
NolF··on What would a UK flag look like without Scotland?
The Horizontal and interpretative vertical Spanish flag are wrong. The Spanish Constitution stipulates the yellow band to be twice as tall as the reds [0]. That is 25% Red, 50% yellow, 25% red.

NolF··on An analysis of Lionel Messi
I think an even better example would be Nadal v Djokovic on the 2012 Australian Open final. According to Nadal the best game he ever played and consolidated Djokovic as one of the greats. And you could see how one lifted the other up to do better and be better. Such an amazing game.

NolF··on Google ruling 'astonishing', says Wikipedia founder Wales
The irony here is that in order to be able to get people forgotten, companies will need to do a much better job at knowing what information belongs to whom (build an identity) so it can be forgotten. The problem also becomes, people who share names etc... and by extension should we be destroying news papers from decades ago? I believe many are archived in libraries and be used for the same kind of research, albeit less convenient, of information that has not been forgotten...
NolF··on Man's high-tech paradise lost: bionic eye removed
I think copyright would be the least of the worries. Think about the implications it would have in courts for common traffic offenses, non-violent crimes (including drug use), and maintaining corporate and state secrets. Then also consider other the privacy considerations day to day kind of stuff to even child pornography (minors with this implant).

Ideally the BMI would be as protected as the brain in a 5th amendment sense, but it's a very quick and tempting slippery slope...

NolF··on Microsoft Open Sources C# Compiler
Excel for Mac doesn't have the "Evaluate Formula" function and the Name Manager is crippled... (to name a few issues) Makes it really hard to do complex and robust development.
NolF··on Aereo loses copyright fight, gets banned in 6 states
There was a company that did remote DVD streaming, exactly in the fashion and with the intent you describe. They lost on court [1] with a $1.8m payout.

NolF··on Facebook Fraud [video]
I whitelist some websites from Adblock including Google. The ads need to add value to my browsing experience. Most sites just bombard me with irrelevant ads that distract me from what I'm doing but don't give me any value in return. I often click on ads in Google when I'm searching for a particular product to suit my needs.
NolF··on AMD reveals its first ARM processor: 8-core Opteron A1100
> although I find the clock speed (2GHz) kinda underwhelming

Remember that the clock speed is not necesarely everything. AMD may be able to get more work done with those 2Ghz than a Snapdragon 800 might using similar or less energy.

NolF··on MTurk + Google News API = press
Basically, by spending so much time doing work for peanuts to make ends meet or as a primary source of income, they become reliant on that income and will not find opportunities elsewhere. The argument is that mTurk perpetuates and thrives on cheap labour.

The solution is obvious, make the decision for them and deprive them of that source of income or legislate minimum wage rates... This in my opinion would be very shortsighted and harmful.

NolF··on Masscan: scan the entire Internet in under 6 minutes, 10 million packets/second
I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to have another server with the big button that would then send the command to initiate the scanning system. I wuldn't be surprised if you could even add a progress bar of sorts with big text reading "downloading the internet". I have good reason to believe it looks like this in its finished wireless form https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-T-ec3sb6Xgc/ThXz2ApbsjI/A...
NolF··on Google insider exposes ‘immoral’ tax scam
The moral argument is a weak one at best. Companies have a responsibility to their shareholders to maximise profit.

I there is a $500 deductions for drycleaning without receipts, people are going to claim all $500. It's the same concept at a large organisation.

NolF··on Executable Archaeology: The Case Of The Stupid Thing Eating All My RAM
The anti-trust rulings in the 90s prevents Microsoft from restricting OEMs on the crapware they install on computers.
NolF··on IBM improves delivery of nanomeds that kill bacteria where antibiotics fail
It's possible that alcohol kills 100% of the exposed bacteria, but we can't be sure due to measurement limitations, so that's why the bottles will say 99.99%.
NolF··on Facebook’s embedded option
DDG has its own index, you get offered bing/google when there is too few results from DDG. Even when you click bing/google, it is anonymized, so the results are not skewed by the info the search engines have on you.
NolF··on New particle observed at LHC
The common cold is not a single virus but many many many different strands which are continually mutating. Ever gotten the flu after the vaccine? That's because the vaccine doesn't target all flu strands, merely what the developers identify to be the main strands of the flu virus for that season.

These particles are very difficult to find, extraordinary amounts of electricity are required to create them for the brief period of time they exist independently. Incredibly sophisticated equipment is used to detect the signs that such particles emit, and mind boggling computational power is used to sort through the petabytes of data gathered through thousands of collisions to be able to identify a particle with sufficient confidence.

Due to the unchanging nature of particles and their components, and the robustness of experiment methodology, and theoretical models to assist what one may look at, finding a particle becomes practicable.

NolF··on Canadians to start HIV vaccine clinical trials
Both vaccine and non-vaccine groups receive appropriate counselling (this part can be double blind even) regarding HIV, risk behaviors, and as a trial vaccine it might no be 100% effective etc etc... You assess the impact of behavior changes via surveys and interviews to see if there has been a significant increase in risk behavior and the control for it.

It would be unethical to give a placebo to someone for this kind of disease.

NolF··on Canadians to start HIV vaccine clinical trials
There is no placebo group, it would be highly unethical to do so. Half the sample population gets the treatment half of it doesn't with the option to get the treatment once trial finishes. Changes in behavior due to treatment are accounted via survey pre-treatment and at measuring intervals.
