NoNotTheDuo··on Show HN: Auto-identity-remove – Automated data broker opt-out runner for macOS
Mail isn't documented as a requirement, but the first item in the Requirements section is "macOS (uses launchd for scheduling and Messages for iMessage)".
NoNotTheDuo··on Young sons of U.S. marshal ride horseback from Oklahoma to New York (2018)
The Dollop did an excellent episode on this misadventure, recorded live in Tulsa: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/299-the-dollop-with-dave-anth...
NoNotTheDuo··on The 500k-ton typo: Why data center copper math doesn't add up
Amazingly ironic that in an article about a typo, there is a typo.

> "Tat sounds like the ultimate catalyst for the commodities market and copper has been hitting records."

"Tat" should be "That", imo.

NoNotTheDuo··on Mapping Amazing: Bee Maps
I’m struggling to figure out the upside, as a normal end-user. I don’t manage a fleet of vehicles and I’m not developing an app based on the data.

Why should I pay this company $19/month to put their hardware in my truck? It’s not clear to me that there’s navigation (I.e. a replacement for Waze/Maps) available to me via an app. I guess it records video and can be used like a dash cam, but there are much cheaper and offline alternatives. Earn their proprietary crypto coin? No thanks.

NoNotTheDuo··on Discord says 70k users may have had their government IDs leaked in breach
I think it's a combination of "everyone knows they're doing this stuff" and "the ones who could do something about it (i.e. charge/prosecute, change laws, etc.) are implicated".

Much like the problem in the US Congress: they are not subject to insider trading laws, so they can make huge sums of money acting on non-public information. The only people that can change that are ... members of the US Congress.

NoNotTheDuo··on Onshape – Product Development Platform
I don't think that's quite accurate. If you're using the free license, then everything you create is a public document. Allowing anyone in the world access to that document. Per the EULA[0]:

> 7.2.2 For any Public Document owned by a Free Plan User created on or after August 7, 2018, or any Public Document created prior to that date without a LICENSE tab, Customer grants a worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive license to any End User or third party accessing the Public Document to use the intellectual property contained in Customer’s Public Document without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Document, and to permit persons to whom the Document is made available to do the same.

[0]: https://www.onshape.com/en/legal/terms-of-use

Perhaps more importantly, the Free License doesn't allow for any commercial use. If you are designing something for commercial use, then you can, should, and are obligated to, upgrade to a paid license.

NoNotTheDuo··on Show HN: Compass CNC – Open-source handheld CNC router

It’s on the compass home page. Admittedly the Play button does blend into the background image of the router a bit.

NoNotTheDuo··on Today Google bricked my Chromebook by force-installing a hidden extension
> but it’s not some evil data slurp.

Not yet anyway. We’ve just seen Amazon change how all Echo’s/Alexa’s operate. It has been local-only for years and years, but now they want the audio data, so they’ve changed the Terms of Service. There’s no reason to believe Google won’t do the same thing sometime in the future.

NoNotTheDuo··on ‘Bluey’s World’: How a Cute Aussie Puppy Became a Juggernaut
I'm particularly fond of 'Sleepytime', but 'Rain' is probably the episode that I've thought of more often than any other. Because of that 7 minute cartoon episode, I have found myself _actively_ changing my behavior/decisions with my kiddo - letting them do something that will be a bit more work for me later on (extra laundry or whatever), but something that sparks their curiosity or gives them a new experience or similar.

NoNotTheDuo··on The era of open voice assistants
I think another part is that there is a failure mechanism on their boards that was recently identified: https://community.openconversational.ai/t/sj-201-sj201-failu...

The short version, from the post, is that there are 4 capacitors that are only rated for 6.3v, but the power supply is 12v. Eventually one of these capacitors will fail, causing the board to stop working entirely.

It would be hard for a company to stay in business when they are fighting a patent troll lawsuit and having to handle returns on every device they sold through kickstarter.

NoNotTheDuo··on Sora is here
Their example videos: https://openai.com/sora/, of the doors opening, are hilarious.

1. The first set of doors doesn't have any doorknobs or handles. https://ibb.co/PwqfzBq

2. The second set of doors has handles, and some very large/random hinges on the left door. https://ibb.co/JkDtc6r

3. The third set doesn't have any handles, but I can forgive that, because we're in a spaceship now. The problem is that the inside of the doors seem to have windows, but the outside of the doors, doesn't have any windows. https://ibb.co/nwpXmtq & https://ibb.co/wr6v2g1

4. The best/most hilarious part for me. The doors have handles, but they are on the hinge side of the door. No idea how this would work. https://ibb.co/gWXDcfr

Alternative data points:

> Under Project 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would be eliminated, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) would be privatized

> The Department of Education would be eliminated and oversight of education and federal funding for education will be handed over to the states

> The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would be eliminated and moved to the Department of Interior or the Department of Transportation if combined with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)

> The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s many regional labs and entire offices of enforcement and compliance and scientific integrity and risk information would be eliminated.

> The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is to “privatize as much as possible” and close many hospitals and clinics.

> The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) would be taken apart and send much of its work to states and other agencies

> The Department of Justice (DOJ) would lose its independence and be under control of the President

> The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) would be drastically reduced and split into two entities: one gathering scientific data and one making public health recommendations and policies.

NoNotTheDuo··on A Michigan farmworker is diagnosed with bird flu in case tied to dairy cows
Likely because it’s very deadly, spreads rapidly, and now that the virus has transferred from birds -> cows -> humans, it could start to mutate into something that spreads human to human.

> Human infections with HPAI A(H5N1) virus have been reported in 23 countries since 1997, resulting in severe pneumonia and death in about 50% of cases.

NoNotTheDuo··on Beekeeper furious over destruction of $2M honey crop
It's probably a case where it's illegal to vaccinate the hive, because it's not explicitly legal to vaccinate the hive.

For example, in the US, it's legal to use brand name "API-Bioxal", which is Oxalic Acid, to treat for varroa mites. However, one can head to their local hardware store and buy generic "Wood Bleach", which is also Oxalic Acid. It is not legal to use the wood bleach to treat your hive, even though it's the same chemical compound.

NoNotTheDuo··on Ente: Open-Source, E2E Encrypted, Google Photos Alternative
The article and the blog post is about open-sourcing their server software though... which means you will be able to run the same software at home for free, instead of paying them to host it for you.
NoNotTheDuo··on Setback in the "American Chestnut Project"
Seems like the new bit of information is at the end of the article:

> Addendum, Jan. 16th, 2024 > Reports in the Washington Post (long text) and at the “Genetic Literacy Project” (short text) report on a huge setback in the “American Chestnut Project”.

> Apparently seeds had been mixed up or mislabelled before planting. Instead of Darling 58, a mixture of Darling 54 and Darling 58 was planted! The young Darling 54 trees are less robust, have slower growth, die more often and also seem to have a lower tolerance to the fungus.

Or better yet - $150 gift certificate tailored to the employee's interests. For example, if Tom likes to golf, find out where he likes to play and get a gift card there. And give him an afternoon (or better yet, whole day) off to play golf - and don't count that as PTO. The small personalization means a lot, at least in my experience.
NoNotTheDuo··on Ancient City Found in the Amazon
The article says exactly why:

> Prof Rostain says he was warned against this research at the start of his career because scientists believed no ancient groups had lived in the Amazon.

> "But I'm very stubborn, so I did it anyway. Now I must admit I am quite happy to have made such a big discovery," he says.

NoNotTheDuo··on Ask HN: Small-batch builds of smaller phyiscal objects
I’ve not personally used them, but the company was founded and is ran by the mentors of a high school robotics team. I volunteer with the program, so I’m familiar with the team.

I have made several quotes for different personal projects, but those projects have all been tabled for the moment.

Here’s the announcement post on the main social forum for the robotics program: https://www.chiefdelphi.com/t/introducing-fabworks-fast-affo...

NoNotTheDuo··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates, Memories of Ice, House of Chains, Midnight Tides, The Bonehunters, Reaper's Gale, Toll the Hounds, Dust of Dreams, and The Crippled God - aka Malazan Book of the Fallen - all by Steven Erikson.

Talk about a renewed interest in reading. After getting through Gardens of the Moon, I realized that I didn't really know what was going on or why these characters were doing what they were doing. I found a readalong podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ten-very-big-books-a-m...), which really helped me put into context the storylines throughout the series.

It's the most epic fantasy series out there. The stories are based on GURPS games that Erikson and his gaming partner Ian Cameron Esslemont ran in the 1980s on archeological digs.

And there are an additional 16 novels, written both by Erikson and Esslemont, which continue to flesh out the universe.

I became completely enamored with the books. I couldn't put them down. It took me from about February through October to finish all 10. There's so much content, and they really shine on a readthrough.

NoNotTheDuo··on SQL reserved words – An empirical list
I'm surprised sqlfluff hasn't been mentioned yet. Perhaps not a comprehensive list, but it's worked for everything I've thrown at it. There's an ANSI keyword list [0], and then dialect-specific lists for everything from DB2 [1] to Snowflake [2].
