NickHaflinger··on Moon landing tapes got erased, NASA admits (2009)
Has any of the conspiracy theorists ever considered pointing a laser at the moon to detect the retroreflectors that were left their by Apollo 11.

NickHaflinger··on Sony responds to claim PS4 used for terrorist communications
Such terrorist attacks are being cynically used as a pretext by the state security apparatus to shutdown private communication between its own citizens. If Chine spies on its own people then that's a violation of their human rights. If the freedom loving west does it, than that's to protect you from the terrorists.

"Despite what the papers say, there’s no evidence ISIS used PS4 to plan Paris attacks"

NickHaflinger··on When I stopped hearing the voices in my head
Sound different from the life experience of a woman I met recently who also had to withdraw from uni through overwork. That was over fifteen years ago. Unfortunately she was sectioned by her family (who all then skipped off to America). She's been prescribed a cocktail of psychotropic pharmaceuticals ever since. She has developed type two diabetes, disruption of thyroid activity, kidney damage, fluid retention and dangerously overweight. A once intelligent and good looking woman reduced to a shambling wreak like something out of the living dead and can't even remember what you told her yesterday. Not much of a cure after fifteen years of 'treatment'. The mental health professionals must know the damage the drugs are doing. But I guess they are making a good living out of her. -------

I find that whole article manipulative and disingenuous in the extreme. A full page free advertisement for the psycho-pharma industry.

NickHaflinger··on The Quest to Unlock an Ancient Library
"In trying to read the scrolls, scholars and curators have invariably damaged or destroyed them. The Herculaneum papyri survived only because all the moisture was seared out of them—uncharred papyrus scrolls in non-desert climates have long since rotted away. In each scroll, the tightly wrapped layers of the fibrous pith of the papyrus plant are welded together, like a burrito left in the back seat of a car for two thousand years. But, because the sheets are so dry, when they are unfurled they risk crumbling into dust."

..

"Brent Seales, a software engineer .. gave a talk about the possibility of “virtually unwrapping” the scrolls, using a combination of molecular-level X-ray technology, spectral-imaging techniques, and software designed by him and his students at the university."

..

"In 2010, at a digital-restoration conference in Helsinki, Seales met Uwe Bergmann, a physicist at Stanford. Seales was familiar with Bergmann’s work on the Archimedes Palimpsest."

..

"When Bergmann read about the palimpsest, in an article in GEO that his mother had given him, he immediately thought of employing a synchrotron"

..

'Once he obtained access to the palimpsest, Bergmann used X-ray fluorescence imaging, or XRF, in the synchrotron to get pictures of the iron-based molecules in the ink. Unlike MSI, XRF is sensitive to individual elements. Different elements emit characteristic wavelengths of light when the X rays hit them; by zeroing in on iron, Bergmann was able to see the letters. “What had been invisible for centuries was made, right before our eyes, visible,” he said, in an interview published by the Department of Energy. “Line by line, Archimedes’ original writings began to come to life, literally glowing on our screens. It was the most amazing thing.”'

It is the newyorker, why use a single sentence when a whole paragraph - with endless digressions - will do :)

I. we demand that the University of Missouri system president, Tim Wolfe, writes a handwritten apology for the Concerned Students 1–9 – 5–0 demonstrators and holds a press conference in the Mizzou Student Center reading the letter. In the letter and at the press conference, Tim Wolfe must acknowledge his white male privilege, recognize that systems of oppression exist, and provide a verbal commitment to fulfilling Concerned Student 1–9 – 5–0 demands.

NickHaflinger··on “TPP Is the Most Brazen Corporate Power Grab in American History”
TPP is designed to formalize the reality that corporations tell governments what to do, not the other way round. Why else would governments sign away control of their own economy to secret tribunals appointed by the self same corporations.
NickHaflinger··on How to Develop Mental Toughness
0. Go to religious school and there learn to lie, cheat, steal and take pleasure in other peoples misfortune.

6. Take note of who is causing you problems at work and ensure they experience problems in the future.*

* They obviously have too much free time on their hands .. help them fill it.

NickHaflinger··on TPP banning requirements to transfer or access to source code of software
"These are rules for States. It has no bearing whatsoever on the GPL."

TPP is designed to give commercial entities equivalent rights to nation states. That's what the 'Investor-State Dispute Settlement' provisions refer to. Under these provisions a commercial entity could 'steal' Open Source code, without the requirement to release the source code. In effect rendering licenses such as the GPL unenforceable. At the very least it may cause a dilution and hinder the growth of the Open Source sector. Now I wonder whose interests that that would advance and who helped to write such provisions.

NickHaflinger··on Grsecurity Developer Spender's Feelings on the State of Linux Security
I would think that everyone here agrees that 'computer' security is in a state of turmoil. Is it possible to design a computing system that fails-safe in the event of a bug in a component, instead of opening the entire system up to exploits. Fails Safe as in the process does nothing or restricts the targeted surface area of the malware.
NickHaflinger··on Actually, Marty Didn’t Go Back to the Future: Graphing the Train Scene of BTTF3
There are more plausible depictions of travelling through time out there than using a DeLorean travelling at 88 mph. Take Primer for instance:

NickHaflinger··on Actually, Marty Didn’t Go Back to the Future: Graphing the Train Scene of BTTF3
Enough all ready with this 88 mph requirement before the flux capacitor is activated. All they have to do is point the DeLorean east and the rotation of the earth will do the rest. Not to mention the earths orbital speed round the sun, the suns trajectory round the milky way and the milky ways trajectory in relation to the inertial reference frame, that's about 1.3 million miles per hour in the direction of Virgo.

Besides why didn't old-doc just post a letter to future-doc and get him to bury some plutonium in the desert in the past. Then old doc goes and collects the plutonium and goes-back-to-the-future and collects the letter and goes back to 1785 and burys some plutonium in the desert, then goes-back-to-the future .. my brain hurts ...

NickHaflinger··on Continuing the Debate on Slavery and Capitalism
What's remarkable is that slavery was the norm since the beginning of human culture. It's even mentioned in the Holy Bible and the most Nobel Quran. What's even more remarkable is that it was only prohibited in the west as recently as 1833.

'It should come as no surprise that the Internet is riddled with holes' ..

It's a surprise to me and most people on here, it's the computers connected at either end that are riddled with holes.

'For all the holes discovered in Microsoft’s code, the security industry still largely sees Microsoft .. as a security success story' ..

Who wrote this self serving revisionist waffle?

“There is a lot to be learned from that,” said Jim Zemlin, the executive director of the Linux Foundation.

“The problem is that Bill Gates can’t write a memo to the whole world. What we need is a new culture of norms.”

NickHaflinger··on On therapy and intrusive thoughts
OK, sorry for the factious response. My solution for when you can't switch off is to take up keep fit. Running on grass (not concrete), swimming, weights etc. You'll be so busy, you won't have time for intrusive thoughts. And of course you will have to do without your usual chemical cosh. So not only will you feel better, be more efficient at work, but think of all the money you would have saved.
