Nicholas_C··on Want to found a startup? Work at one first
Where do you live? This ideal is alive and well in most of the U.S. outside of the big cities.
Nicholas_C··on Chasing utopian energy: How I wasted 20 years of my life
Fervo (https://www.fervoenergy.com) is another deep bore geothermal startup.
Nicholas_C··on CityEngine: Build a Digital Twin of Your City
My SimCity nostalgia wishes someone would use this to make agent based models of real cities with every citizen mapped out.

Anything like that ever been done?

Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What are some mentally healthy apps to have?
I always tell folks that Duo is a good place to start learning but you need to augment/replace it with other methods/tools after learning basic pronunciation and grammar.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: How worried are you about the upcoming recession?
> This is the big one.

Or maybe it isn’t. No one knows.

Nicholas_C··on It is physically impossible to exceed the weight limit for a Small Flat Rate Box
Smaller scale but it’s not uncommon for investment banks to fly junior analysts to deliver pitch books for a meeting.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Software with biggest potential for positive impact in 5 years?
Many companies are very interested in measuring, managing, and reporting their fossil fuel/carbon usage. A few software companies that provide this off the top of my head:

https://iconicair.io/ https://www.sinaitechnologies.com/ https://www.persefoni.com/

Nicholas_C··on Show HN: I built a sonar into my surfboard
I’ve often thought about something like this. I think pro surfers could use this to “cheat” (really depends on the rules) in competitions, but would be really nice to have for the casual surfer.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Best way to organize 100-200 emails/day in Outlook?
I work as an investment banking associate (M&A mostly) and get similar email volume. In outlook I have a folder for each deal and within each folder I have sub folders for the different workstreams (e.g. materials drafting, VDR, model, outreach, IOIs, etc.). I clean out my inbox at least once per day depending on how slammed I am. I leave action items or follow ups in my inbox and folder anything else. I arrange my emails by conversation (go to the “View” tab in outlook and there should be an option there) as this aggregates by subject line and makes it easy to follow and file. You can go through emails quickly by selecting an email and using CTRL+SHIFT+V to bring up the folder pop up and typing in the name of the folder you’d like to send it to.

This obviously takes work to implement but will keep you on top of things and your clients happy.

Nicholas_C··on Pandora papers: biggest leak of offshore data exposes financial secrets of rich
Shareholders can take out a loan for spending money that uses the shares as collateral.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What are your non-tech hobbies?
Surfing, Hiking, Running, Reading (fiction and non-fiction), Fishing (largemouth bass mostly), Guitar, and too many others
Nicholas_C··on Culdesac Tempe: The first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the US
I recently saw a YouTube video deriding Houston’s car-first city design. The video didn’t once bring up that it’s extremely hot and even standing and waiting for a bus at 8am is sweat-inducing for 4 months out of the year and riding a bike to work is even worse 7-8 months out of the year (speaking from experience for both these things). Interestingly enough, downtown Houston has a massive tunnel system with restaurants, barber shops, dentists, doctors, etc. to keep everyone out of the heat in the summer.
Nicholas_C··on Why do we use R rather than Excel?
I’m a hobbyist programmer who has worked in various finance jobs and is now working in investment banking. I would love to use programming in finance but I have to say it’s come in handy very little.
Nicholas_C··on A forgotten Anglo-Saxon colony on the north-eastern Black Sea coast (2015)
> It doesn't make sense that people will migrate from England to Crimea just out of the blue.

The article states that they didn’t want to be ruled by the Normans so they left and wandered around the Mediterranean then went to Constantinople to help with a siege. Then they were told they could settle an area that wasn’t currently under the Byzantine Empire’s control, which was in Crimea.

Nicholas_C··on A forgotten Anglo-Saxon colony on the north-eastern Black Sea coast (2015)
This saga would make for some very interesting historical fiction.
Nicholas_C··on GitHub Copilot
As a hobbyist this is going to save me so much time. Little things like googling how to read CSVs in python for the 20th time add up and I think this should help solve that.
Nicholas_C··on America’s Forgotten Tea Rooms
I’ve been to ~10 Buc-ees (although I prefer mom and pop places like Hruska’s/Czech Stop) and I don’t think I’ve ever noticed seating.
Nicholas_C··on Flask 2.0.0 has been merged into master
> Flask is a great library which gets out of your way - I find it a joy to use compared to Django.

Agreed. I found Flask after being really annoyed with learning Django. Flask + Heroku is an awesome combo for the hobbyist like myself.

Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Should one diversify their stock portfolio
Buy the S&P 500 and save yourself a lot of time trying to pick industries.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Is Google Search Dying?
I wonder how many companies have realized this new search pattern and are already astroturfing on Reddit. Everyone is assuming the content/reviews from Reddit are authentic but a good amount might not be.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Would you pay for Hacker News?
I think there are plenty of startups right now that will be gamechanging in hindsight. No code/low code startups, for instance, could be some of them.
Nicholas_C··on Job board to work on problems like climate change and food insecurity
Cool product, I think limiting flaring is one of the more important ESG mandates in the oilfield right now.

Andium looks somewhat similar to Rebellion Photonics (recently sold to Honeywell), although the use case is different. Not sure if you’re familiar with their product.

Nicholas_C··on Time flies in Google Earth’s biggest update in years
Interesting to think: What demos are happening now that elicit a similar response?
Nicholas_C··on Show HN: A Twitter crawler for app ideas
This is great. Many years ago (5 or 6?) I started pulling down any tweet that had the phrase “there should be an app...” and saving to a database daily with the idea of making something similar to this. The script is still running and I have about 40,000 tweets saved. I think I’ll pick it back up, thanks for the inspiration!
Nicholas_C··on Myopia treatment 'smart glasses' from Japan to be sold in Asia
I wore ortho-k lenses from about 10 years old into my twenties. I switched to daily disposables as I think they are more convenient but when I was younger and playing more sports the ortho-k lenses were great. There is also some evidence that they can prevent eyesight from deteriorating.
Nicholas_C··on SaaS We Happily Pay For
Does the same on Chrome on an iPhone 8. Interesting.
Nicholas_C··on I reverse engineered McDonalds’ internal API
Morning shifts at McDonald’s were tough, especially on Sundays with the big post-church rush.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What's your favorite “forgotten” technology / software?
I wanted to get into photography last year and bought an old Canon AE-1 off eBay as a cheap entry point. I had so much fun I ended up spending about as much on lenses and film/film development than I would have if I had bought an entry-level DSLR.

I’ve since bought an entry-level DSLR but the AE-1 keeps drawing me back. There is something really neat about the whole process and anticipation of seeing the developed film. Not to mention the old cameras just look and feel cool and the photos have a vintage-like texture that is really unique.

Nicholas_C··on Powell’s says it won’t sell books on Amazon anymore
To me this is preferable to putting it in a large cardboard box with bubble wrap like they seem to do for even tiny but durable products like finger nail clippers. It’s much less of a waste and I don’t mind if a book is slightly creased.
Nicholas_C··on 8 Tips for Attending Virtual Conferences
You lose out on networking though, which could arguably be the most valuable part of conferences.
