NewsaHackO··on Sonnet 5.5
You can tell how vague the grammar complaint was it probably wasnt a big of a gaffe that they think it was. Also, slight tangent, but the part where he said that it admitted where there was an error but was not able to say why it made the error is one of the issues with model sycophancy; it want to validate the users feelings of being wronged, but also does not want to say something factually incorrect. So it produces this fail state of saying sorry for nothing, but it cannot backtrack.
NewsaHackO··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
>Recently was using claude code/opus 5 to diagnose an intermittent wi-fi connection problem and one of the first things it did was to bring the adapter down.

Do you mean restarting it? IDK, that would have been my first step too.

NewsaHackO··on Z80 REPL (2018)
Yea, it doesn't have that... uninspired design to it, looks like the design of someone who actually created it themselves.
NewsaHackO··on Heretic removes restrictions from language models
I think a major difference is that while torrents are illegal, the main people enforcing it are copyright holders. I think the discussion would change if the government would label people who build/use/distribute "illegal" models as terrorists.
NewsaHackO··on Microsoft agentically ports Copilot runtime to Rust for $120K
This has to be 1) early LLM vibe coding or 2) “hand” vibe codingwhere the user asked the LLM to code sections and stitches them together manually, and the programmer is a novice. The second part I speak from experience; got to ~2k before realizing this is out of the script range and started to break it up. Regardless, it would be almost impossible to get an SOTA LLM agent to ever do this.
NewsaHackO··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
This is still in line with his point; presumably, people who live in the building and pay rent will want construction cost to be as low as possible as it will help reduce the rent needed for a builder to break even. An ornate stonework is great for someone looking at it, but if it requires rent to be raised by 100 dollar a month for a tenant, most would rather it not be there.
NewsaHackO··on Navier-Stokes Announcement
No the definition of == is the regular definition; it's just a deductive reasoning statement. Since the first part of the statement is never true, it doesn't matter what the second part of it says. Of course, like he said, that makes the statement have no value.
NewsaHackO··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
I guess part of the problem is that being against being against anything for economic interests doesn't really rally anyone to your cause; everyone has to make a living doing something productive for society, and professions have come and gone all the time due to technological advances. In fact, when one thinks about it, the people that are losing their professions now were major contributors to others losing their form of income. Often people talk about how they can use technological/programming/IT skills to make some secretary or administrative assistant's job obsolete. So most people just don't feel a lot of sympathy when people complain that AI are going to take those people's jobs.
NewsaHackO··on Chrome again exempts Google from user site data settings
What sane person use non systemd Linux? I kid, of course and thank you for your service in keeping the linux ecosystem honest in terms of reducing systemd’s hegemony and everything but this cannot be a problem you are not used to running into.
NewsaHackO··on Waymo racked up 8,300 SF parking tickets and nearly $1M in fines
Off topic but I got the weirdest ads on this site. Has to be off putting to people attempting to read it on their phone in public. Had to close it before getting past the first paragraph.
NewsaHackO··on Grep beats LSP? Why coding agents ignore your fancier tools
When you use “we” hopefully you are referring to someone on your team. Just be careful, the first step down the rabbit hole of AI psychosis is humanization of LLM.
NewsaHackO··on Google Antigravity TOS: 3rd party usage can get Google account suspended
No one has actually had their account banned for this, Google just disables their Antigravity access due to breaking TOS. People just repeat the line that “Google bans accounts” because it’s a bigger headline draw.
NewsaHackO··on Creating backup storage sucks
I think there is a system to do this with git annex that will just keep the hash link in a repo but have the file in a offline drive, so you can easily keep track of files that are in cold storage. It may need you to have your own encryption system though.
NewsaHackO··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
Honestly, unless what you are doing is frankly illegal, it usually is possible for you to get around most safeguards for coding things if you also know how to write code. Most problems have a separable completely innocuous core that Fable would gladly do. Then you can implement the problematic parts yourself. Particularly things like copyright issues, web scraping etc.
NewsaHackO··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I feel as though you are overlooking simple statistics/confidence intervals. It absolutely possible for two different works to be not have a distinguishable difference in quality.
NewsaHackO··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I am pretty sure they did A/B testing to show it didn't. I could gave sworn they even released a quiz were the user has to try and guess which answer is watermarked or not and it was impossible to tell.
NewsaHackO··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
Do you have the prompt for these? I ask because I have recently asked Fable's help with hardening a docker container (custom dev container CC sandbox) and it didn't get triggered on it at all.
NewsaHackO··on Vermell – Minimal, dependency-free C++ web framework using epoll
If I were to open source a project these days, I will definitely have my progress be a clean, huge initial single commit. Too many busybodies trying to piece together code forensics to say something is vibe coded or not.
NewsaHackO··on The safest job from AI may be writing
Also, a huge area that AI seems to thrive in is cybersecurity, which almost by definition involves errors that the original programmer failed to think of or catch.
NewsaHackO··on Commercially Available Bike Generators Are Not Sustainable (2011)
I thought he was posting about some retro product until I saw the USB ports in the energy delivery. Weird that he edited his photos to look like that, and used retro components otherwise.
NewsaHackO··on Show HN: Sesame - a local-first, open-source password manager
>I like that this could be self hosted.

For now. I note that all of the repos that are attached to the project have a license except sesame-server, which I do not think is an accident.

NewsaHackO··on Show HN: Sesame - a local-first, open-source password manager
subscription style paid program, of course. Starting at 1 dollar a month now, until they get market penetration, then they will jack up prices (for increased opex, ostensibly). The classic SaaS playbook.
NewsaHackO··on Building an (almost) fully self-hosted, sandboxed, agentic software factory
But also, it is a post that is self promoting their personal twitter page; there should be a high threshold of doing this, and regurgitating some trite analogy should fall below the bar.
NewsaHackO··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
The issue is stuff like job security and layoffs; it’s easy to not care about what position you have until someone is looking to fire 20% of non staff engineers and suddenly you are afraid of being on the chopping block.
NewsaHackO··on Building an (almost) fully self-hosted, sandboxed, agentic software factory
People have been making analogies like this since 2023, hardly worth a link to a random twitter thread.
NewsaHackO··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows
Also, they seem to care about wasting electricity but doesn’t bat an eye of discarding a perfectly fine printer.
NewsaHackO··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
Yea, they are going to have to monitor how often similar writing pieces are being submitted, or limit the access to the checker somehow.
NewsaHackO··on Claude: System Prompts
That seems more like a conspiracy theory. I think the group of people who 1) view this website and 2) click on a thread about certain topics are a heavily conditioned (and therefore more homogenized) group; if you say something that is controversial/low quality, it is likely going to get downvoted by multiple people in that group.
NewsaHackO··on How Claude's text watermarking works
Do open "source" models have have this watermarking enabled? How do you know?
NewsaHackO··on Anthropic: Introducing The Conceptual Reasoning Index
It is so bizarre, honestly. It's almost like they are a public utility company. People are trying as hard as possible to hate them, but always stop short of simply canceling the service because they can't live without them. Seriously, I saw someone say that they were so disgusted with Anthropic that they were cutting down from having two Max subscriptions to just one.
