NeoBasilisk··on Apple Hides Taiwan Flag in Hong Kong
Disgusting and cowardly, but if it makes a buck (or billions), am I right?
NeoBasilisk··on Nearly half of white Harvard students are athletes/children of alumni/donors
Private institutions are bound by laws that we (society) create.
NeoBasilisk··on Federal Judge Upholds Harvard's Race-Conscious Admissions Process
>You shouldn't judge people by the groups they happen to belong to.

And yet, in this country we did just that for hundreds of years. You don't just wave your hand and erase that legacy. We are in a transitional period that will hopefully help ease us into a society where these measures will truly have no place. We are not there yet.

NeoBasilisk··on Harvard Does Not Discriminate Against Asian-Americans in Admissions, Judge Rules
It's not a punishment to not get into Harvard. Most people don't get into Harvard.
NeoBasilisk··on 1966 children about the future [video]
I could be wrong, but my understanding is that people were generally pretty optimistic in the early 1900s (before WW1 obviously). Everyday applications for electricity were rapidly changing daily life for people.
NeoBasilisk··on Birds Are Vanishing from North America
It's a question of scale. There aren't 7 billion beavers. If there were only 300 million humans, we wouldn't be having these issues.
NeoBasilisk··on In a small trial, drugs seemed to rejuvenate the body’s ‘epigenetic clock’
Oh, I already have IBS, so that's a hard pass for me.
NeoBasilisk··on 15 states are trying to make the electoral college obselete
That is correct.
NeoBasilisk··on 15 states are trying to make the electoral college obselete
The Senate alone has the power to confirm every judge in the entire judicial branch. The House has absolutely no say in any of that.
NeoBasilisk··on Every productivity thought I've ever had, as concisely as possible
>Tabs have a tendency to blow up. However, there’s a natural upper limit for how much the can blow up, since at some point they overflow and you no longer have access to the rightmost tabs.

ahaha hahahahaha

The only thing I really remember was that MindMaze game.

Or if you insist on keeping 9-5, then why not do it 4 days per week? After all, why do we only work 5 days/week? Could it be that maximizing the output of corporations is not the sole priority of a country?

NeoBasilisk··on People Simply Empty Out (1986)
how little imagination you have
NeoBasilisk··on Why is modern web development so complicated?
Wow, I had this exact thought the other day. I loaded the page, and just sat there and watched this animation on the screen. "What is it doing" was all I could think. All I need it to do is load the subject line of the first however many emails in my inbox. It can't be that complicated.
NeoBasilisk··on Why is modern web development so complicated?
Most people are making CRUD apps that aren't all that special.
NeoBasilisk··on YouTube faces creator backlash
To some degree, I do appreciate the fact that it was shut down just to illustrate the fact that all of these sites and services are not "real" and could disappear at any time. I think it is good that people at least keep this fact in the back of their minds, so a concrete example from time to time can be helpful.
NeoBasilisk··on YouTube faces creator backlash
Youtube's copyright claims system is absolutely abysmal. I didn't know that TikTok is owned by a Chinese company, so I assume that they are much more resistant to copyright trolls?
NeoBasilisk··on Europe's record heat wave moves toward Greenland
The trouble is that life can get so much worse without everyone dying.
NeoBasilisk··on Europe's record heat wave moves toward Greenland
People at the beginning of the 20th century were incredibly optimistic, only to be hit with loss of life on an unprecedented level in world wars. Things can improve in some ways and get worse in others. The climate of the planet that our grandchildren inherit will be worse than the one that we enjoy.
NeoBasilisk··on The poor can’t afford to follow public health advice
Why are you talking about sausage in a conversation about eating healthy foods?
NeoBasilisk··on 210k-year-old skull in Greece is earliest sign of modern humans in Europe, Asia
On a darker note, one could almost see it as a form of mercy that none of the other species survived into the era of civilizations. Given our willingness to enslave other humans, I can only imagine what would have been done with "lesser" humans.
NeoBasilisk··on Life in a City Without Water: Anxious, Exhausting and Sweaty
Yes, and it will make the Syrian refugee crisis look like a joke in comparison. There will be extreme backlash from the right and even center depending on the volume of migrants. It will not be pretty.
NeoBasilisk··on The state of switching to Windows from Mac in 2019
I was scared to ask what this was even referring to
NeoBasilisk··on Slack Wants to Replace Email. Is That What We Want?
no lmao no
NeoBasilisk··on Why are we so pessimistic?
I can only share my experiences from playing open world MMOs with perma-death PVP. You can have 10 positive interactions with other players, but it only takes one bad interaction for your character to end up dead and gone. Immediately identifying those potentially bad situations as they unfold is of critical importance.
NeoBasilisk··on Physicists Debate Hawking’s Idea That the Universe Had No Beginning
To some degree, it is the willingness to "know your place" in human history. No one in ancient Greece could have discovered cosmic background radiation or observed that all galaxies exhibit redshift, which would have provided evidence for the existence of a Big Bang.

Similarly, we have limitations to what we can observe and measure. We strive to continuously make improvements, but we also need to accept that not all questions will be answered within our lifetimes, and unless civilization collapses, schoolchildren will have a more complete understanding of the nature of the universe in 300 years than we do.

NeoBasilisk··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
I've been using Firefox since 2005. When Chrome came out, I tried it, said "ok," and kept using Firefox.
NeoBasilisk··on Google to restrict modern ad blocking Chrome extensions to enterprise users

NeoBasilisk··on With His Job Gone, an Autoworker Wonders, ‘What Am I as a Man?’
It is depressing to hear from people in the comments that they think a viable solution is to just abandon entire regions of the country. Yes, let's just pack everyone into NY, SF, LA, and Chicago.
NeoBasilisk··on YTMND is down for temporary maintenance
Very sad. It's impossible to explain to someone what YTMND was like in 2004 if they didn't experience it themselves.
