Nbox9··on What the world will be like in a hundred years (1922)
I’m unsure, unless the author is of especially high renown.

If there was two dozen “What life will be like in 100 years” articles published per year in decently sized newspapers we will have 240 such articles to choose from this decade. Surely we would only see the most accurate of these predictions, and that is survival bias.

Of course, maybe there was not a large variance between predictions, or everyone is accurate to a similar level of degree. In that case some other method of selecting which old predictions we read will be at play, perhaps based on which publications were better archived or random chance.

Nbox9··on What the world will be like in a hundred years (1922)
I’m really unsure about this. In 1822 canning food was new technology. 1822 didn’t have electrical generators but 1922 had radios, and the TV was clearly on the horizon. 1922 has the Model-T and airplanes.
Nbox9··on Drug ring hid $1B worth of coke on a single ship
I imagine if you wanted to buy $1B of cocaine it might be best to start earlier in the production cycle.
Nbox9··on Bitcoin consumed 134 TWh in total during 2021
This is really more of a political question than a technical one. To me it’s hard to separate modern cryptocurrency from the historical context of it’s launch in 2009.
Nbox9··on Bitcoin consumed 134 TWh in total during 2021
If you’re trying to ‘do the math’ one thing you might consider is that any excess heat from the rig can be recycled in the house.
Nbox9··on Bitcoin consumed 134 TWh in total during 2021
> The whole thing literally works on competing on consuming more energy.

I know this is pedantic, but the competition is about computational power. Energy is a significant input. Let’s not ignore the benefit that the more computational power that is spent in the competition the more secure the blockchain is from 51% attacks. Maybe 134 TWh is too high of a price for such a limited use technology such as bitcoin. Maybe we could do the same or more with the less energy intensive PoS technology that ETH 2.0 will bring to the mainstream. Blockchain is the single largest threat to banking, and that doesn’t come without a price.

Nbox9··on Nuclear fallout is showing up in U.S. honey, decades after bomb tests
> Since the cessation of atmospheric nuclear testing, background radiation has decreased to very near natural levels,[4] making special low-background steel no longer necessary for most radiation-sensitive applications, as brand-new steel now has a low enough radioactive signature that it can generally be used in such applications

Apparently there’s less money in those scuttled ships now than there was 50 years ago.

Nbox9··on Poll: Did you know that HN allows you to make polls?
It’s not just that online polls do not provide valid data, it’s that they provide misleading data.
Nbox9··on Germany shuts down half of its remaining nuclear plants
> I'd rather deal with the waste then be mining forever or burning oil.

How does Nuclear Power stop mining? I see how it would reduce the need for coal, but it won’t change our appetite for metals, rocks, or gemstones.

Nbox9··on Ask HN: Nerds of HN, did you overcome loneliness?
I do not feel convinced that there is a strong relationship between people’s interests and their level of social awkwardness or their position on the ASD. I understand that your attitude is that people interested in computers are more likely to be socially awkward. I wanted to challenge that position, and bring my own antidotal point of view into the discussion.

The protagonists of Silicon Valley were displayed in incredibly high positive light. They received fame, fortune, drugs and sex. They were portrayed as a modern personification of American Independence, living life on their own terms and bashing heads against authority. They showed very strong social connections. Even scenes where Richard experiences social anxiety are shown in a highly relatable way.

Nbox9··on Ask HN: Nerds of HN, did you overcome loneliness?
I’m the US.

Your comment seems to imply that non-asd folks entering tech are just in it for the money. Between the general popularity with Video Games, the changing Hollywood image of hackers (Neo, FSociety, Pied Pipper), the hero worship of Steve Jobs/Elon Musk, and the general societal acceptance of all things STEM we have a lot of people, especially young men, entering computer programming out of genuine interest.

Determining private medical data or motivations for a population is hard to do in any ethical empirical way.

Nbox9··on Is Bluetooth holding back Apple's AirPods? We asked the man who made them
If you go to any server farm, somewhere that network speed and stability actually matters, and you’ll see wired network connections. That doesn’t mean Wi-Fi, LTE, and 5G isn’t good enough for the 99% of devices.

There’s a lot of devices (AirPod pro, WH-1000XM4, Quiet Comfort 45, below the $300 price point that offer * Bluetooth * Active Noise Cancellation * Good microphones for calls * Pretty good sound quality

These devices offer fantastic convenience, sound pretty good, and are generally affordable. Some of them even have a headphone jack. They compare to a Wi-Fi device to me, the net connection will never be as good as a wired, but the convince factor is “good enough”

Nbox9··on Crowded dorms,no flush toilets and food crawling with worms at iPhone plant
Can we stop comparing low wage workers with slavery? Slavery is much worse, at least how it was practiced in North America. It was more than low wages and and economically exploitative relationship, it was a different set of laws & rights for an ethnic group.

Slaves had severe legal restrictions on movement, education, religion, marriage, and participating in commerce. Slaves also had very limited legal protections against bodily harm caused by their masters. This is an inherently different type of relationship than someone working in a Foxconn factory.

I had to break this to you, but you can definitely find an affordable USB Floppy drive in Tokyo.
Nbox9··on Experimental depression treatment is nearly 80% effective in controlled study
> environmental factors

Actually being depressed can worsen environmental factors. Depression can make it hard (or impossible) to maintain work, relationships, hygiene, sleep, diet, and exercise. Losing the things can make the depression worse.

Nbox9··on DoorDash is requiring engineers to deliver food
When designing a dogfooding process try not to have 50 engineers do the same thing 12 or 120 times a year. For example, having engineers in kitchens fulfilling orders, having engineers perform store management tasks, and having engineers run a full day of deliveries will probably provide more insights even if done less frequently. I’m pro dogfooding, but put some thought into making sure the entire app is being dogfooded. Finally, when running a dogfooding program in your company be sure to communicate the importance of focusing on your customers and and cultivating customer empathy.
Nbox9··on “Play-to-Earn” and Bullshit Jobs
> If the financial instrument that underlies the project were to stop going up in value XX% per month, would you still be interested in the project?

I use this yard stick when reviewing all of my tech investments. Providing real value with interesting technological innovations is why ETH outperformed every other alt-coin, just like why Amazon and Google survived the dotcom bust. It seems fundamentally unfair to ask this question specifically of “crypto/NFT/web-3” when it applies equally to all assets and projects.

Nbox9··on Apple said to be preparing for iPhones without SIM card slot in 2022
Actually, the SIM card use to be a “personality chip” in the 1990s. It stored your phone number and your contacts. There’s a scene in The Wire where a drug dealer confuses the police by changing the sim card of his phone when talking about criminal activity, which evades electronic surveillance (changing the phone’s ID on the network) and physical surveillance (sims are very small and concealable). I was specifically calling out how the use of a cell has grown in the last 30 years specifically as it related to identity.

I’ve spent a lot of time engineering login pages and thinking about questions of user identity.

Nbox9··on Apple said to be preparing for iPhones without SIM card slot in 2022
> Having a physical object the embodies your phone's identity

A SIM is not a embodiment of an iPhone’s identity. Maybe it was in the 90s, but today it’s so much more. The SIM is more like your iPhone’s credentials for accessing one network. You can change SIMs, change your access token for one network, but you are making no bigger impact on your phone’s “identity” than if you were to change Wi-Fi networks.

List of Identity related things that change when you change your SIM

  * Network Access Layer data associated with the cellular networks

  * Phone Number
List of Identity relates things that do not change when changing your SIM

  * All data stored on the phone (messages, photos, apps)

  * Two Factor Authentication apps like Duo, PingID, Authy

  * ICloud Accounts

  * Stored passwords

  * Login tokens for various apps like email, social media, etc

  * Browser Cookies

  * Applet Wallet Data
Nbox9··on 37% of the world’s population have still never used the internet
The global imprisoned population is less than 10Million, or a rounding error when discussing the global population. Seniors? Well that’s a large portion of the population, but they are more concentrated in developed nations that have had the internet longer.
Nbox9··on 37% of the world’s population have still never used the internet
Having access to banking, electricity, and the internet are inherently good things. I hope 100% of people have access to these things and use them as freely as they would like to. When people have limited access to resources they are most vulnerable to being treated unfairly.
Nbox9··on You block ads in your browser, why not in your city?
The “A plot” was closer to the book than the “B plot”, but the A plot was weakened too. The digital/virtual torture scene has the single most glaring omission. However, thematically the Hollywood version of Quellism is the single biggest change, as it alters the motives of many characters. Event by event the “A plot” is close to the book, but it tones down the raw anarchy of the book.
Nbox9··on Shrooms: What You Need to Know
Different mushroom species have different quantities of active ingredients. Describing the dry weight of a mushroom is really only a secondary measurement of the active ingredients.

Elsewhere on the website they compare 2.4g of mushrooms to about 100ug of LSD. So 1.7g of mushrooms would be equivalent of about 45ug of LSD, and the micro dose range of LSD is 5-25ug. Tripsafe is attempting to describe a light dose, which should include only minor visuals. They are likely using P. Cubensis to describe dosage, which is very common in North America, but only half the potency of the most potent psychedelic mushrooms. “Liberty cabs” or P. Semilanceata are more common in Europe, and are often more potent than P. Cubensis.

There might also be a cultural difference on the expectations for a psychedelic experiences and the activities one should do during it.

Nbox9··on Exiled from the Metaverse before it even started: Facebook bans are for life
From my perspective TikTok is worse because it’s algorithm is better at holding human addition, and it’s headquarters is located in an authoritative country. I don’t have any evidence to defend these statements, and it’s quite possible propaganda has influenced by opinion here. I’d love to hear from the experts.
Nbox9··on Ontario Court Declares the Ontario Math Proficiency Test Unconstitutional
Root comment states that language skills are required for teaching all subjects, and math is also fundamental to all subjects. Root comment is of the “unpopular opinion” (their words, I consider this phrase to be an emotional appeal when used in this context) that some basic skills are required of everyone in the teaching profession, regardless of the age or subject they teach, and that those basic skills include mathematics.
Nbox9··on DARPA open sources resources to aid evaluation of adversarial AI defenses
“ART provides tools that enable developers and researchers to defend and evaluate their ML models and applications against a number of adversarial threats, such as evasion, poisoning, extraction, and inference.”

The first two attacks, evasion & poisoning highlight the incredible importance of having high quality data when training models. Evasion is false-negatives that are allowed because the model did not have a diverse enough selection of training data and poisoning can occur when the data sources are not well vetted. Data quality is probably the single biggest problem with ML models, and I wish we’d see more of a focus on it.

Nbox9··on Boeing, Airbus executives urge delay in U.S. 5G wireless deployment
Safety culture has scored some huge wins in the last 100 years. Decreased auto fatality rates, safer home materials (lead paint & asbestosis), expiration dates on food, reduced second hand smoke rates, hand washing in hospitals. Let’s not snub our nose as people that work to make a safer world.

Nbox9··on Does Georgism Work? Part 2: Can Landlords Pass Land Value Tax on to Tenants?
