NameNickHN··on Dropbox buys Audiogalaxy
They already have a huge user base. If they can provide additional features and make money from it, why not do it?
NameNickHN··on Google Maps for iOS
> 1) Search for "Google Maps" and it is the 5th result. The app is literally called Google Maps. The results before: Fine Maps, PD Maps Worldwide Edition, Google Earth(?!).

I suspect that this is simply due to some part of the searching algorithm that takes things like number of downloads and publishing date into account. Over time the position will probably change.

NameNickHN··on It's not ok to publicly announce who has signed up for your app
The way they did this is shady and annoying. Why don't they use some kind of opt-in. For example a button that says "Mention my sign-up on Twitter".
NameNickHN··on Browser Wars Flare Again, on Little Screens
Fast movers like Google and their browsers are setting the pace. Luckily for the users, most of the other browser vendors are trying to keep up. I don't see any wars. I only see a healthy competition.
NameNickHN··on Google wreaks havoc on our company’s calendars: lost data and security breaches
This sounds like a severe technical problem that has to be analyzed and fixed by real experts. I doubt that these kind of people do night and weekend shifts. And unless the problem is widespread, I don't think they're calling those experts in from their weekends for a single incident.
NameNickHN··on Vibration API
The browser should offer some kind of permission system (like with the GPS sensor) that would ask the user if a website has permissions to access the vibrate API.
NameNickHN··on 1and1's Ruby FAQ
Intuitive (or quality for that matter) and 1and1 don't go well together. Telling people to use the extension .pl for Ruby files is exactly what I expect from them.
NameNickHN··on Virginia woman sued over Yelp review
Wouldn't it have been better for her to contact a lawyer instead of escalating the issue and probably damaging her cause by publishing her side of the story?
NameNickHN··on Cleartrip fires PR agency after “three strikes” of spamming
Original article:

http://blog.cleartrip.com/2012/12/05/why-we-fired-our-pr-age...

Why the PR agency didn't stop after the first "talk" from their clients is beyond me. They're either really dumb, incompetent or really brazen. Or an unholy combination of all three.

NameNickHN··on Facebook HQ Urges Employees to Ditch iPhone for Android
Facebook will of course integrate Microsoft products with Facebook and vice versa. But that shouldn't stop them from offering Facebook to other platforms. And to do that well, they need to use and work with those other platforms. It wouldn't be a good idea for Microsoft to interfere in that department.
NameNickHN··on Github and Stackoverflow programming language popularity
I would think so. Android has motivated a lot of people (myself included) to start programming in Java.
NameNickHN··on Facebook HQ Urges Employees to Ditch iPhone for Android
I don't think it would be wise for Microsoft to interfere with Facebook's day-to-day activities and Microsoft probably knows this.
NameNickHN··on About today's App Engine outage
No, it doesn't. It sounds exactly like 10% of the monthly fee.
NameNickHN··on Don't Worry About Your Productivity, Worry About You
If the cut-off from reddit and hacker news works for the op, then good. But as a general advice it sucks. Reddit and hacker news are both useful and fun. Why get rid of it? The trick is to balance things out, not swinging the axe.
NameNickHN··on In Europe, Speed Cameras Meet Their Technological Match
The number of users is large enough now that even mobile speed cameras are now thoroughly reported for all but the really sparsely inhabited areas.
NameNickHN··on In Europe, Speed Cameras Meet Their Technological Match
In Switzerland, for example, you will lose the device. But in Germany, apps on smartphones or tablet PCs are considered legal. Only devices whose sole purpose is warning of speed cameras, are banned.
NameNickHN··on In Europe, Speed Cameras Meet Their Technological Match
The app from blitzer.de (called CamSam in the various app stores) lets you know if there is a section control ahead. If you're still speeding, that's your own fault, I guess.

It's also planned to display the average speed during a section control, but that is not part yet of the current version, I believe.

NameNickHN··on Bootstrap Maintainers Leave Twitter
I wished there would have been something like Bootstrap 10-12 years ago. As a developer it would have made my life a lot easier. Since design is not really my area of expertise, I often struggled to make a decent backend/administration area for my applications. I started to use Bootstrap recently and can't believe how much fun it is to use and how much quicker I'm getting results.
NameNickHN··on Steve Jobs’ Reality Distortion Field Lives On
> What is he even complaining about?

I thought that was pretty clear. He thinks that "Apple briefs these guys, but instead of having the balls to do it on the record, Apple feeds them some spin with the condition that they will write it up while attributing their info to sources who are familiar with the situation."

Too bad that there is no way to know if he is right if it is just his opinion. Doesn't sound too far fetched, though.

NameNickHN··on Face detection for cats in JavaScript
What browser and platform are you using? I'm using Firefox and it's working fine for me.
NameNickHN··on Internet Funding Boom Ends as Fast as It Began
> In the aftermath, investor questions turned "a complete 180 degrees" > and they wanted to know how Doximity would make money, said the > entrepreneur.

That's outrageous. How dare they asing questions? They are supposed to just fork over the money.

Honestly, 17 millions instead of 20 millions is not a sign of an ending funding boom. Investors may have become a bit more cautious after the Facebook IPO but that doesn't mean that they stop funding startups.

NameNickHN··on Leak shows EU's plans for large scale surveillance of all communications
Email spam is responsive for 85%-95% of all emails. That's almost all. Yet, nobody would seriously suggest to ban email.
NameNickHN··on IOS6 and the Two Year Life Span
Even open source projects offer long term support. Why don't they at least fix security issues?
NameNickHN··on Leak shows EU's plans for large scale surveillance of all communications
> This is some horrible stuff, and there's very little > one can do about it really.

Not quite. It still has to become EU law and then the EU member states have to accept it. There are still chances to axe this. See ACTA.

NameNickHN··on Leak shows EU's plans for large scale surveillance of all communications
> Spammers/scammers use Tor. And they use it in a big way.

Yes, and they use the rest of the internet, too. Maybe we should ban everything.

NameNickHN··on Short overview to: Why don’t more startups target the enterprise
Another reason could be that many startups create a product that scratches an itch. They were looking for something as a consumer, didn't find it and started a company to create that something. In this scenario most products and services will probably be consumer targeted.

Also, few enterprise level companies are prepared to buy from small and/or new companies. So, why bother?

NameNickHN··on New Apple maps app under fire from users
Apple probably underestimated the complexity of creating and providing useful maps. I read an article recently that explained how much effort Google puts into their maps. From what I understand, every map tile has been manually reviewed and reworked based on satellite images and the data from the Google street view cars. Google is years ahead of Apple with this. It'll take a while until Apple's maps are par with Google's.
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: Is Facebook selling phone number or can it be scraped?
If it's publicly visible (logged in or not), then it can be scraped.
NameNickHN··on Show HN: Download-free screensharing for better customer support
If there is a market for this, great. But even though I do user support on a daily basis, I don't see myself using this anytime soon. I rather create screen casts or take screen shots. It's exactly the same thing, but I only have to do it once and then it can be viewed by everyone. I also like to have instructions written down, either in a support forum or in an e-mail. The user can go back and read the instructions again, if he struggles with the same problem the next time. Also, I can write most support e-mails in less then five minutes. Phone calls take way longer most of the times.
NameNickHN··on Google Apps update alerts: Internet Explorer 8 support discontinued
This is just FUD. What places?
