Namari··on Ask HN: I am lost in life. How do I fix this?
Exactly!
Namari··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
No the real issue is not the gaps themselves but why so many different jobs that don't last long. Tech evolves fast but in a week or 2 you're up to date if you've been away few months. I have many gaps in my resume but I have many different jobs, which is a lot more problematic. A question that pops up often is why did I left after X months and I need to explain all my choices. It is fine because I either didn't like the projects/companies, I wanted to switch technologies ... they do ask why 6 month off and that seems fine when I tell them I've been travelling.
Namari··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
I have many gaps in my resume, like 6 months here, few months there ... at the points it looks like I worked 2/3 of the time over the last 10 years. Sometime recruiters ask me why and I tell the truth that I went travelling, that I needed some time off. Why I had so many different jobs ... It may be a deal breaker for some but it doesn't seem to bother everyone as I've never had trouble finding a job, it could be because the market was in need of my skills, I guess IT people should worry much about that.
Namari··on Ask HN: I am lost in life. How do I fix this?
Exactly! The problem is people are scared to leave their confort zone while it's what will make them happier, it's kind of ironic. I didn't know that saying and it's pretty accurate! People always say some are "lucky" to go travelling, while in reality "Luck" is at everyone's reach but they just don't have the courage and motivation to do it.
Namari··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
Take some time off mate, travel for few months. Then you can do online tutorial (Like Udemy...) there are good ones but you won't be able to do them if you're 90 hours a week.

My best recommendation is to look for a new job, tell them you have a 2 month notice period and take this month you got to travel somewhere and think of something else.

Remember, you work to live, not the opposite!

Namari··on Ask HN: I am lost in life. How do I fix this?
If you're in a position where you can quit/take few months off, Do It. Use that time to travel (backpacking is easier), try countries that are completly different from your own culture, South/Central America and South East Asia are great for that.

This will make you understand yourself better, especially when noone you know is around you judging you.

Don't be the person that is scared to travel by itself, if you're always with people you'll never know yourself and right now you need some time to think about your life.

Keep in mind traveling by yourself give you more opportunity to meet people and get closer to the culture, moreover if you go to Hostel you'll meet many people doing the same and you can tag along.

A change in environment is what you need to change all your Toxic Routine habits you're stuck into.

Let's assume you do a 2 weeks trek to Everest Base Camp (super easy), you'll sure won't care about any IT crap and you'll be damn right, this may help you realise life is about doing the things you like, work to live and not the opposite.

If you're in no position to travel, try to get out of your confort zone, break your routine.

Namari··on Mosquitoes kill more than 700k people every year (2017)
So the only thing that doesn't kill you in Australia is Mosquitoes, who would have though that!
Namari··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Age of Wonders was great! They've done some really good mods with new units, more maps and changing the difficult so the heroes are not too strong.
Namari··on Airbnb Q1
Yes in London and it's a room in a houseshare but maybe it's more like 800£ all included than 900.
Namari··on Airbnb Q1
I am actually doing it right now, I pay about 1.2k for something that should be around 900 all included. Yes it's more but it's not double or triple as you suggest.
Namari··on I earned $160k in passive income from writing non-fiction books
True but this is not as much work as writing a book, moreover it could turn out as a liability if the stocks go down.
Namari··on I earned $160k in passive income from writing non-fiction books
I guess writing a book is "labor" but "royalties" out of it are passive income, I guess it's a mix of both. But Royalties cannot be achieved in that case without the Labor of writing the book
Namari··on Japan’s plan to dump nuclear waste into the pacific ocean may not be safe
We could dig dip and move people, it's not like they are millions. Better moving them than ruining Ocean life that feeds us.
Namari··on Japan’s plan to dump nuclear waste into the pacific ocean may not be safe
True but at this point it's not just a Japanese problem but a world wide one, if they dump it in the ocean, it could affect all the life that live there and consequently human life that feeds of it. It reminds me of the WW2 boats that are still in the Oceans leaking toxic products and nobody wants to pay to take them out.
Namari··on Japan’s plan to dump nuclear waste into the pacific ocean may not be safe
Why not dropping that to the Sahara or to any remote desert that nobody lives?
Namari··on I earned $160k in passive income from writing non-fiction books
Passive income is income that can be earned automatically with minimal labor to earn or maintain. I guess you can't really call that passive if you spend time working for it. It's not like an investment that you buy once and gives your income each month.

PS: Sadly writing can pay off as much as giving you nothing (money wise).

Namari··on Sumerian dog jokes, or the difficulty of translating dead languages
The “pun” in Sumerian is centred on the fact that the verb “to see” also literally means “open (one’s) eye”.
Namari··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
Isn't the paint already made out of lead? Or couldn't it be the percentage to be too low? Windows letting radiation in too.
Namari··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
Ah I see! What alloy do you think could block the cosmic ray radiation, I though lead was doing that, isn't there enough of it on the paint? Or maybe the windows are letting the radiation in?
Namari··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
Hmm could this also be because they have to get through the x-ray scanners more often than regular travellers?
Namari··on OpenSSH switches to using gender-neutral language
Well I think the use of "they" is wrong, it's like teaching people the wrong way, no surprise why kids these days don't know how to write and talk. I don't mind people being different but it's no excuse to make up stupid words just so you can feel accepted or better.
Namari··on OpenSSH switches to using gender-neutral language
"They" sounds like someone with multiple personalities...
Namari··on Hacker deleted all of NewsBlur’s Mongo data and is now holding the data hostage
This happened to us on a test DB as well and from what we've seen on the network traffic they was not much there, less than 1MB or something. So you can be sure they have not stored your data and you will not be able to recover anything. Pretty expected from someone who only ask so little.

Namari··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
The article says Whatsapp will now share:

    * User phone numbers
    * Other people’s phone numbers stored in address books
    * Profile names
    * Profile pictures and
    * Status message including when a user was last online
    * Diagnostic data collected from app logs
and already was getting:

Namari··on Graphqurl: Curl for GraphQL, with Autocomplete and Subscriptions
Nice work, I guess it could be useful, though I would only use CLI if there is no other way, it's not easy to read compared to the one on Playground/GraphiQL

Namari··on The opioid effects of gluten exorphins: asymptomatic celiac disease (2015)
I had the same as you, the GP made me do a blood test which was negative, my symptoms were being bloated and farting a lot (with awful smell). I stopped eating gluten for a while then slowly reintroducing it after couple of month in a non refined form (muesli). Now I can handle it much better than before but I suspect that could have been IBS and not only a gluten intolerance. Check out if lactose isn't the culprit, they put it in too many things that you wouldn't expect. Also having a good microbiota is really important, so you could give a try to Probiotics and PrEbiotics.
