NHQ··on SonoBus: High-quality, low-latency peer-to-peer audio
I'm not prepared for testing and debugging at real-world breadth!
NHQ··on SonoBus: High-quality, low-latency peer-to-peer audio
My stock assumption is that most people will have perfectly adequate network bandwidth for good quality audio streaming. Most of connected world already does. My mobile to mobile tests have been as good I as could want.
NHQ··on The New York Times is wrong about Haiti
> The author of this post feels the NYT glossed over the facts in order to paint a narrative.

They must be new on planet earth.

It is not even about right or wrong. The question is, what does the NYT narrative serve? Is it anti-french? The last time the U.S. had an official anti-French attitude was before the invasion of Iraq. Perhaps they are trying to give the French Globalists something to browbeat against the French Nationalists.

NHQ··on SonoBus: High-quality, low-latency peer-to-peer audio
I recently made a P2P audio broadcast app, also HD quality, and low latency, and it runs in all major browsers, including mobile, no app download. It also supports listener call-ins, and music/file streaming in the mix. What should I do with this technology?
NHQ··on “Amateur” programmer fought cancer with 50 Nvidia Geforce 1080Ti
It literally means "for the love".
NHQ··on Congress urged to ease immigration for foreign science talent
That would be CA's interest because those employees will definitely be paying state income tax.
NHQ··on Monarch: Google’s Planet-Scale In-Memory Time Series Database
Is it lossy to store data this way?
NHQ··on Monarch: Google’s Planet-Scale In-Memory Time Series Database
Is this lossy?
NHQ··on Astronomers reveal first image of the black hole at the heart of our galaxy
This image came out several years ago or I have seen the future.

NHQ··on Netlify Edge Functions: A new serverless runtime powered by Deno
I don't want edge functions, I want edge appliances. An edge function means I still have to run my own janky devops for that specific appliance. Edge IPv6 Appliances or Bust.
NHQ··on Supabase Edge Functions
I very much like the idea of automagic edge compute but would like to see the analytics. I am skeptical of the edgey claims, even for cloudflare. Where are the nodes? How do they each tend to respond? I want a map with every node being lit up in real time. I want to be able to test nodes by location etc.
NHQ··on Hyper-realistic digital humans in Unity
No predictions, just an explainer of how AI agents are trained. For instance, RL is about presenting an environment via rules (gravity, etc), and letting the agent learn its way around, thus discovering what it can and cannot do (a policy for the environment).
NHQ··on Hyper-realistic digital humans in Unity
Movement won't be pre-baked, a physics engine sim will be baked in to the neural network, and movements will be another dimension for the deep learning network. And then all of that will be baked into an agent that has been trained to carry out motives (with a simulation of your character, etc). The same applies to speech as movement. And the deep-learned compression rate will be magnificent.
NHQ··on You cannot police misinformation in a fair, reproducible, and representative way
There is no such thing as misinformation. Whatever you want to call it, it is information all the same.

One bot's info is another bot's entropy.

NHQ··on Meta Threatens Europe Exit for Facebook, Instagram on Data Rules
Zuck is not threatening to starve Europeans of insta, Zuck is threatening to take away the most expedient propaganda tool a government ever had. Zuck is overtly threatening the political class that relies on his psychotic technology.
NHQ··on FBI used geofence warrant in Seattle after BLM protest attack, documents show
What you are missing is the fact that Google is protecting rights against the state; but they could just as easily decide to give up all the data instead of anonymizing and parsing it for them.

When corporations are holding the privacy line against the state, there are wolves in the pasture.

NHQ··on 500M Avira antivirus users introduced to cryptomining
Get ahead of your ransom payments today.
NHQ··on The SEC Crackdown on DeFi Is Imminent
All they want is for companies to act like they are publicly traded, i.e. file an S-1 and provide relevant information? Hold my beer...
NHQ··on Should a dog's sniff be enough to convict a person for murder?
A dog cannot take the stand and be questioned, so how can it provide witness?
NHQ··on What do I need to read to be a CSS dev?
CSS is easy to understand, simple to use, and impossible to debug.
NHQ··on I keep making things out of checkboxes
I too keep making things out of checkboxes and radio buttons; increasingly my tool-like UIs are dominated by variations on the label/input CSS trick. Naturally, that is what I thought the article was about; but everything the author does can be done equally simplistically with canvas, webGL, divs, text; the demos are more about the parsing of the input than the display technique.
NHQ··on Moths in slow motion [video]
We could design human flight like that, what are we waiting for? Literally self-powered flight; human pedals, the A.I. directs the flap mechanism.
NHQ··on Americans' Trust in Media Dips to Second Lowest on Record
Who is the media again?
NHQ··on The Missing ”WHERE” Clause for Vector Search
Neural networks.
NHQ··on Demonopolizing the Internet with Interoperability
> Reality check: ISPs sell your information. They’re pretty much the last people you should trust.

Exactly why we should regulate IP address and protocols, so that every company that handles them is beholden to the same conditions for preserving our privacy. Instead we play whack-a-mole regulating individual company behavior, while they continue to control the protocols and addresses and everything on top of those layers.

NHQ··on Demonopolizing the Internet with Interoperability
Everything would be a different paradigm than we have now. Security, auth, sharing; we can only imagine how things would shift if we turned the model we have on its head. Super cookie? ISP is a private VPN proivder now.

Cookies are a good example. That browsers give up a cookie at all—who consented to this specification? GDPR could have changed browser specs so that cookies were truly opt-in; it regulates company behavior instead, which is weak.

Fundamentally, our choices are being made for us at the protocol level, and everything we have as a result is emergent, and so people argue about regulating the emergent properties.

NHQ··on Demonopolizing the Internet with Interoperability
Interoperability needs to be brought all the back to the protocol. Force ISPs to give people static, public IP addresses. Then the tech industry has to build local-first, P2P apps, and what was once a dominant social network is now just another interface competing with features people actually want.

What is broken about the internet is that we don't have our own addresses, like in real life. (Cue security red-scare and condescending technical types who think it's too complicated for the user.)

NHQ··on Something big just hit Jupiter
If it hit Jupiter on the inner orbit side, then whatever struck the outer planet already missed us (if it was ever within our orbit to begin with). Since we can see the impact from Earth, it must have struck the inner orbit side.
NHQ··on Peermaps – distributed, offline-friendly alternative to commercial map providers
If there is ever a robust, truly P2P web, your peers will be your filters. IOW, your filters will anneal and morph according to the canonical filters created by your trust network—a delegation of peers, filtered via parameters of your choosing. This goes for everything from search to spam block.

It is not all about scale. Much of P2P web development is idealistically about designing a more subjective internet.
