NHQ··on Twitter confirms zero-day used to expose data of 5.4M accounts
The article claims for Twitter a "zero-day" without giving any details. Is this better or worse than "mistakes were made"?

NHQ··on How do you break into a career in machine learning? (2020)
Be consistent, a move to industry makes you industrial. It takes mere oath to profess.
NHQ··on How do you break into a career in machine learning? (2020)
What of the engineer, who mastered a more complex domain on his own, perhaps innovates in that same domain regularly, do you suppose he can do the academic research?
NHQ··on How do you break into a career in machine learning? (2020)
At the end of the day, it is about engineering. I'm self taught as a programmer, and I have also translated the latest deep learning paperwork into live code, AND i have novel research and experiments in code repos (not papers).

The thing lacking is a hacker's credibility as an ML researcher, which i think is ironically preposterous given the self-teaching of complex domains with engineered proof.

I don't see what an PhD has on the class of self taught hackers is what I'm trying to say. Just kidding, I know the answer is that they are trained in a certain institutional mentality. Give me my downvotes.

Are these academic types great engineers? Do you find that the academics have a major edge in domain knowledge over self taught programmer?

NHQ··on Under anesthesia, where do our minds go?
> It's entirely possible that consciousness is just post-factum rationalization of what the body did.

If that were the sole reality my case would still stand, for you then become aware of something you did, and react; ergo consciousness does effect the body, etc. This is basic physics.

Nor does your argument exclude mine. Why would you need consciousness if it was merely "post-factum rationalization" with no feedback effect? By your logic, we could live exactly the same without the consciousness.

NHQ··on You Don't Need Microservices
You don't medium dot com either.
NHQ··on Under anesthesia, where do our minds go?
You are conflating abstract reasoning with consciousness. Your invisible line has no effect on the substrate, because the line does not exists. Consciousness effects the mind/brain/body complex.

The lines you describe are placed by your intuition. Most math is intuitive as such, and exists outside of mind, which is why anybody can "discover" axioms, ratios, etc.

If your notion was correct, only a perfect atomic ordering inside the brain would create a precise and useful thought, such as how to find the ratio of radius to diameter.

NHQ··on Soon, life for 40M people who depend on the Colorado River will change
I'm downvoted for suggesting that the LA river was okay ecologically, extremely utilitarian, and that the cutting off its flow was a conspiracy with effects made obvious by this article about LA's other water source, the Colorado River.

The making of the LA river was a conspiracy! You people don't know anything, you just think yr smart.

NHQ··on Soon, life for 40M people who depend on the Colorado River will change
Climate control ideology grows right out of "climate change doesn't care about you*". This happens precisely because people like yourself wield "climate change" politically, and thus give power to groups that pretend to care about your concerns.

Ecologies are important discussions, science is an important argument, and weaponizing climate change is basic ideology at work (same as all pseudo protectionist politics).

NHQ··on Soon, life for 40M people who depend on the Colorado River will change
Yet the Los Angeles river, with sources diverted away from saline lakes, has been cut in half over the years for pretend ecological issues. This is how the climate control ideology gains power.

NHQ··on Ask HN: Are visa holder getting laid off first?
Sounds like it would be better/fair to have a moratorium on Visas.
NHQ··on Ask HN: Are visa holder getting laid off first?
If there are layoffs happening, that means there are workers available for jobs that are going to Visa holders. That does not make any sense to me.
NHQ··on Ask HN: Are visa holder getting laid off first?
Do you think there should policy one way or another? It was policy that got them their visa workers in the first place, and that supposedly to fill jobs they could not with stock workforce. If there are layoffs, there are local workers.
