NDizzle··on How much have tech layoffs affected engineers vs. other departments?
And you don’t think you’re doing the same?!
NDizzle··on Nearly half of Covid patients haven’t fully recovered months later, study finds
I gotta protect myself from "suddenly", a crisis which is sweeping the world.
NDizzle··on Do you remember Ultima Online?
UO is responsible for my career. Not the game itself, but the community. A connection I made in that in that game gave a rural kid like me a couch to land on in the Bay Area. The rest is history, as one says.

Alpha ran through my family of 5 around Christmas time, 2020. We were down 4-6 days, that was it.

Everyone operating normally since then, my kids play a lot of sports at a high level. I coach, exercise, etc, while not in my best shape ever, it’s mostly cause of limited time.

No vaccines, won’t ever get them.

NDizzle··on All Twitter users in the US will start to see crowdsourced fact checks on tweets
Oh boy. Crowdsourced facts. More equals better than, right?! Ridiculous.

NDizzle··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
Way, way too much government.

I don't understand why people are cheering for this. Why is a government body telling companies what kind of power adapter to use?!

NDizzle··on The Anthropology of Farming Simulator
For me, it's Snow Runner. Mud Runner had a more challenging UI. Snow Runner is a bit better. Not perfect, but better.

You have simple tasks and an open world for you to decide how to accomplish the task. There's typically an easy way, which requires more time to complete due to the travel distance involved. And then you can scale all the way up however difficult you want.

And then there's the recovery effort, when your "it didn't look that deep/muddy/steep" plan falls through.

I do like the farming games though. Or at least I did, until I bought 5 acres in the country and got out here. Now if I get the itch for a farming game, I do some kind of project.

NDizzle··on Ask HN: How to get fast cellular internet in rural areas
It depends on your tower. I'm "barely rural" I guess you would say. However my LTE tower had plenty of 4g bandwidth, and just got updated to 5g, where I get 5guc at my house. My phone can pull 500mbit from the tower now.

I haven't quite pulled the trigger on buying a 5g modem, but this blows Starlink away currently. I have v1 Starlink, the round dish, and the upgrade path to this these kind of speeds is $$$.

What's unknown to me is how aggressive the LTE carriers will be with throttling / keeping an eye with data caps.

LTE FIX to get an idea for components and some links for information: https://ltefix.com/

I've had Starlink for over a year, but I maintain a solid 4G LTE backup connection that I fire up during primetime and on the weekends.

NDizzle··on Twilio CEO announces 11% in 'Anti-Racist' focused layoffs
It’s still early, plenty of time for that one to be outdone.
NDizzle··on HAProxy: How to temporary disable a back end server using the command line
A lot of just don't realize how and where it's used. I'm almost 100% positive that Microsoft uses HAProxy (open source or commercial license I couldn't tell you) to power App Services on Azure. Yet you'll get friction from CTOs at "Microsoft shops" for choosing HAProxy to use yourself.
NDizzle··on Excuse me but why are you eating so many frogs
I had this exact conversation with my 3 month old puppy just the other day. Toads, though.
NDizzle··on Surging Energy Prices in Europe in the Aftermath of the War
It's easy to pivot to "the aftermath of war", but plenty, PLENTY of people and organizations pointed out that reliance on imported energy, especially from Russia, was not a great idea.
NDizzle··on [dead]
Very common after getting an MRNA vaccine, too.
NDizzle··on Ask HN: Why are energy prices soaring in Europe?
Hubris. Queue up the videos of Trump pointing that out to laughter.
NDizzle··on Too many Americans live in places built for cars – not for human connection
Where, with a landmass the size of the US, in the world is it done better than in the US?

If the crusaders on this mission want to carve up SF/Seattle/Portland/DC/NYC to build whatever it is you think is better, please do. Good luck. You can't even build housing in SF, but go ahead. Redesign the cities to be whatever you want.

I'm completely done with cities and I'm not alone, never again to return. Even 78 people per square mile, where I am now, is slightly too many. Once the kids are done with school I'll reassess, and probably move even further out.

NDizzle··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
Same situation with even modern land cruisers, with the exception of the hvac system in the top end models. A common modification is to order the base model modules from Australia and get rid of all the touch screen components.
NDizzle··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
Windows server licenses[1]!? Even looking at EC2 it's nearly 3x more expensive to run Windows than Linux, at a glance[2].

NDizzle··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
Code does... Visual Studio itself not so much.

Why is that a requirement to take it seriously? I've been deploying apps developed in OSX/Windows to linux boxes for 20 years...

NDizzle··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
Cost... linux images should be a fraction of the cost of a Windows image. Unless, of course, you're using Azure, where they subsidize the cost of SQL Server by charging more for linux boxes/containers.

NDizzle··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
I mean, you could buy a 3 bed / 1.5 bath house in the bay area for around $200k in 2000. 5x is roughly correct, easily.
NDizzle··on Ask HN: What are the best tools for web scraping in 2022?
SEC database… 10-K, 10-Q, 20-F.
NDizzle··on Electric Vehicles Are Going to Suck; Here's Why [video]
You fixed a wrecked Tesla?! What repairs have you accomplished?
NDizzle··on What the Hell Is Up with Dilbert?
"In other words, people who are racist against white people just have an anti-white bias. People that are racist against black people are actual racists."

This is such an insane statement I don't even know how to reply on a site like HN. Do you personally believe this, or are you just pasting what the (recently modified, I'm sure) current definition of "racism" is?

NDizzle··on FedEx to close data centers, retire mainframes
Obviously he's been working with javascript recently.
NDizzle··on What do Starlink’s latest Ookla results mean for its RDOF winnings?
My experience, lately (the last ~2 months) is that Starlink is oversold. I switch to my backup LTE connection during prime time evening hours in order to stream anything at a reasonable clip. Perhaps it is my base station that's overwhelmed, but I'm not that impressed anymore.
NDizzle··on Why is life expectancy in the US lower than in other rich countries? (2020)
Excess... drive by one of your local dialysis centers. I wonder what percentage of diabetics are type 1 in the US? Has to be a tiny percent, just using my eyeballs and looking around.
NDizzle··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
One more data point here. As a father of three it took me a month to get around to doing a 2-3 hr take home coding exercise. I clocked in at about 2h15m, but yes, really, it took me a month to find 2.25 free hours with the energy required to even begin something like a take home coding thing.
