NDizzle··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
I have never seen a company that uses multiple AV products rolled out to user machines, ever. Sure, when you transition from one product to another, but across the whole company, at the same time? Never... I have also never seen a distribution of something like active directory servers based on antivirus software. I think these stories are purely academic, "why didn't you just..." tall tales.
NDizzle··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
You use multiple anti-virus products. Let's assume you use 3. Do you have multiple clusters of machines, each running their own AV product, so in case one has this problem the other two are unaffected?

How much overhead are we talking about here? Because if you're just using multiple AV software installed on one machine, 1) holy shit, the performance penalty, 2) you'd still be impacted by this, as CS would have taken it down.

NDizzle··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
While this is a great theory, how would you actually accomplish this with antivirus software?

Multiple machines, each one using different vendor software? What other software needs to be partitioned this way? What about combinations of this software?

I’m just barely awake but don’t know if I’m affected yet. One of my devs is, our client support staff is, and I have no idea how our servers are doing just yet.

NDizzle··on Are We Living in the Roaring 20s?
Don't reward single parents... reward families staying together and raising their kids how they want to, as decided by each individual family. There is a drastic statistical difference between those raised in family units vs single parent households... It's even significantly better to have grandparents (note the plural) raise a kid than a single parent.

That is why you drink it from a spring. Let the earth filter it for you. Don't catch it with... a plastic tarp.
NDizzle··on Plastic Found Inside More Than 50% of Plaques from Clogged Arteries
Live off the land, in a cabin in the woods. With Starlink and a solar / battery array.
NDizzle··on Heat Pumps Take on Cold Climates
Yep, correct. As many have pointed out in this thread though, HVAC is full of trade offs. I COULD get a bigger heat exchanger.. Although my furnace is already a 5 ton unit. The question is, in the Ozarks, where I am, are the 1-4 days a year where it's too cold to run the heat pump worth paying the extra money for the larger system?

I added an efficient wood stove instead. There's a good tax rebate that covers installation as well - I took advantage of that last year.

NDizzle··on Heat Pumps Take on Cold Climates
It's my experience that they do stop working completely at some temp. The defrost cycle creeps up to 100% and there goes the heat.

NDizzle··on Americans don't believe middle class can afford homes
> Why get a 30 year mortgage at 40, to only pay it off at 70 and then die in two decades?

1) Inflation hedge. 2) At some point in the next 30 years, you will be able to sell your home at / above what you paid for it, just due to the cyclical nature of things.

I'm not saying real estate always goes up... but for example, I bought at age 41. $515k. Current estimated value, $900k. When the kids are all graduated and out of the house (when I'm 53-54ish) I can sell this, buy something outright in cash, and increase my saving rate from ~35% to about 60% without any change in my current standard of living.

NDizzle··on Americans don't believe middle class can afford homes
Dot com boom and 2008, moreso 2008, that 30% slid up to around 50%. People justified it to themselves because, as mentioned elsewhere, "Real estate always goes up!"
NDizzle··on Americans don't believe middle class can afford homes
With sliding definitions of both "middle class" and "afford" I believe this answer will always be "no".
NDizzle··on Electric Car Owners Confront a Harsh Foe: Cold Weather
On long journeys I stop every 300-350 miles. Bladders can't make it longer than that, although the cars certainly can. I wouldn't stop at all on a 275 mile trip. I would fill up before I return, however.
NDizzle··on Electric Car Owners Confront a Harsh Foe: Cold Weather
You had to stop 3 times for a 275 mile drive?!
NDizzle··on Electric Car Owners Confront a Harsh Foe: Cold Weather
My RAV4 prime with "42 miles of range" hits 0 in 22 miles of freeway driving with the temps around 10F outside right now.
NDizzle··on Electric Car Owners Confront a Harsh Foe: Cold Weather
Anyone who has driven long distances in the cold (where you can calculate your mpg easily, as you are just driving all day, what else are you doing?) knows that is bullshit. My van that gets 20-25 mpg in the summer gets... 20-25 mpg in the winter. The only time it's affected is when I'm crossing the rockies. Mountains...
NDizzle··on Electric Car Owners Confront a Harsh Foe: Cold Weather
Yes. And then when you left, did you have an accurate gauge of exactly how far you could travel? Did you have stops along the way to add fuel in a reasonable amount of time? Did you have reliable, strong heat in the cabin?

I want EVs to be there too, but they just aren't.

Which versions of linux cleanly update? What do I do with an old Centos 7 system?
NDizzle··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
People have range anxiety because the electric range estimates are just that - estimates. If not lies. I have a '22 RAV4 Prime. I had a '17 Volt for 3 years before that. I'm aware of how it works. Here's real world for you, NW Arkansas: I'm 24 miles from Lowe's round trip. 11 miles freeway, the rest is country highway. 42 miles of "range" on my RAV4 this time of year, when I return home I have 6 to 7 miles remaining. It's off by 20% or more.

Do you think I could go to Tulsa and back, 212 miles round trip, this Saturday in an all electric thing? Cherokee turnpike for a large portion of it, cruise control at 82 mph.

I think a lot of you city dwellers need to re-examine how you think "flyover states" work. But I know you won't, as you don't care about us, so you'll just keep these wrong thoughts in your head pushing policy on us from afar. It's working great for relations in our country so far, keep it up.

Doesn't need lockers or solid axles?

Needs a few software updates to mimic the features of those components.

Here's my answer, living in Arkansas.

Body on frame? Solid axles? Lockers?

Missing any of those, not a truck.

California, the state? What about a jury in Redding, CA? That's what we're looking at here. Does Munich make decisions for all of Germany?!
NDizzle··on Munich court tells Netflix to stop using H.265 video coding to stream UHD
Isn't Netflix an American company? How would Volvo feel if a Kansas court told them to do something?

Tell them to fuck off and try to enforce the ruling. Go on with life. Way too many power tripping judges these days.

NDizzle··on California wants to end Cupertino's tax deal with Apple
How does that saying go? Make the tax payers responsible for the government's poor decisions... take credit for private (in this case, municipality) successes, which aren't shared with the tax payer.

I hope this doesn't happen. The government in California is an absolute mess and deserves everything coming to them.
