Mystery-Machine··on Proton Pass end-to-end encrypted password manager is here and free for everyone
Yeah, I have the exact same issue with them.
Mystery-Machine··on Proton Pass end-to-end encrypted password manager is here and free for everyone
Thank you, I believe that was obvious to everyone.
Mystery-Machine··on A proto-pizza emerges from a fresco on a Pompeii wall
The very first sentence: Whilst it looks like a pizza, this image from a Pompeian painting from 2000 years ago obviously can't be, since some of the most characteristic ingredients are missing, namely tomatoes and mozzarella.
Mystery-Machine··on The best place to drink is the emptiest bar in the city
Why this doesn't work while drinking tea?
Mystery-Machine··on The Crunchbase Tech Layoffs Tracker
Haha this is probably because in the crippled language called JavaScript array elements are by default sorted by first converting them to strings.
Mystery-Machine··on Google has a secret browser hidden inside the settings
If you (in this case parent) block something (in this case browsing porn sites) on some software (in this case Android device), it most definitely _is_ a security issue if the user (in this case a child) can bypass the restriction you imposed. I don't understand what's not clear there? If your phone is locked with a pin and you pass it to your friend (Stifler) because his mom just called you, he should not in any circumstance, be able to unlock your phone without knowing the pin code. That's the first issue. The second security issue is the possibility of any website calling private internal Android functions for (potentially) setting encryption keys of your device (!!!) You don't consider this a security issue?
Mystery-Machine··on Pink Floyd, 'The Wizard of Oz,' and me
The obvious masterpieces are Another brick in the wall and Wish you were here.

But let's say you don't like those two. Another great whole-life-story-of-a-person song is Time. It sums up a majority of people's lives. You go through your life trying to figure out what you need/want to do in life...and then it's over, you never figured it out. Great introspection song. Makes you ask yourself...

Mystery-Machine··on The EU’s fight for user-replaceable smartphone batteries
This is great because the more expensive phones get, the less likely people will want to replace their 2-year old phone with a new one.

Plus, those new high end features...there have been barely any new features in a smartphone in the last 5+ years (I'm exaggerating a bit of course). Check out Fairphone. That's an interesting project!

Mystery-Machine··on US vendor accused of violating GDPR by reputation-scoring EU citizens
Social score is also not shot put someone's ass. It's calculated based on your criminal record and some other factors. Seems like, as per Wikipedia, it's mostly focused on company social credit scores.

Mystery-Machine··on Ask HN: Rails vs. Next.js vs. other JavaScript/TS back end in 2023
Thanks! That's a good idea for easiest transition. However, what I'd like to see more than seamless transition (of negligent amount of code), is a transition to a fully-featured framework that would allow me to build new complex functionality rapidly.
Mystery-Machine··on About GitHub’s use of your data
If it doesn't explicitly say: we do not use private repos data to train our AI models, I wouldn't even consider assuming any other way than that's exactly what they are doing. They know this is a question everyone wants to know the answer to. Why would they leave any ambiguity? Let me help you answer that: because that's exactly what they are doing.
Mystery-Machine··on Windows NT on 600MHz machine opens apps instantly. What happened?
I guess you never heard of Sublime text?
Mystery-Machine··on Next.js App Router Update
I worked on a couple of Next.js projects and all of them turned into a code mess. I have more than a year of experience with Next.js as a senior developer and I still don't know what this frameworks was built for? Is it for a blog post or a full blown app? It started as a framework for a simple blog, but now it turned into this Frankenstein monster and I despise working with it. This is all the sad side effect of JavaScript ecosystem not having a good backend framework like Ruby on Rails or Django. It's a shit show.
Mystery-Machine··on My 24 year old HP Jornada can do things an iPhone still can't do
You're missing the point. The point is _NOT_ whether _ANYBODY_ would use them, the point is that you should own your device and be able to install any software on it that you want.

...plus I'm sure some people would use it, at least sometimes.

Mystery-Machine··on NPM won't publish packages containing the word keygen
You need to move your phone horizontally in order to scroll. It's a new spacial computing type of scrolling. /jk
Mystery-Machine··on Reddit Strike Has Started
You are right and everyone else is wrong.
Mystery-Machine··on Reddit Strike Has Started
Unexpected communism
Mystery-Machine··on 300ms Faster: Reducing Wikipedia's total blocking time
"Better interactivity" is subjective. You could argue that faster is better. Expanding and collapsing sections can be achieved faster and with zero JavaScript (which also makes it work on browsers with disabled JS) with a hidden input[type="checkbox"]. Aa for the media viewer, it could be a great exercise to try and make it in a similar manner with input[type="checkbox"] for opening/closing media viewer and input[type="radio"] for switching to prev/next image. This one probably requires browsers to support the `:has` CSS selector.

Also, if you want to further speed up your site, just like you said, the fastest way to speed up the site is to delete JavaScript, get rid of jQuery.

Mystery-Machine··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
Oke way to protect user data is to NOT ask/collect data in the first place. What's the need of person's full name and address for? Maybe I'm missing the point, but I see zero reasons to have this data in the first place.
Mystery-Machine··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
Why is it an extortion request and "white hats" if they have successfully found a security issue in your project and reported it to you, without actually exploiting it? Would you rather them not report it to you or even worse, exploit it?
Mystery-Machine··on Venus is not Earth’s closest neighbor (2019) [pdf]
Almost true. Good thinking though. There are exceptions to this rule, so it's more of a guidance than the actual rule. For example you could have two planets orbiting the Sun at the relatively similar distance from the Sun and a small distance from each other.
Mystery-Machine··on Show HN: Open sourcing Harmonic, my Android Hacker News client
Awesome! Been using it for about a year now. (I'm writing this from Harmonic)

There's one functionality of another HN app that I really liked that Harmonic doesn't have - mark topic as visited when I scroll past it in the topic list view. I loved this feature and I really miss it because it allowed me to quickly see all the new topics that I haven't seen before. All the topics that I scrolled past I either visited or are not of my interest.

I'll see if I can add this functionality to the app and a preference for enabling/disabling it.

Thank you so much for building such a beautiful app!

Mystery-Machine··on PrivateGPT
You are right. People get easily offended. But your tone does seem a bit _freaking_ upset. Over what? The fact that someone posted the same link like you did and got more clicks from random users browsing the internet? Is that what upset you? What do you get if you got billions of clicks and upvotes?

They say that people who need external validation don't have their own values and need to seek approval from others...

Mystery-Machine··on D1: Improvements to performance and scalability
"up to 37x faster" is NOT before: 37.81ms, now: 1.82ms

You can't just round down 1.82ms to 1ms.

Mystery-Machine··on Carbon-negative concrete
Transportation can be carbon neutral. So you can remove that from equation. At least there are many ways people are trying to reduce transportation carbon emissions to as close to zero as possible.
Mystery-Machine··on Gpt4free repo given takedown notice by OpenAI
You're right. I stand corrected.
Mystery-Machine··on JavaScript import maps are now supported cross-browser
I'd like to read mor about why it only has theoretical benefits. Do you have any links to share where I can learn more? Thanks!
Mystery-Machine··on Gpt4free repo given takedown notice by OpenAI
The author of the article doesn't know that OpenAI's language model is called GPT-4, that's with s dash. This in turn makes GPT4free seem even closer related to GPT-4, which it isn't. GPT4free existed way before GPT-4 was announced as far as I know. On top of that, GPT is not OpenAI trademark.
Mystery-Machine··on Lithuanian university locks out students again for not using proprietary 2FA
You are wrong, sir. Seems like some of these students use Android ROMs without Google Services...and probably without any proprietary software.
Mystery-Machine··on Bullet Train – Rails-based SaaS framework
I love seeing Bullet Train progress. I've never used it, but I'm super eager to use it if I ever get the chance.

There's one more framework being built on top of Rails and I think worth mentioning - RailsUI: https://railsui.com/
