Mystery-Machine··on Our New AI Website Builder
I believe it is actually Pretty Big Deal™.

No big deal on splitting the community in half? Matt will not go and you will have half the people supporting him, half forking the project. Actually less than half on each side, when you count in the people that will completely leave the ecosystem...

Mystery-Machine··on Claude's Max Plan
Can you elaborate which parts are frustrating to you? It wasn't clear who the email came from just from the subject?
Mystery-Machine··on Show HN: Badgeify – Add Any App to Your Mac Menu Bar
Great app! I'd love to support it through https://setapp.com/
Mystery-Machine··on Brazil's government-run payments system has become dominant
What people outside of Latin America don't realize that "they were missing some documentation" is just not true for companies of the size of Meta. They have the best lawyers in the world and I'm pretty sure they used them to prepare all the documentation for this big launch. "You're missing a document" means: we're just fucking around and not letting you in.
Mystery-Machine··on Brazil's government-run payments system has become dominant
Isn't that what any other payment system and most of the banks around the world are - a foreign company with billions of dollars in charge of payment system in a country.

VISA, Mastercard, HSBC, UnionPay, ICBC, Santander... Or is this all Brazilian technology?

The difference is that Meta is privacy data hoarder, not that it's a foreign company. And it's not "in charge of countries payment system", because that's pretty-much impossible, but "one of the payment systems in the country".

Mystery-Machine··on Show HN: WhatsApp MCP Server
Thank you! I live in Latin America and here WhatsApp group chats are through the roof. I easily receive several hundreds of messages across various group chats. It's not possible nor healthy to read every single message. It would be great if the tool could summarize all the unread messages from the given group chat. I played around a bit with the MCP server and it was having problems to even get the correct group chat. The group chat name could be stored together with the ID in SQLite and, if matched, it should immediately query for messages from that group chat, skipping the need to listing chats and trying to find the correct group chat and, worst of all, failing.
Mystery-Machine··on Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in its water
You see there's a difference between world and Utah/USA. In Utah nearly 100% of the population has access to drinking water.
Mystery-Machine··on 'The tyranny of apps': those without smartphones are unfairly penalised
I don't have a permanent address nor a permanent (mobile) phone number. It's impossible to do so many things without these. I have to use my mother's address and my mother is currently suing me in court, so go figure how much mail reaches me. Without a permanent address, you can't open a bank account, you can't use many government services,... It's a "required" field on many online forms. It's such a pain because they don't need those info to give me the services they offer...
Mystery-Machine··on Why Ruby on Rails still matters
Next.js doesn't even have authorization. What does it have? Server-side rendering? Cool.
Mystery-Machine··on Why Ruby on Rails still matters
I feel for you. I'm a Rails developer and I recently joined a Django project... Django feels so far behind Rails... But everyone has their own preference and opinion...
Mystery-Machine··on US and UK refuse to sign AI safety declaration at summit
The difference is that we're not giving hackers direct access to weapons systems, while on the other hand, militaries are actively trying to use AI to control weapons directly.
Mystery-Machine··on Boring tech is mature, not old
Ruby on Rails is amazing!

Today I successfully ran `pip install -r requirements.txt` in one Python project I cloned from GitHub, I couldn't believe my own eyes. Usually it's at least half an hour trying to figure out how to install dependencies.

In JavaScript ecosystem, installing packages works, but the packages get deprecated within a few months. React and many other frontend frameworks completely change their philosophy and the recommended way of writing code that you need to rewrite your app every 1-2 years or be left behind with deprecated packages.

Mystery-Machine··on Show HN: Orange intelligence, an open source alternative to Apple Intelligence
Careful before installing OS-wide application with a single git commit, from someone with no public GitHub activity.

Speaking of the tool, would be great to be able to trigger the action immediately by pressing a keyboard shortcut.

Mystery-Machine··on 0-click deanonymization attack targeting Signal, Discord, other platforms
Why does CloudFlare return whether it was a cache hit or miss? This information could be hidden/removed. I understand it's not a complete solution of the issue, because cached responses will return much faster than non-cached ones, but it's a step in the right direction.
Mystery-Machine··on Five years of React Native at Shopify
Great to see Hotwire Native here! I was asking myself would it be easier for Shopify to steer back more towards Rails ecosystem technologies. They went React / JavaScript full-throttle. JavaScript ecosystem seems so immature, and changing constantly with a huge maintenance burden. Rails feels really stable and Hotwire, although it's changing, feels stable. Stimulus was announced in 2018 I believe and they didn't have a single paradigm shift comparable to React's hooks, server components, etc.
Mystery-Machine··on Walgreens replaced fridge doors with smart screens. It's now a $200M fiasco
I just got an idea for a great shopping experience. An app on my phone that I can add my groceries list to and it will tell me where in the shop the particular item is located and will automatically keep the tally of what I've put in my cart so far so that I know how much I'm spending and my total shopping time will be much smaller. It could also automatically connect to some cart sensor so that I don't even need to scan each item at the cashier, but I can just pay. Something like Amazon Go, but works.
Mystery-Machine··on Laptop
WTF? Since when is 1000€ laptop considered cheap?! Just because your work laptop costs double, doesn't mean that 1000€ is a cheap laptop.
Mystery-Machine··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
Haha. Thanks for proving my point!
Mystery-Machine··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
Like there's no other way to verify an email address. From a developer perspective, I hate it, because it's yet another functionality that I need to add and support in my app.
Mystery-Machine··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
What's wrong with ever expanding list of TLDs? Is there a security threat or you just don't like it or?
Mystery-Machine··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
You're assuming users read.
Mystery-Machine··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
> What makes them tragic:

> 1. Multiple devices. Who doesn’t use at least a few computers weekly? I don’t have my email on my gaming PC, nor do I have it on my work laptops.

"Who doesn’t use at least a few computers weekly?"

I don't. And many, many other people.

See what I did there? I assumed that everyone's like me, just like you did in your blog post. Without data, both of us are wrong.

----

I'd add that magic links also act as a distraction: you open your email client, and it by default opens your inbox, and you start going through all of those unread emails that you just found in your inbox...

Shopify is a big proponent for magic links because they went all-in on their new "Shop" customer accounts. What a disaster. Branding something with such a generic word as "shop" is terrible and average customer doesn't understand that it's supposed to be a brand name.

Mystery-Machine··on Phase behavior of Cacio and Pepe sauce
Sorry I misunderstood your comment.
Mystery-Machine··on Phase behavior of Cacio and Pepe sauce
Ahhhhhh, I also misunderstood your comment. Yeah, I hear you. Maybe you can keep the starch water in airtight container...not sure. I don't keep starch water for the next time I'll cook pasta. I just use the currently made starch water to create a sauce. Highly recommended! But, as mentioned in the research, wait for the water to cool down a bit. Or make a risottata in a pan. <- also highly recommended if you have a pan big enough.
Mystery-Machine··on Phase behavior of Cacio and Pepe sauce
No, you don't. That's why USA suffers from high obesity rates. You need to eat a small portion that is just enough. You won't starve, trust me.
Mystery-Machine··on Phase behavior of Cacio and Pepe sauce
What? What is gross? Did you ever saw raw meat? It's probably gross. There are also insects walking over your vegetables. Gross.
Mystery-Machine··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
If your problem is that you're rich and have no idea what to do, why not just spice it up and give away _all_ of your money, with no way back? That's too difficult? Well, try it. If you're lost and can't figure out any other option...increase difficulty level in this game and start again. Good luck!
Mystery-Machine··on Ruby 3.4 Highlights
The author also forgot to mention that the new error output doesn't mix ` and ' anymore.

Mystery-Machine··on Apple Vision Pro May Now Be Out of Production
Meanwhile, another Apple-focused publication 9to5Mac, just chose Apple Vision Pro as Apple's product of the year: https://9to5mac.com/2024/12/30/9to5mac-product-of-the-year-a...
Mystery-Machine··on Apple Vision Pro May Now Be Out of Production
I'm...not sure. I know it's not really helpful answer, but I don't want to lie to you or to myself. I'm concerned about the long-term effects of staring at this 5+ hours each day.

Have a look at /r/VisionPro subreddit to find more impressions. The best answer is: it depends. It really bothers some people a lot, others can wear it for hours.

I'd suggest everyone to at least use the free 2-week trial and test it out for themselves. I love how futuristic it feels and all of my friends (no past VR experience) have been completely blown away.
