MrYellowP··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
> It's her life

Clearly it's not. It's the life of those she copies and is influenced by. I strongly doubt any of the people like your sister are actually making actual decisions about their lives.

You absolutely should try getting through to her, because that's in her best long-term interest. She's literally destroying her life.

MrYellowP··on Why fewer people are saying "obese" and "overweight" in America
Mate. It was pure sarcasm. Furthermore ...

> Movements to enforce language usage changes like this are usually well-intentioned and can sometimes have positive impacts.

No. It can never have any positive impacts whatsoever, because enforcing language usage means that you are being forced to speak, thus think, in a specific way.

The correct course of action is changing society and culture back into a society of people who don't give a fuck about words.

A society of sane people who don't have imaginary pain because of words they read, or hear. Emotionally mature people.

There is no positive impact from enforcing speech patterns, ever, and you even considering the possibility makes you an extremely questionable person.

MrYellowP··on Qiling: A true instrumentable binary emulation framework
I don't understand what "emulating executables" means and reading through the text didn't clear that up.

So it's an emulator that emulates whole platforms so one could run windows executables on other platforms, without any required extras? Like having WINE combined with an actual emulator?

I'm confused. Is this a tool for 80s style crackers to write the modern equivalent of trainers?

MrYellowP··on Why fewer people are saying "obese" and "overweight" in America
Did you just assume Joe's gender?

I'll have to report you to the scottish police for HateCrime.

Furthermore, I find your use of "obese" offensive, so I'll report you twice.

MrYellowP··on Full EU chat control proposal attack on digital privacy and encryption
You're funny, thinking it makes a difference in the long run.
MrYellowP··on A16Z blogs are just glorified marketing
People have grown shallow and mindless, not even recognizing that there is no substance behind many of the things they hear or read.

Now some genius might respond with "people have always been like this" and that is likely true, but the scale nowadays is vastly different. The omnipresence/constant exposure is making it worse and, because parents aren't actually raising their kids anymore, there is no entity left to correct all this nonsense in the minds of the next generation.

Or it's being outlawed doing so, of course.

> potentially dangerous

> 2 + 2

You really couldn't come up with an actual example of something that would be dangerous? I'd appreciate that, because I'm not seeing reason to believe that an "output beyond the most likely one" output would end up ever being dangerous, as in, harming someone or putting someone's life at risk.

Thanks.

MrYellowP··on Banning open weight models would be a disaster
> to prevent abuse.

People never grow tired of the ever-repeating excuses to further reduce our freedoms, or to hide criminality, or just insult the already lacking collective IQ.

Think of the children! We need to prevent abuse! Someone's feelings might be hurt! Someone might get harmed! Seeing real breasts might cause trauma!

Or one that's not so often used, but still really effective:

We're just bulldozering this place, because it's so horrible. Instead we turn it into a luxury resort for rich people. People who believe that it's because we're destroy any and all evidence are just conspiracy theorists. (in regards to Epstein's Island)

MrYellowP··on Paint.net
Been using paint.net for years. The only downside it has is mentioning it's name, because people keep going to the completely unrelated "paint.net" website. Super fucking annoying.

Anyhow, the only paint program I've used in years. I consider it to be the modern Deluxe Paint ][. Can't get anyone to use it though, because they're all clueless normies stuck in the belief they need to use PhotoShop for everything.

If that makes no sense to you, consider the insane amount of people who buy an expensive DSLR, because they believe it makes them better photographers. Hint: It doesn't.

MrYellowP··on Pyenv – lets you easily switch between multiple versions of Python
In windows I just use subst to switch python versions. Python always sits on drive P:. Never understood what all the fuzz about this was about. Sure, I have the same package on my disk multiple times, but if I cared about that there'd be easy ways to get around that problem just using OS functionality.

From my perspective, it doesn't come easier than running a batch file to switch between python versions.

MrYellowP··on How Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Helps Neural Networks Compute
Nah, this was all many months ago. You'll have to do the experimenting on your own.
MrYellowP··on On Microsoft, the U.S. Government Must Embrace the Stick
Yes, brainiac, they're people too. Doesn't make them "good" people, sure, but they're people too. Everyone gets born into some fucked up system, brainwashed into believing whatever he needs to believe so he thinks he's the good guy doing the right things.

Once you start dehumanizing, you won't stop dehumanizing. Eventually only people you agree with will be considered "people", and boom, you're a fascist.

MrYellowP··on On Microsoft, the U.S. Government Must Embrace the Stick

MrYellowP··on How Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Helps Neural Networks Compute
I thought this was already obvious.

It's all just about the awareness of contexts. Want to improve it? Simply add a term to the prompt to unlock more considerations. Assuming we've not reached the edge of the context window, every new word "unlocks" new vectors with more context the language models adds to the considerations.

The similarity with how the human brain (seems to) works is so remarkable, it doesn't even make sense not to use it as an analogue for how to better use language models.

When the results (same way of manipulating an LLM as manipulating a human brain ... using the right words) can be achieved the same way, why believe there's a difference?

This is stuff one can learn over time by using/researching 3B models. While most people seem to shun them, some of them are extremely powerfull, like the "old" orca mini 3B. I am still using that one! All they really need is better prompts and that approach works perfectly fine.

The biggest hurdle I've found is the usually small context window of such small models, but there's ways of cheating around that without sacrificing too much of the quality using small rope extension, summarizing text, adding context words or leaving out letters of words in the prompt, virtually increasing the size of the context window.

If you want to improve the results of your language model, you should become a mentalist/con-man/magician/social engineer. It sounds weird, but it works!

MrYellowP··on Nvidia founder tells Stanford students their high expectations is a hindrance
I guess at least some people realize how insulting you are.

"Luck" is often a reason given by losers. It's the argument that shifts blame away from their own poor, often stupid decisions. It's used by losers when it comes to starting and running businesses, just like it's used by losers who failed to buy-in on cryptos or stocks when they were low.

"Oh, your business actually took off? You got lucky!"

"Oh so btc hit 69k? You got lucky."

They talk as if they had any clue whatsoever (because to make the assessment you need to understand the matter at hand), but if that was the case, they'd be amongst the actually objectively successfull people.

So ... yeah, right. I didn't make the right decisions at the right time to make sure [project] works out, after doing lots of research. No, I just got lucky. I didn't put hard work into [my project], I just got lucky.

Fuck. You.

It's not luck. No. It's simply not being a clueless loser. It's "putting hard work into reaching your goal". It's "not giving up". It's "standing your ground against the losers who want you to fail".

If these people you're mentioning, were so smart, they'd be rich.

Now take a good fucking guess why they're not.

> Someone who accepts the 'risk' of certain death on the mission doesn't seem to me to be the sort of person you want as your companion on a dangerous voyage.

That is EXACTLY the person I want around, because I know they can be relied on even in dangerous situations. You, on the other hand, who thinks that someone who does not fear death would be a bad companion on such a mission, would likely piss himself in face of actual danger.

Someone who's afraid of death on a suicide mission is a danger to the mission and, thus, to myself. When you want to found a colony, you need strong men and smart men, best when each man covers both.

You definitely just want nerds, scientists, doctors and technicians, because they get the shit done.

This isn't a hollywood movie.

MrYellowP··on Insurance Buys the Wheelchair, but Not the App to Run It
A fucking app for a fucking wheelchair. When will people realize that this is just a slow boil towards digital slavery? Anyone hoping for politicians/governments to protect us from this, when politicians/governments are likely one of the greatest beneficiaries of such digital slavery, is just dumb.

Once everything requires an app, a press of a button ends your life.

> the real mystery is how a single guy working alone could come up with all this in just a few days of casually doing an online challenge with a T-shirt and a coffee mug as a reward.

Why is that a mystery? There's still people out there who actually know how to program a CPU and actually understand what they're doing. The real mystery is the lack of deeper understanding of most people who call themselves programmers, combined with the fact that they don't appear to be knowing that they're seriously lacking.

Worth mentioning in case an alcoholic reads this and thinks it's a good idea to try:

It is, in fact, a really bad idea, because it can kill you.

I don't know how to pick a good link, so simply search "alcohol cold turkey lethal" and pick any of the non-blog links you can find. There's plenty.
