MrVitaliy··on Introduction to Microsoft To-Do
My Documents, My Downloads, My Computer... and now My Day.
MrVitaliy··on Ubuntu switches to Gnome desktop and gives up smartphone hopes
> Other Ubuntu desktop-related efforts, such as the Mir display server, are also presumed to be coming to an end now. Wayland, another open-source display server, will probably replace it in future Ubuntu releases.

Anyone can shed more light on why Mir efforts are coming to an end?

MrVitaliy··on Google AMP Cache, AMP Lite, and the Need for Speed
I'm on iOS 10.2 also. Searching for something like "site:reddit.com casserole" gives a couple of AMP results. Clicking them just shows google loading circle thingy indefinitely, the page never opens.
MrVitaliy··on Google AMP Cache, AMP Lite, and the Need for Speed
I'm against AMP simply because it doesn't work with Safari on iOS. In fact, I switched to DuckDuckGo as a default search engine because less accurate search is still better than a list of accurate results that simply don't open.
MrVitaliy··on “Reclaim Windows 10” Powershell Script
Fair enough. From what I recall, the traffic was going to telemetry servers not time sync. Next time I play with Windows I'll holdon to the capture logs for proof.

I think the other side effect from all those regedit hacks was issues with Windows updates. In the end, my machine got stuck at installing October patches, rebooting then failing at 99% applying the patch, rebooting again, rolling back the patch, rebooting, trying to install the patch again. The non-stop CPU usage and reboots made me quit Windows for awhile.

MrVitaliy··on “Reclaim Windows 10” Powershell Script
The only thing I didn't do is to block MS servers in System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file. This is useless in my opinion, MS can always change them or add new ones.
MrVitaliy··on “Reclaim Windows 10” Powershell Script
That's not true. Install and run wireshark then dial all you want, there will always be traffic every other minute or so to one of Redmond's servers from just idling.
MrVitaliy··on Ubiquiti all the things: How I fixed my dodgy Wi-Fi
Have you looked at Xclaim offerings? It's ruckus hardware but less enterprisy.
MrVitaliy··on Ask HN: Best current model routers for OpenWRT, DD-WRT, Tomato, etc.?
I recommend buying a simple Access Point (AP) but with enterprisy components, like xclaim xi-3, and treat it as a stupid radio device while running layer 3 services with DHCP, firewall, etc on a separate device (or a vm) with pfSense. This way if you have problems with radio signal, you can just replace or buy a different brand AP without changing anything on your network stack.
MrVitaliy··on The Alternate Universe of Soviet Arcade Games
A better site where you can actually play a few -- www.15kop.ru/en/
MrVitaliy··on My data is bigger than your data
Assuming MS is dead, 60PB of data is what google might mine on you for creating an empty google doc.
MrVitaliy··on Cray CS-Storm Delivers High-Performance Computing In Million-Dollar Package
from the article "250 Teraflops per rack" and "a single NVIDIA Tesla K40 chip costs around $4,000. ... If you have four fully loaded racks, that’s over 700 chips. We’re talking some serious power for serious cash." so that's about 3m for 1PFlop
MrVitaliy··on Why is Netflix Buffering? Dispelling the Congestion Myth
Not to be devils advocate, but if I have 75mbps pipe at home and some internet server is on 1mbps, I'll still be buffering because of the server connection not mine. Right?
MrVitaliy··on Apple's Cyclone Microarchitecture Detailed
I doubt all 105k Intel employees are hardware engineers. Half of them are probably sales.
MrVitaliy··on Ukraine crisis: Parliament abolishes anti-protest law
People who lived and remember holodomor are no longer alive. The people who voted for Yanukovich grew up in the 70's and 80' - at the peak of communism civilization.
MrVitaliy··on As the Mac Turns 30, Apple Ponders ‘Post-PC’ Era
Yes
MrVitaliy··on After a year of struggling, my startup is now open source
Why not distribute a vm image with all your stack and then just update the image with new features/fixes?
MrVitaliy··on Comcast Will Spend Millions on Khan Academy for Low-Income Broadband Adoption
Really bad customer service and overpriced internet for 90% of their customers, to subsidize a small, selected segment of new "low-income" customers. How much lower can they go as a company?
MrVitaliy··on An Open Source Phone That’s Completely Unlocked, Hardware Too
I really, really want a physical keyboard.
MrVitaliy··on Four days’ charge on an Android
S2 is at least 2 years old. Whatever battery (1650 mAh) it came with is probably due to be replaced anyway.

Just get an extended battery such as Qcell [http://www.amazon.com/QCell-Samsung-SGH-i777-Extended-Compat...] (a whooping 3600 mAh!) and have same 4 days charge with all the updates/gps/bluetooth/etc enabled, all the time.

MrVitaliy··on Children are suffering a severe deficit of play
It's virtually impossible to correlate decrease in "play time" and increase in suicide rates apart from his anecdotal evidence.

Just because kids don't play the same way you did when you grew up doesn't necessarily mean they're doing it wrong.

Tomorrow there will be a study suggesting video games are a better intellectual stimuli for growing up and yield lower rates of accidental death in children.

MrVitaliy··on Unsupervised joke generation from big data
I enjoyed their creative abbreviation of terms part-of-speech (POS), local log-likelihood (LOL) and Rank of likelihood (ROFL)!
MrVitaliy··on The Chromebook Pixel
MBAir is best dev laptop I ever had. Its super light, plenty of power and space for most app development and within reach price wise. Also, I suggest you look up Linus's rant about how he loves Mac book air and SSD for kernel development.
MrVitaliy··on How much is Stairway To Heaven worth?
It's like being responsible for some major development in iPhone5 at Apple and then going to a store and paying for all the marketing, productions costs by actually buying one.
MrVitaliy··on Funding agencies urged to check for duplicate grants
... and I was hoping it's an article about public funded research, the results of which are sold to public again, via fancy schmancy journals subscriptions.
MrVitaliy··on Funding agencies urged to check for duplicate grants
Nice. Wish I was as good at grant writing as Steven McIntire.
MrVitaliy··on Math notes to take you from one year of college calculus to grad student level
Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus by Ross

IMHO very easy, introductory book on proofs and basic analysis. It's not a novel, you will need some effort to think through exercises.

Getting through this book is like unlocking GODMODE on the first 2 years of college math courses (Calculus mostly).

MrVitaliy··on We Need More Operating Systems
Have you seen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroC/OS-II ?
MrVitaliy··on Bankofamerica.com is down
It's actually not that surprising. Christmas week is their busiest time of the year in terms of transactions traffic.
MrVitaliy··on Special Purpose Linux Distributions
Open Media Vault[1] a Debian based NAS OS. Although Synology's DSM[2] is also linux based it doesn't appear to be as free
