MrThoughtful··on Goodbye Google
Why do you object to the term "species"?

It seems pretty capable of producing variations of itself. If these variations improve over time and roam earth - what is in your definition of "species" that is not met?

MrThoughtful··on Goodbye Google
Isn't AI just the next step in the history of evolution?

I have the feeling it is inevitable that a new species will take over Earth. Just as humans took over a hundred thousand years ago. Now a species even more capable of thinking is coming up.

Thinking a million times faster. Knowing a million times more. Able to wrap its head around a million times more aspects at the same time.

A strong effort to slow it down might slow it down a bit. But does that really make a difference? It's not like we can "brace" ourselves from what is coming. Would the apes have been able to prepare for the arrival of humans if they had had 5 more years?

MrThoughtful··on Gambling with our lives: AI researcher quits Anthropic with warning about safety
Why would AI wipe us out?

We have not wiped out apes, ants, and most other species.

We even have discussions about how to actively save them from extinction.

MrThoughtful··on AI singer now occupies eleven spots on iTunes singles chart
I actually can relate to AI music better than to music made by humans.

I always feel some jealousy when listening to rockstars. Because they get all the action and I get so little. They see the world, are desired by all the beautiful women, earn a ton of money and don't have to work a boring job.

With AI music, I know it is just some lonely GPU in a cold, dark datacenter somewhere. Crunching numbers. Just like I do.

MrThoughtful··on Launch HN: Propolis (YC X25) – Browser agents that QA your web app autonomously
When running a test all I see is:

    Error loading video
    Please try refreshing the page
No matter how often I refresh, that is all I get.

Maybe you need more QA?

When I open my browser console, I see this:

    Capturing error: Error: WHEP request failed: 500 - {"message":"\"message\" is required!","error":"Server Error"}
MrThoughtful··on Female spies are waging 'sex warfare' to steal Silicon Valley secrets
Apart from the "warfare" aspect, it is an interesting question whether the combination of "The man is attractive because of money" and "The woman is attractive because of her looks" can work.

When I look at instances in my social circle, it seems like it doesn't really work. The relationships typically seem to suffer from a lack of mutual interests. The woman's beauty quickly dwindles as time passes. And the woman feels like she is missing out on a "real life" because all she does is be at the side of the man, instead of building her own career. The attraction of the man seems to dwindle quickly too. I know a few such couples, where the man told me that their sex life is dead, even though he wished it were different.

What that tells me is that to work on your attractiveness, working on your career is not the way to go.

MrThoughtful··on The Rapper 50 Cent, Adjusted for Inflation
From 1994 to now, it only goes from 50 to 109?

That looks like the "inflation" the government wants you to believe in.

Name one thing that only doubled in price over the last 30 years.

Even gold (which has its own inflation) went up in price 10 fold.

MrThoughtful··on Apple's Liquid Glass is prep work for AR interfaces, not just a design refresh
Funny, in the comparison image the article shows for the 3 design styles - Skeuomorphic, Flat, Liquid Glass - the Skeuomorphic one looks absolutely best to me:

https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6...

The items look so much more tangible, and the text is more readable. Everything is easy to grok visually. The flat design looks way more confusing. And the liquid glass one looks even worse.

MrThoughtful··on Chatterbox TTS
How do you set the voice?

On the Huggingface demo, there seems to be no option for it.

It has a female voice. Any way to set it to a male voice?

MrThoughtful··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
Can you link to that comment? I don't see a mention of "Claude" anywhere in this thread. Also nobody here showed they were able to "do this" yet.
MrThoughtful··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
As I said in my original comment that started this thread, I don't use any server side tech. So there is no "npm package". I am only using a browser.
MrThoughtful··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
I have tried that a bunch of times and a bunch of ways and did not get ffmpeg to work.

It might have to do with these two strange comments at the top:

    // import { FFmpeg } from '@ffmpeg/ffmpeg';
    // import { fetchFile, toBlobURL } from '@ffmpeg/util';
The rest of the code seems to assume "FFmpeg", "fetchFile" and "toBlobUrl" are somehow magically available. Neither me nor any LLM have yet managed to get these into existance.
MrThoughtful··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
He said it is a matter of copy+paste, not work.

I don't think so as I did not get it to run. And if he really can accomplish it with copy+paste, why wouldn't he demonstrate it?

MrThoughtful··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
If there is a "copy and paste" way to get that to run in the browser, can you copy and paste it to a jsfiddle and post the link to the fiddle here?
MrThoughtful··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
I think there is some kind of misunderstanding here.

You say "an environment with React". My environment is the browser.

I don't know how one is supposed to run that nameless function on that page. What I am looking for is a simple, complete example in HTML that can run standalone when opened in the browser. Without any server side processing involved.

MrThoughtful··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
Can you put it on jsfiddle or some other codebin? I would love to see it.
MrThoughtful··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
The problem is that they don't provide the full code that can run in the browser. I have not managed to get the function they show in the first example to run in the browser.
MrThoughtful··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
I know there are JavaScript ports of FFmpeg and I would love to use them. But so far, I never got it working. I tried it with AI and this prompt:

Make a simple example of speeding up an mp4
video in the browser using a version of ffmpeg
that runs in the browser. Don't use any server
side tech like node. Make it a single html file.
But so far every LLM I tried failed to come up with a working solution.
MrThoughtful··on Fly To Podman: a script that will help you to migrate from Docker
Where does it pull the Debian image from?

I would think the Docker infrastructure is financed by Docker Inc as a marketing tool for their paid services? Are they ok when other software utilizes it?

MrThoughtful··on Fly To Podman: a script that will help you to migrate from Docker
I never tried Podman. I guess the benefit is that it runs on demand and not as a always on demon?

How does one install podman on Debian and how does one get a Debian image to run inside podman?

MrThoughtful··on Making the Web Boring Again
From my perspective, the web is fine from a technological standpoint.

Anybody can easily put text, images, video, audio online.

Finding something that is interesting is the hard part for me.

I would like to see examples of individuals putting out interesting content.

I mean apart from entertainment. Not stuff that is just funny or beautiful or thrilling.

Is there any blogger, tweeter, activitipubber, blueskyer, nostrerer or whatever out there, where you guys think "Damn what they are doing is cool and interesting. I learn something from it for my life. I can't wait for the next update!"?

MrThoughtful··on Web components are okay
Is there really ever a use case for that?

When do you want part of your page to have different fonts, colors, everything from the rest of the page?

MrThoughtful··on Web components are okay
I have been following the web components discussion for years now and just don't see what I can do with them that makes my life as a fullstack developer better.

All the examples I have seen use them to template some data into html. I can do that with handlebars already.

Am I missing someting?

MrThoughtful··on Everything you need to know about Python 3.13 – JIT and GIL went up the hill
Removing the GIL sounds like it will make typical Python programs slower and will introduce a lot of complexity?

What is the real world benefit we will get in return?

In the rare case where I need to max out more than one CPU core, I usually implement that by having the OS run multiple instances of my program and put a bit of parallelization logic into the program itself. Like in the mandelbrot example the author gives, I would simply tell each instance of the program which part of the image it will calculate.

MrThoughtful··on Malaysia started mandating ISPs to redirect DNS queries to local servers
Do FireFox, Chrome and Safari still use unencrypted channels for DNS queries?

What is the state of DNS over HTTPS?

MrThoughtful··on A Jenga tower about to collapse: Software erosion is happening all around us

the average developer spends 42% of their
    work week on maintenance
Indeed, I see that happening all around me when I watch how my friends build their startups. The first few months they are productive, and then they sink deeper and deeper into the quicksand of catching up with changes in their stack.

So far, I have done a somewhat good job of avoiding that. And I have a keen eye on avoiding it for the future.

I think a good stack to use is:

    OS: Debian
    DB: SQLite
    Webserver: Apache
    Backend Language: Python
    Backend Library: Django
Frontend: HTML + CSS + Javascript
    Frontend library: Handlebars
And no other dependencies.

I called Django a "library" instead of a framework, because I do not create projects via "django-admin startproject myproject" but rather just do "import django" in the files that make use of Django functionality.

In the frontend, the only thing I use a library for is templating content that is dynamically updated on the client. Handlebars does it in a sane way.

This way, I expect that my stack is stable enough for me to keep all projects functional for decades to come. With less than a week of maintenance per year.

MrThoughtful··on Just use Postgres
Their reasoning is that some platforms like Heroku do not support SQLite.

Why use those then and not a platform that supports it, like Glitch?

I have used Postgres, MySql etc, but having the project storage in a single file is making things so much easier, I would never ever want to lose that again.
