MrMember··on Ask HN: What tech purchase did you regret even though reviews were great?
I'm a big fan of Garmin watches, it's really impressive what they've built. They're responsive, they have the smart features I want without the bloat I don't want, the battery lasts forever (if I don't use GPS at all it lasts something ridiculous like three weeks, with GPS it's still around a week). And they're so good I don't feel any urge to upgrade to a newer model even though the one I currently have came out in 2019. I bought it "renewed" 2.5 years ago at a significant discount and I could see myself happily using it for at least another 4-5 years.
MrMember··on Google is 'gradually rolling out' option to change your gmail.com address
I have firstinitiallastname and I get A LOT of emails sent to firstinitial.lastname. Someone even used it for their bank account.
MrMember··on Microsoft Copilot AI Comes to LG TVs, and Can't Be Deleted
It's a positive for a nameless middle manager somewhere who can show their boss a graph with a line moving to the right and up with a title like "AI Adoption Across Platforms" and hit their bonus target.
MrMember··on Sick of smart TVs? Here are your best options
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll check them out.
MrMember··on Sick of smart TVs? Here are your best options
Smart TVs are so user hostile now that this doesn't work for me personally anymore. Every TV I've seen recently always tries to get back to the "home" screen so they can funnel you into more ads and/or content that makes them money. If I have the TV set to the HDMI source for my connected HTPC, turn off the TV, and turn it back on again, it will be back on the TV's home screen. If I switch to an HDMI source that isn't currently outputting video it will switch back to the home screen in five seconds. I was at a friend's house over Thanksgiving and when he tried to navigate away from the home screen on his Vizio TV to a different HDMI input he got a confirmation dialog box with an ad embedded in it asking him "are you SURE you want to change inputs?" It's ridiculous.

For now I spend the extra money for "digital display" TVs that are just dumb input for HDMI devices but I fear that someday that option will either disappear or fall significantly behind regular TVs in display technology.

MrMember··on Zohran Mamdani wins the New York mayoral race
They are not independent. Rent control discourages housing development.
MrMember··on Amazon fined $2.5B for using deceptive methods to sign up consumers for Prime
I used Walmart delivery for groceries a fair amount last year and didn't have a single issue. I used it maybe six times this year and there was an issue with the order five of those times. Several times it was delivered to the wrong address. The other times I was missing around half of my order. I was able to get refunds without any issue every time but the experience was so awful I canceled and haven't used it at all the second half of this year.
MrMember··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
YouTube search will also only show you maybe 10 videos relevant to your search terms and then just give you random videos it wants you to watch that have little or nothing to do with your original search.
MrMember··on Windows 10 resists its end: usage share climbs while Windows 11's falls
They already do that. I've gotten a few full screen "notifications" on Windows 10 telling me to upgrade to 11 with options to "Accept" or "Ask Me Later."
MrMember··on AI is ummasking ICE officers. Can Washington do anything about it?
>Skinner acknowledged that the technology is flawed, and he said that about that 60 percent of the AI-generated results and facial recognition searches lead to wrong matches on social media profiles. He says a group of volunteers verifies them through another process before posting any names online.

This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. 60 percent of the output is garbage and leads to an innocent person being "identified" but don't worry the unpaid volunteers have a "process" to make sure nobody innocent is targeted!

MrMember··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
My HTPC runs Linux and when I had Amazon Prime I tried to stream a live event and it wouldn't let me stream it at all. I don't have Prime anymore.
MrMember··on Bank forced to rehire workers after lying about chatbot productivity, union says
Every time I've returned something to Amazon it was because of their fuck up (sadly a lot more common lately). They send me the completely wrong item, the item arrives broken, etc.
MrMember··on Mark Zuckerberg freezes AI hiring amid bubble fears
I hate pretty much everything about Facebook but Zuckerberg has been wildly successful as CEO of a publicly traded company. The market clearly has confidence in his leadership ability, he effectively has had sole executive control of Facebook since it started and it's done very well for like 20 years now.
MrMember··on A statistical analysis of Rotten Tomatoes
Death of Stalin is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It's been a long time since I laughed so hard at a movie or TV show.
MrMember··on Comparing baseball greats across eras, who comes out on top?
Randy Johnson had an absolutely insane career. He basically had two hall of fame careers, one before age 35 and one 35 and after. Any one of those alone would have been enough to get him into the hall of fame, taken together makes him one of the best pitchers of all time.
MrMember··on The US Relies on 51 Forty-five-year-old ships to Transport its Military Overseas [video]
The B-52 will likely reach a century of service. It's really good at what it was designed to do and any wholesale replacement would be extremely expensive for not a lot of benefit.
MrMember··on Online sports betting: As you do well, they cut you off
I'm in favor of legal sports betting but there needs to a serious crackdown on advertising during events and league partnerships. The UFC has an official sportsbook partner. In the UK a book sponsors the second tier of soccer. It's out of control.
MrMember··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
Roman dictators have always fascinated me. It worked (for a while at least) because both sides agreed it was necessary and temporary. The people who appointed the dictator knew extreme measures were needed to navigate them through some crisis. The dictator knew if they tried to hold on to power longer than was necessary they would simply be removed or killed, their supreme power only extended through the crisis in which they were needed.
MrMember··on Ask HN: Would you fund Mozilla to become independent of Google?
If there was a way to financially contribute to development of the browser and only development of the browser I would. Probably like $5 a month.
MrMember··on Ask HN: Former devs who can't get a job, what did you end up doing for work?
US Aviation Academy. I've read that the quality of instruction and level of learning is pretty low and requires a lot of self study but I'd just be using it as a vehicle to get the A&P certifications as quickly as possible.
MrMember··on Ask HN: Former devs who can't get a job, what did you end up doing for work?
I'm contemplating becoming an aircraft mechanic. I've always loved planes and I still sometimes wish I had chosen to become a commercial pilot. There's a "crash course" school near me that's designed to get you the FAA A&P certifications in eight months. I'd be taking a significant pay cut at the beginning but after 5ish years I'd be back up about to where I am now.
MrMember··on I ate and reviewed every snack in our office kitchen
Fruits have sugar but unless you're on a diet that heavily restricts sugar intake it's not an alarming amount. A normal sized apple for example is larger by volume than a Snickers bar but has 1/4 the calories and half the sugar.
MrMember··on Bluesky's science takeover: 70% of Nature poll respondents use platform
Some blocklist maintainers are very trigger happy. You may have been added for following the "wrong" person or following someone who follows the "wrong" person.

MrMember··on Ads chew through half of mobile data
The other day I was on a page with an autoplaying video. When I started scrolling it popped out into the corner so I closed it, and there was another autoplaying video underneath it. I've never seen anything like that and I just had to kind of look at it in amazement.
MrMember··on I automated my job application process
>If you can't stand out from an LLM then why can't it do your job?

My job isn't writing resumes and cover letters.

> Also, not using LLMs might be a red flag. I wouldn't want a dev that is not open to this technology...

lmao this is exactly the issue. There are hiring managers in here saying they're trying to filter out people using LLMs in applications and you're telling me to use LLMs.

MrMember··on I automated my job application process
I'm seeing a lot of back in forth in the comments between hiring managers and employees discussing who is more responsible for the current situation, but from the perspective of someone looking for a job what should I be doing?

I've been pretty aggressively looking for a job for the past six months or so. I have 10+ years of professional software dev experience so I've mostly been looking at senior dev positions. I haven't used LLMs at all in my resume, cover letters, etc. I only apply to jobs that I believe I meet the requirements for and that I would likely accept if given an offer. How do I signal that 1) I am a real person 2) I really do have the job experience and skills listed on my resume, and 3) I really am interested in the specific job I'm applying for. Because doing this my hit rate has been abysmal. I've had maybe 10-12 initial phone screens (never an issue, I easily make it past these). Past that I've had maybe 3-4 interviews that get into the later rounds. From that I've had zero offers.

So why should I keep doing what I'm doing when it's getting me nowhere? Why shouldn't I switch to an automated "shotgun" approach that applies me to as many jobs as possible to which I vaguely fit the requirements? The only other way I've seen suggested to signal that I'm a real person with real experience is to know someone in the company who can vouch for me (which I almost never do).

MrMember··on Casual Viewing – Why Netflix looks like that
Also an incredible show but for very different reasons.
MrMember··on Police bust pirate streaming service making €250M per month
There was a brief period of time where Netflix was the absolute peak of online streaming. Most of the major studios were putting their movies and shows there, Netflix was starting to dip their toes in creating original high quality content, and all of it was available for a reasonable monthly price.

Now when I want to watch something I don't even bother trying to figure out what service it's on (if any), I just grab a torrent. Managing subscriptions for a dozen different services and trying to keep track of what I'm subscribed to and why is laughable when it's so easy to get it for free.
