MrMcDowall··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
I'm a solo dev working on what started out as an interstitial journalling tool, but is now morphed into a local first native set of tools for thinking and writing. Tools for the end of the internet, you might say.

Current version is over at https://owl.so but the local first native app (Owl/2) is about to hit beta real soon.

MrMcDowall··on Ask HN: How to pivot to a Machine Learning engineer?
Lol like ordinary programmers have a such a great ethical reputation... Cambridge Analytica, Ad Platforms, and on and on.
MrMcDowall··on Making Go telemetry opt-in is a mistake
There's a lot of 'just' handwaving here about compiling without telemetry. We just need to look as far as VSCode, which is riddled with unremovable telemetry, and the entire project of VSCodium which has to exist to provide telemetry free versions, and still cannot remove all of it. You're discounting the complete waste of human time and effort required to undo something that should simply not exist in the first place.

In terms of the open GH issues, people are pretty vocal about which ones they think are most important to fix, as is the case for most popular projects. It's simply not true that the Go team have no way of knowing which of the open issues are most important to the community.

MrMcDowall··on Ask HN: How to work with people who push back forcefully?
Do you have source on item #2? I've been looking for some to back this point, but can't find any.
MrMcDowall··on Ask HN: Is Ruby on rails worth it to learn in 2022?
The last time I looked into the state of the art when writing web apps in Clojure, people were hand crafting SQL statements in the data layer, and the community seemed fine with this. Have things improved?
MrMcDowall··on Rails 6 with Webpacker 6, Tailwind 2 with JIT, Postcss 8 and some default setup
Yeah, Elixir is great, but zealots keep acting like it's happening, and it is totally not happening.
MrMcDowall··on Serenity notes: E2E encrypted notes
There's Obsidian for those that want their notes to stay local, or at the very least decide if you want your information flying around the Internet: http://obsidian.md/
MrMcDowall··on Engineer Converts Used Van into Mobile Laundromat, Offers Free Loads to Homeless
In the video below, he mentions they are gas powered driers.
MrMcDowall··on Tony Hsieh has died
The desire to know is usually in proportion to the unexpectedness. Perhaps its an evolutionary curiosity (Avoid how they died)?
MrMcDowall··on Sam Altman: “YC not going to fire someone over support of a candidate”
Simplify!
MrMcDowall··on Off the Grid, but Still Online
Uggh I know exactly what you mean - I happened to see folks mentioning the rule change on the Canada visa forum and scrambled my application together just in time, and it was AoR the day before the change.

That really sucks man!

MrMcDowall··on Off the Grid, but Still Online
High five! I've just done the same and just passed the citizenship test. Canada is awesome.
MrMcDowall··on Off the Grid, but Still Online
Lots of rural communities, like the one I live in, have a central mail box location where we go to collect our mail. That one location services about 50 properties. FedEx or any courier deliver to the local post office in town. It all works quite well, and it's not so bad having to go out to get your mail, since you usually need other things from town too.
MrMcDowall··on Imogen Heap releases single on Ethereum-based Mycelia
I can see how you would naively assume that it's something to do with some CSS issue, but it's nothing to do with CSS. We're trying to use a brand new technology for the first time using libraries that have just been written, and newsflash not all browsers behave the same way.

The browser block is up while we figure out where the cracks are during _this prototype_.

MrMcDowall··on Show HN: It's been 141 days but I revived dresssed.com
I'm the developer behind the site and themes. Would love to hear what your thoughts and advice are!
MrMcDowall··on Show HN: Relaunching Dresssed.com – Premium Rails Themes
Indeed!
MrMcDowall··on Show HN: Relaunching Dresssed.com – Premium Rails Themes
Relaunched in the sense that the site used to belong to Marc-Andre Cournouyer and he launched it in 2012, and it was all based on Twitter Bootstrap 2.

We're the new owners and have invested a huge amount of time updating that original theme, and starting new themes!

Thanks for the tip, that's a good catch.

MrMcDowall··on What the hell is Ember.K?
Thanks for reminding me about these.
MrMcDowall··on Why Nobody Should Use Rails
It's 2013 and we're still seeing this Medieval theatre.
MrMcDowall··on Why I left Heroku, and notes on my new AWS setup
Leanpub.
MrMcDowall··on Show HN: Feedback app
Glad to see you're still alive Moeed!
MrMcDowall··on You Should Launch with Less
Hey Nick, it's John here :P

Neither am I, and the Customers aren't choosing the price here. They are signalling how much they think they would pay - there's nothing that guarantees they'll get it for that price.

I didn't choose that page layout - it's what Leanpub provides for an unpublished book. I only consider the price that customers signal as an interesting reflection on how much value the book title and subtitle convey on first reading.

MrMcDowall··on You Should Launch with Less
That's great feedback - thanks for taking the time!
MrMcDowall··on You Should Launch with Less
Hello! I'm the author of this book - if you'd like to be in it just tweet me @MrMcDowall.
MrMcDowall··on You Should Launch with Less
Programmer pattern matching in action :)
MrMcDowall··on You Should Launch with Less
I'm happy to be open about it: So far 31 people have signed up to be notified and given a price, which is working out as a mean of $20.

Yeah I thought about that too, but the audience I'm going after didn't make that association so readily.

Edit: I opened the page for registration at 4pm EST yesterday (1st May).

MrMcDowall··on You Should Launch with Less
It's not an instruction manual.
MrMcDowall··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (May 2013)
FREELANCER SEEKING WORK - Toronto, remote

I used to be CTO at 500px, and a couple of other local startups until I decided to concentrate on shipping features. I am a full stack web developer with over 10 years in the industry, mainly specializing in Rails (with Javascript/Coffeescript), HTML5, CSS3 and Ember.js. I also specialize in dealing with Scale problems and designing large systems, and team coaching and mentoring. I can dive into any project and be immediately productive, or build something greenfield to get you to MVP.

MrMcDowall··on I Stand With Trolls
Executives shouldn't be trolls. If you're an executive, and you say or do something in public that tangibly affects the market perception in a negative way, you should have known better, and you deserve to be fired.
