MrFantastic··on Robot-assisted surgery associated with longer operating times, higher cost
Is saving 4 hours worth having to wear diapers for the rest of your life?

Would a damp environment increase risk of skin infection down the line?

MrFantastic··on Ask HN: Why is Bitcoin's value rising so fast?
Any asset that goes up 500% in a year gets a lot of press as people fear "missing out" on a "sure thing". It's a positive feedback loop.

I don't see the intrinsic value of BTC although I think Blockchain is a great invention.

MrFantastic··on 'Big Void' Identified in Khufu's Great Pyramid at Giza
I don't think that a 12 inch hole drilled big enough for a drone in a section of the pyramid that is protected from the weather and not visible to the public is "Destroying a monument".

Do you think that the DNA test of King Tut was also destruction?

MrFantastic··on Why Timber Towers Are on the Rise in France
Concrete buildings can last for centuries. There are few wood buildings that last that long.

I would think something like aerocrete would also provide superior insulation.

MrFantastic··on Why Amsterdam Works So Well for Bikes
It also helps that Amsterdam is flat and the population density is high.
MrFantastic··on ESPN Can’t Afford Monday Night Football Any More
Monday Night Football matchups are usually unimportant and/or lobsided.
MrFantastic··on Bitcoin just passed $5,000
Blockchain has real promise, but Is anyone using Bitcoin for anything other than speculation?
MrFantastic··on After the check is gone: The underground economy of rural America
West Virginia border is 106 miles from Washington DC. One of the poorest areas of the country is next door to the Nations Capital, that makes good press.
MrFantastic··on How Emotional Labor is Dragging Down Gender Equality
This reminds me of my ex. I would make the bed because she never did it.

She would complain that I didn't make the top sheet tight enough.

My response was if you want the sheets tighter, make the bed yourself.

It's childish to expect someone else to care about something as much as you do.

Did the author make her expectations clear or was she expecting her husband to read her mind?

It sounds like she was expecting her husband to care about the same things she did.

MrFantastic··on How Big Banks Became Our Masters
Poor, out-of-work factory workers voting for a billionaire shyster.
MrFantastic··on How Big Banks Became Our Masters
Most likely, Debt preceeded money.

e.g. I give you seed and you give me a portion of your crops for X growing seasons.

MrFantastic··on Ask HN: Sell my startup for $14M because I can't raise $2M?
You are essentially paying your people to become your confidant and to protect your image.

That's worth a lot to a billionaire.

A pilot has your life in their hands. Smaller jets can be very 'shifty' when landing which is scary. Also you want a pilot that can land anywhere.

MrFantastic··on Ask HN: Sell my startup for $14M because I can't raise $2M?
Sell at $14MM and offer to be an advisor for a small piece of equity in the sold company after you sell.
MrFantastic··on Ask HN: Sell my startup for $14M because I can't raise $2M?
... and may be your coffin.
MrFantastic··on Bitcoin Makes Even Smart People Feel Dumb
My problem with most of the cryptocurrencies is that they are so thinly traded (150k average) and many buyer naive that prices could be easily manipulated by professional Currency Traders or Hedge funds.

It not normal for prices to fluctuate up and down 50% so quickly.

MrFantastic··on 'That Fentanyl – That's Death': A Story of Recovery in Baltimore
Hand and facial surgery is disturbing because we identify with those regions so much.
MrFantastic··on 'That Fentanyl – That's Death': A Story of Recovery in Baltimore
I don't think people can feel brain surgery.
MrFantastic··on Ravens can plan for future as well as 4-year-old children can
TIL ravens are smarter than politicians and CEOs.
MrFantastic··on Why Can’t Americans Get a Raise?
Costs are contained by limiting treatment options and have a limited formulary.

e.g. If you don't have the money a 75 y.o. doesn't get a heart transplant.

IMO if you don't have the money you aren't entitled to the best care but this discussion needs to happen and be debated.

Our current system encourages good money to be spent on lost causes.

MrFantastic··on Why Can’t Americans Get a Raise?
Are temporary field hands the future of the US economy?

Many construction workers can't move to high demand areas because they are financially locked into the areas they currently live.

Most planes could function with 1 pilot due to automation but regulations won't allow it.

MrFantastic··on Why Can’t Americans Get a Raise?
When healthcare premiums are rising double digits annually, there is no money to increase salary.

We have to decide a basic level of healthcare every Citizen is entitled too and if you want more, the individual pays for it.

Cutting taxes on the already wealthy isn't a stimulus, but putting $18k ( avg annual HC premium ) back into pockets the middles classes will stimulate the economy because they will spend it all.

Cutting taxes on the wealthy just slows the Velocity of Money.

MrFantastic··on Price manipulation in the Bitcoin ecosystem
The volume is so slow and most of the market is very naive that tends toward greed. And bitcoin gets a lot of news. 3 weeks ago I was in a bar and 3 groups of people were talking about buying it.

Bitcoin seems the perfect market for someone with deep pockets to manipulate.

MrFantastic··on C.S. Lewis's Greatest Fiction: Telling Kids They’d Like Turkish Delight (2015)
A Starburst candy is a 10 on the sweetness scale for me.
MrFantastic··on U.S. Pays Farmers Billions to Save Soil, But It's Blowing Away
If that's the case then why has the nutritional value of our food decreased as artificial fertilizer has come to dominate the market?
MrFantastic··on Pistol sights
Shooting someone that is running away is murder not self-defense.
MrFantastic··on Pistol sights
It's sad that wanting background checks is seen as anti-gun.

The Conservatives think that HRC was going to their house and take all their guns. That wasn't her position at all.

I agree that everyone should familiarize themselves with guns but for practical self defense purposes a shotgun and a rifle are not that different. A shotgun only spreads about 8inches at a self defense range ( 10m or so ).

If the range is longer than that it's more a skirmish that Self Defense.

.22LR is the most common caliber in homicides. I'd rather have a 9mm, but the best gun is the one you can access when you need it.

MrFantastic··on U.S. Pays Farmers Billions to Save Soil, But It's Blowing Away
Large scale aquaponics would have the same antibiotic problem that farmed fish have.

I'd also be concerned that the produce would lack micro nutrients because the system is artificial.

That said, I think aquaponics will be part of the solution.

MrFantastic··on Bleecker Street’s Swerve from Luxe Shops to Vacant Stores
Many commercial RE contracts require the rents to be paid for set periods regardless of whether the lessee still occupies the site.
MrFantastic··on Ohio Sues 5 Major Drug Companies For 'Fueling Opioid Epidemic'
Why is a hypothetical massive terrorist attack more scary than hypothetically polluting all fresh water than humans need to live?
MrFantastic··on Ohio Sues 5 Major Drug Companies For 'Fueling Opioid Epidemic'
Corporations exist to protect the investors and the executives but they can only be punished monetarily.

This is why CU undermines Democracy.
