MperorM··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
I really have no clue what apple is thinking with regards to the touchbar.

Why should any developer spend time developing sorely lacking features for the touch bar, when they just released the most popular mac without one?

The only way I can make sense of the decision to release the air without a touch bar, is that it must be really expensive to manufacture and they were struggling to hit the $1000 price point.

As a result the touchbar lives in this weird limbo state. Apple themselves clearly are uncertain what they want from it, and it shows. Since its release the touch bar has been left mostly abandoned and it’s been up to third party developers to make it useful.

It can be useful, at least after heavy customization – something a screen lends itself well to. Why isn’t apple doing more to help users customize it?

macOS comes with an application called Automator. Automator is confusing for power and regular users alike and as a result, nobody uses it. Why not rethink Automator completely with the touchbar in mind? Bring the power of programming to regular users with an easily accessible ‘create your own button’ feature that lets users add custom commands accessible from their touchbar?

MperorM··on What Is Mind-Wandering and How You Use It to Your Advantage?
That was my experience with every todo system I have ever implemented.

I finally found a todo system which worked for me, namely writing up every todo in a list. On Sundays I distribute the tasks to different days of my next week day.

If I don't get the task done for a weekday, it's completely fine. I just move it back into the long list, so it gets distributed next sunday.

If I notice a task has been cycled like that a few times, then I delete it, it wasn't important enough for me to overcome the guilt associated with the task.

I'm not sure if the system I came up with was what actually fixed my todo anxiety, but in case it was I figured I would share it.

MperorM··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
if you spend some money one place, you can't spend that money elsewhere as well.

You could argue there's enough money to solve both problems, and a tax on the wealthiest would help accomplish that. that is a view I'm very sympathetic to.

But I think the comment you're responding to is making the first point, rather than the latter.

MperorM··on Police killings more likely in agencies that get military gear, data shows
This was the case for the danish military in Iraq and Afghanistan as well.

The people I feel worst for are the soldiers themselves. You're informed over and over about the rules of engagement, and when you get there none of it applies.

If you don't shoot first, then your next to you friend will die. Obviously you're going to break the rules in that situation, it's what any human would do.

Now you have to live the rest of your life, knowing you broke conventions. You should be tried like the war-criminal you are. Or so it feels.

While I disagreed with the west's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, I have the utmost respect for the soldiers who fought there. They deserve a set of rules can realistically be followed.

MperorM··on 5D chess game where pieces time travel
not at all the same.

I can mate you by having your king in check in a board in the current timeline, while checking your king 6 moves in the past as well.

I can abandon a board where I'm losing, by moving the king to another dimension where it is less threatened.

MperorM··on The Book of Why: The New Science of Cause and Effect [pdf]
Most STEM papers are written with latex, this book likely is too.
MperorM··on TikTok to Sue U.S. over Ban
Free market does not need to be a two way thing to function. If the Chinese have to spend their money on non-US goods, those earning thw profits will be more inclined to spend their money on US goods.

Exports is what you pay for your imports. It's better for US citizens to be able to buy Chinese products even if Chinese citizens can't buy us products. They can pay for it by exporting to other countries from which China buys.

MperorM··on Ask HN: What are some available force multipliers that most people don't know?
For those on macOS this can be set in system preferences -> keyboard -> shortcuts -> mission control.

I highly recommend using multiple desktops with dedicated hotkeys over alt+tab to switch between applications. Much much faster to press fn+cmd+<h, j , k, l> and immediately bring up the application you want than to tab until you find the application you are looking for.

MperorM··on In a warming world, New England’s trees are storing more carbon
Oh Common, the point is just that any individual reducing their meat intake, will reduce total meat consumption less than the amount that individual consumed.

That's hard to argue against.

One counter argument would be that his/her analysis doesn't take into account any other effects of reducing consumption, such as one's friends and family also reducing consumption as direct consequence.

I agree that it requires an enormous amount of focus and work. At least for Starcraft, I don't think most pro's are great because of explicitly min/maxing things.

Rather they are great because they subconsciously pick up on minute details to learn from in every match they watch and play. Ask a top player why they did some maneuver, and you'll often get an answer like: "Because it's good". There really hasn't been that much system 2 thought put into it.

Being great at a video game is mostly about cultivating an instinct that always makes the right decisions.

For what it's worth, I was grandmaster in starcraft and made a decent salary coaching lower rank players during my highschool years, so I feel my opinion carries some weight at least :)

MperorM··on Transport makes up only 6% of the greenhouse gas emissions from food
I originally interpreted the title as 'eating locally has a tiny environmental footprint" which is opposite of the point the article is trying to make.

I'm not sure what the rules about changing a title is, but the article makes an excellent point and it would be a shame if people who don't read the article get it wrong like I did.

MperorM··on Ask HN: Recommend a maths book for a teenager?
During the first year of my undergrad someone introduced me to Gödel, Escher, Bach. I thought it was mind blowing at the time and still find it to be an incredible introduction to formal systems, thinking mathematically and understanding the concept of proofs.

All these concepts are central to higher level mathematics, and are not covered in high school (at least not the Danish one).

I'm was very thankful for that introduction, hopefully they would be as well :)

MperorM··on Google Blew a Ten-Year Lead
That does sound awful!

Thankfully we use Box and regular office at my workplace, so I have not had to experience that side of Drive.

Would it be fair to say Drive is very well suited for small organisations, but has trouble scaling?

MperorM··on Google Blew a Ten-Year Lead
I don't really understand this sentiment, here's how my drive looks:

does your drive look significantly different from this?

MperorM··on The Map Is Not the Territory (2015)
Why would that be incompatible with the map and territory model?

> The second also means that the way we experience the world depends on the kind of creatures we are, and not the way the world is.

Would it be fair to say we all look at both the map and territory wearing different sunglasses?

That seems to capture both sentiments, I feel there's something I'm not getting here.

MperorM··on Have you ever asked yourself “how did research get done before LateX?”
Totally agree with your points. Latex remains the best tool for many tasks.

But none of the things you described, I think latex does particularly well either. Better than Google docs and the likes, sure, but I think it's possible to do better.

I truly think Google Docs could be so much more than it currently is.

They for example built a brilliant speech-to-text feature that is only available on desktop. Mobile is the one place I could imagine using such a feature. Imagine writing your documents with speech while hiking deep in the woods. Feeling the fresh air with a view of a beautiful brook as Google transcribes your thoughts. That's how I want to write!

Why on earth put so much effort into such a brilliant feature, and then have it only be available to users already sitting in front of a keyboard!?

Apologies for the tangent, it was where my mind wanted me to go!

MperorM··on Have you ever asked yourself “how did research get done before LateX?”
I wish I could upvote this a thousand times and then some.

Already in the 80's Jeff Bezos refused to use latex due to its absurd difficulty to use. I can't believe it's been 40 years and there still isn't a better tool to write papers with.

It took me less than an hour to create a Google Docs template that looks roughly as good as a standard Latex document. The reason Latex looks beautiful is due to a set of wisely chosen defaults, nothing more.

Yet the focus of Google Docs clearly isn't scientific papers. I don't imagine it would take more than a few passionate employees at Google to expand Docs to a powerhouse of scientific writing.

Pictures of my template can be found below:

MperorM··on macOS Catalina 10.15.5
Yes, I have reset t2, smc, nvram, even reinstalled the entire operating system. I have the same problem on both 16 inch laptops I've owned (first one was stolen) suggesting it has to do with the software I use.

I am unable to identify a single application as the culprit, unfortunately.

MperorM··on macOS Catalina 10.15.5
Since Catalina I have been getting daily freezes, where the entire operating system locks up. I can still move the cursor around and audio keeps playing as well, but everything else is completely frozen.

Once in a while the freeze lasts so long the computer crashes resulting in a crash report:

Termination Reason: WATCHDOG, [0x1] monitoring timed out for service

Termination Details: WATCHDOG, checkin with service: WindowServer returned not alive with context:

unresponsive work processor(s): WindowServer main thread

I am at my wits end to what can be causing this. Is anyone else experiencing similar freezes?

MperorM··on Ask HN: As a Facebook or Google engineer, do you consider your company evil?
I would like to thank all the wonderful people like you who created such amazing products for me to use. I am sorry to hear that you have experienced mental anguish due to this. From my perspective you should feel pride and accomplishment from having contributed to helping millions of people every day.

I get dozens of questions answered each day through your search engine that before would go unanswered. (my last question was: "how does a digital scale work?")

I get to write beautiful documents, spreadsheets and presentations that I can easily share with colleagues, who in turn, easily can provide feedback and comments inside the documents themselves.

I tracked the length of my last run with only my phone using android and maps, something that otherwise would have been difficult to do.

My family easily collects photos of our holiday together in a single shared space.

These are just the first things that came to mind I used google for in the last week. Whatever evils google do, you do at least as much good as well.

It's absurd to me that you are feeling guilt because of this. I can't tell you what to feel, but people like you have made my life significantly better and I want to express thankfulness for that.

MperorM··on Bill Gates calls for nationwide shutdown
Why should they give something seperate?

Their charity is among the most effective. Should Bill be willing to let people die whom their foundation could have saved just to please those who think it's self-serving?

B&M Gates recognized most charities aren't particularly effective, and that there were few places they could convert their cash to QALY's. They created a foundation which effectively does that and now pour their money into it.

I don't exactly understand what they should have done instead. Settle for a worse charity that would save fewer lives?

MperorM··on Man who stockpiled hand sanitizer donates it all ahead of investigation
Well the (in my opinion flawed) idea is to remove the incentive for buying that much in the first place.

Say what you want, but someone receiving this enormous an amount of social shaming on top of a painful economic loss, sure is going to disincentivise people from pulling similar stunts in the future.

MperorM··on Why some governments appear not to be acting on the Covid-19 threat
If I understand him right he's pointing out freedom of assembly is just as significant a right for Americans as Danish citizens.

I would go a step further and argue it is much more significant to American culture than Danish, and I feel my opinion carries at least some weight given I am a Danish person living in California.

MperorM··on Google recommends all North America employees work from home
If I may ask, what type of work did the remote teams do?

It might be that a lot of disagreement about the viability of WFH is simply due to people having different types of work in mind.

MperorM··on Google recommends all North America employees work from home
Oh yes for sure! I did not mean to suggest WFH is a bad idea under these circumstances.

I'm only trying to argue against a common sentiment here on HN, that working from home is more productive.

My personal beliefs are that a single WFH day a week in most instances might be net-positive for the company.

MperorM··on Caffeine boosts problem-solving ability but not creativity, study indicates

I can't really determine what the right cost/benefit trade-off here. Reading beyond the abstract is rather time consuming and is not something I can afford for every paper.

MperorM··on Swedes rebelling against a cashless society (2018)
As a student who recently spent their savings on a Macbook 16 inch, just to have it stolen shortly after I really would have preferred selling it for cash would not have been an option for the thiefs.

in the same manner, I gladly would have accepted mass surveillance if it meant the thief would actually get caught.

MperorM··on Honeywell says it will soon launch the world’s most powerful quantum computer
As someone who understands little about quantum computing, why is quantum volume not a good measure?

I'd be thankful to better understand better what parts of the complicated system is lost in the measure.
