Mpdreamz··on Ask HN: Which .NET applications might be (better) on Mac/Linux soon?
There has been an alpha of fiddler on mono for some time now: http://fiddler.wikidot.com/mono, rejoice!
Mpdreamz··on EditorConfig
.editorconfig supports domain specific properties: https://github.com/editorconfig/editorconfig/wiki/EditorConf.... Its encouraged that other extensions/tooling take a dependency on .editorconfig to introduce their own configuration.
Mpdreamz··on Full text search in your Data: How you can do better than Elasticsearch
"mixing relevance and popularity is nothing short of impossible in Elasticsearch. Either you sort by relevance or by using a popularity attribute, you cannot mix both."

This is a false statement,

http://www.elasticsearch.org/guide/reference/query-dsl/custo...

This combined with scripts give you unlimited possibilities to alter you score based on whatever you please. The syntax is a bit wonky in the current version perhaps but awesomeness is on the way:

https://github.com/elasticsearch/elasticsearch/issues/3423

"Unfortunately Elasticsearch fuzzy matching does not work out of the box, is complex to customize, and does not provide the ability to highlight prefixes."

There are more ways to catch typo's then fuzzy and levensteins, ngrams for instance. Elasticsearch allows you to do both but yes its true you have to know your way around analyzers/tokenizers and mapping a little bit to get the best results in elasticsearch. If you use the ngrams approach highlighting also works alot better.

"This sorting configuration might seem pretty explicit, but it is in fact quite dangerous as it conflicts with the boost on fields. To better understand the problem, let’s look at the query ‘the rains’:"

Its true sorting trumps boosting, but given the assumption you cannot alter _score this whole section seems contrived.

In the instant search section they use elasticsearch's querstring query to search for `world w*` this is indeed a very slow way since it will generate a wildcard query in the background they probably should have written the query using a phrase prefix query.

Mpdreamz··on HTML5 Piano
Self promotion: https://github.com/Mpdreamz/html5-piano

Same concept but allows you to pick chords.

I let the html5piano.com domain expire but its still up on Azure:

Mpdreamz··on TypeScript: a language for application-scale JavaScript development
Magic strings can be avoided by always using a viewmodel ,using the lamda overloads on HtmlHelper (@Html.*) also T4MVC is a godsend strongly typing routes, url lookups, viewnames, filenames.

Most of these have been around since MVC 1.0.

Hope these pointers will keep you magic string free :)

Mpdreamz··on Things I didn’t know about the WebKit inspector
the difference is that CTRL+SHIFT+F works from every tab in the chrome inspector and searches globally i often just copy paste the line i want to debug from my editor in there be it a function or declaration within a function.
Mpdreamz··on Things I didn’t know about the WebKit inspector
CTRL+SHIFT+F searches through all the scripts. I use this primarily to navigate through code i.e CTRL+SHIFT+F "function showDialog("
Mpdreamz··on Elastic Search - Incorporated
Cool, get the guys rumbling to contact me very interested in their opinions.
Mpdreamz··on Elastic Search - Incorporated
Are you guys still using NEST?
Mpdreamz··on Show HN: HTML5 Piano - with its own data URI synth
I created html5piano.com with pretty much the same end goal of using browser generated sounds versus static audiofiles but got sidetracked with implementing chords and sequencer and then moved on. Great to see it implemented using data uri's!
Mpdreamz··on Gassée: Thank God Apple chose NeXT over my BeOS
Didn't apple choose NeXT largely in part of beOS notoriously hard to skin nature?
Mpdreamz··on "Breaking Bad" and its Philosophical Context - Part 1
A question unanswered is wheter Walter actually has changed at all. Had he had to make life or death decisions before the diagnosis would he truely have acted differently?

Quite often Walter's actions are motivated purely by narcisistic reasons a tendency he showed even at the start of the show.

Mpdreamz··on "Breaking Bad" and its Philosophical Context - Part 1
The feeling i get with parts is that it'll be ramblings of an unsaturated chain of thoughts. If its one big piece i asume careful thought went into the structuring and each section has been revisited once if not twice.

This not directed at you personally in any way and of course my personal bias. No evil intent was assumed :)

Mpdreamz··on "Breaking Bad" and its Philosophical Context - Part 1
I really wonder why you felt the need to cut this up in parts. I think i would have enjoyed reading your post untill part 8 in one go. I'm noticing a trend that long pieces have to be served in bitesize chunks lately either through pagination or several independant blog post. Presuming that all these part will try to get the same point across one big post versus many small ones would do that point more justice. Anyhow i hope part 2 will get on my radar when its posted.
Mpdreamz··on The Semantic Grid System: Page Layout For Tomorrow
I've used semantic.gs during the beta test period and love the fact I tell my html it's grid based using css and not the other way around. Declaring grids in HTML always felt like doing table based layouts but even more obfuscated.
Mpdreamz··on How to Improve the quality of your software: find an old computer
Fiddler can do the same for you on windows.
Mpdreamz··on Piano emulator in HTML5
Thank you, I'm using 12.0.742.122 myself but i doubt its chrome rather this thing not being memory profiled at all just yet.
Mpdreamz··on Piano emulator in HTML5
Thank you for catching this :) just committed the fix for this.
Mpdreamz··on Sqlite and couchdb creators announce unQL. SQL for NoSQL
Title is missleading. Nosql is an umbrella term for keyvalue-, document-, object-, graph-, column- etcetera- databases. The API's these provide are probably using a paradigm most natural to the actual habitat the data lives in already. Is this "no sql for nosql" really a problem that needs solving or merely a flakey abstraction thats super interesting to implement?

Unql seems to only focus on json based document stores so it might actually make a decent abstraction.

Too easy to dismiss as impractical and i hope these guys pull off something amqazing if only for json document stores.

Mpdreamz··on Only in Germany: An API with opening hours
The netherlands' chamber of commerce API shuts down at night too, which is why a free alternative had to be created (openkvk.nl) to proof there shouldnt be a need for the shutdown.
Mpdreamz··on GitHub now has view modes for image diffs.
Although i love github and this is yet another brilliant feature, we should give props where due as this as been built into tortoisediff for a while and i am sure many before it.

Mpdreamz··on New in elasticsearch: Percolator - finds saved searches that match a document
Another use case would be to setup business rules or even get a workflow going. If i add this document it matches the queries a,b,c so i can do steps x,y and/or z afterwards.

Percolators is a truely perculiar feauture indeed :)

Mpdreamz··on Nude.js | Nudity detection with JavaScript and HTMLCanvas
Wonder what came first, the clever wordplay or the actual feature. Really cool stuff though.
Mpdreamz··on Ask HN: Posterous vs A Blog
If you host a coding blog Posterous' support for gists is really awesome. Posterous can be a tad slow though and I've experienced more downtime I would tolerate in a professional setting so if its a vital part of your being I'd say roll/host your own.
Mpdreamz··on Lars Rasmussen: Why I quit Google to join Facebook
I might eat this words but nothing facebook offers to the masses has had the same impact google search and maps has. Google might have a terrible track record with sideproject but its core ventures still have immense potential.
Mpdreamz··on Scalable System Design Patterns
As a programmer the saying "A picture says more then a thousand words" often feels like a fallacy but Ricky Ho has a history of illustrating his points beautifully. His nosql patterns post is another very good read: http://horicky.blogspot.com/2009/11/nosql-patterns.html
Mpdreamz··on A brief guide to the IRC protocol
Nice never thought i'd get to mIRC.net, a site i am an admin on, through hackernews. There are several great RAW tutorials on mirc.net and mircscripts.org and in fact theraw section this blog post links too is an excellent reference point for all network deviations of the RFC's.
Mpdreamz··on Obesity: Drink till you drop
It is uncommon here in the netherlands. My mom had a gastric bypass when i was very little but even at the age of 7 to 12 i alway felt emberessed when my mom asked for a doggy bag. Even our european sizes were way too much for her. Here it is/was almost concidered a sign of being poor and having no manners. I now think its super cool off her to go against the social stigma and is able to enjoy a restaurant meal for 2 to 3 days.
Mpdreamz··on ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 - Razor View Engine
Razor is a major step in the right direction. Spark view engine still offers enough punch for me not to switch to Razor just yet. The stuff that you can do with bindings and the convention over configuration stuff are still killer features for Spark.
Mpdreamz··on I made a browser-based chat app. Based on node.js and nodechat.
Love the BitchX inspired theme :)
