MonadIsPronad··on A UK college student explaining congressional procedure to Washington
Nitpick: 'didactic' should be 'eidetic'.
MonadIsPronad··on We have used too many levels of abstractions
> Knowing what the foundations are that the edifice you've constructed sits upon allows you to affect repairs when it crumbles unexpectedly.

Finally get to use this bit of knowledge: 'effect' (the verb) was the word you wanted there.

MonadIsPronad··on Defund the Police meets the crime wave
Good article. Nice calm tone, interesting points. Seems like a good addition to the conversation.
MonadIsPronad··on Defund the Police meets the crime wave
In fairness, the article isn't written by Weiss.
MonadIsPronad··on Oculus will allow sideloading and rooting to avoid e-waste
How do we get this made into law, this unlocking of EOL hardware...
MonadIsPronad··on Google classroom and Google docs can not be used when YouTube is blocked
Geez, people must be playing a lot for Google Classrooms given the amount of anger on that thread.
MonadIsPronad··on The story of An0m Chat, Run by the Police
Does this suggest that sending messages via Signal on a stock Pixel Android phone for example, is fairly straightforward for the police to intercept? Why are people paying so much for 'security' when our everyday devices are meant to already be secure (assuming they're used in a competent way)?
MonadIsPronad··on Helm is a personal server that lives where you do
"reeks" was the word you wanted, I think
MonadIsPronad··on Canistilluse.com
That's how I pronounce it in my head, too, but I still know what it means. All is well here.
MonadIsPronad··on Google found guilty of infringing Sonos patents
This strikes me as an excellent point, how software patents tend to lack any actual solution, unlike traditional patents - I hadn't considered that before.
MonadIsPronad··on How to deliver constructive feedback in difficult situations (2019)
Yep, I was reading the examples thinking "god, I'd really hate someone talking to me like that". It feels very "corporate training speak" or something, very smarmy and false.
MonadIsPronad··on PAM Duress – Alternate passwords for panic situations
'In practice' is correct, no?
MonadIsPronad··on Memfd_secret() in 5.14
Win11 requiring TPM2.0 feels like it's edging ever closer to such an age...

Can the latest iPhones boot unsigned OSs yet? I'm guessing the jailbreakers aren't _that_ fast.

MonadIsPronad··on Time to retire the CSV?
Surely the successor should be SQLite. Tabular data like CSV, easy to view on different mediums, free and open source, single file databases. It has to be this, right?
MonadIsPronad··on U.S. opens probe into Tesla’s Autopilot over emergency vehicle crashes
Oopsie. This strikes me as perhaps one of the growing pains of not-quite-self-driving: common sense would dictate that manual control would be taken by the driver when approaching an unusual situation like a roadside incident, but we just can't trust the common sense of a minority of people.

Tesla perhaps isn't being loud enough about how autopilot isn't self-driving, and shouldn't even be relied upon to hit the brakes when something is in front of you.

MonadIsPronad··on The age of the à la carte internet
Argh, surely if we all agree that paying for journalism is a good thing, we should do what we normally do for such things - take it from taxes?
MonadIsPronad··on Show HN: This Idea Does Not Exist
"An online virtual reality surgery training simulator."

Sounds like great fun if it's open to the public :D

MonadIsPronad··on Unlocking PinkRabbit: Using 90s Email Software in 2021
This was a great read, and very impressive. I hope to one day be as comfortable with these kind of tools to just be able to say "oh let's have a quick look with the decompiler in a VM". The author just exudes competence.
MonadIsPronad··on Expanded Protections for Children
Please, can we just be allowed to control what happens on the hardware we buy? Is that so great a demand?
MonadIsPronad··on Expanded Protections for Children
This scares the heck out of me too. It just seems like such an obvious next step.

"Oh you run linux? Do you not trust the government, or are you trying to hide something?"

MonadIsPronad··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
If I'm not mistaken the power-input is via USB-C: does that imply the existence of a USB-C controller already?
MonadIsPronad··on That company whose name used to contain HTML script tags Ltd
Outstanding. What a clever, cheeky fellow. Obligatory XKCD: https://xkcd.com/327/
MonadIsPronad··on That company whose name used to contain HTML script tags Ltd
Now _that_ is pretty funny. I wonder what the company name is. Even the PDF of the incorporation certificate doesn't show the name.
MonadIsPronad··on What to Avoid When Contributing to Open-Source Projects
> We only really care about the end result of a Pull Request (in the context of Github)

Hmm, I'm not sure that's true. Imagine if this excellent commit got squashed, there'd be something really lost: https://dhwthompson.com/2019/my-favourite-git-commit

MonadIsPronad··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
Anecdotally, I can certainly relate strongly to the quotes you pointed out.
MonadIsPronad··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
This note is perhaps conflating hardware with software. It sounds like a reasonable solution to me for each university or school to have some small server hardware running free software that supports their online needs.
MonadIsPronad··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
The 'free' I believe is like the Spanish 'libre', not like 'gratis'. Put another way, it's free as in 'freedom', not free as in 'beer'.
MonadIsPronad··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
Schools seem so fundamental to creating the fabric of society, to me. To have a school system under the contractual obligations of a company, whos common primary incentive is wholly financial, seems like a good way to weaken the mechanisms that produce a good, happy society.

Free software does indeed seem like a good thing to require in our society-cornerstone systems: schools, hospitals, government systems etc.

MonadIsPronad··on Sortition
Not sure if it's related, but consistently the best engineering managers I encounter are those that do not want to be managers.
MonadIsPronad··on Sortition
The nice thing is that the increasing levels of public-awareness / call-out culture would mitigate this. All it would need is one guy on twitter to create a stir to bring opposing points into the mind of the appointed, to which the technocrats would need to have a good rebuttal or be overruled by the appointed.

I'd like to expore the idea some more, seems really interesting.
