So if you want me to code something for you, supply me the required hardware for it.
And no, you can't hack on whatever hardware.
For essential skills, I can say programming language literacy, version controls, SQLs, basic algorithms and data structure, and software dev life cycle.
The best thing you can give to a fresh dev is experience. :)
But a question to ask is... Are you willing to sacrifice?
It might be a short term sacrifice. Because maybe after few months or a year, the startup will be acquired or became a hit. We don't know.
Also, do you have family? If you have, maybe consider to ask them first.
When joining a startup, I always said to myself that it's not about the money. It's about the value (experience, learnings, etc.) you will get.
BTW, I think travelling cost and need so much money. I wonder what are Egor's source of income. Don't know him that much so I just assumed consulting (Sakurity) is just his source of income. Also, if Egor is in South East Asia at the moment, he should visit the Philippines!
I think game companies also have an R&D to improve their AI, path finding, rendering algorithms, etc.
That's it. Just find an R&D job.
In my case, it's back end. API and stuffs. I'm also trying to limit my self in using different kinds of language. My current Back end stuff today are Grails for web app, Scala for non web, Redis, memcached, MongoDB.
Don't ask me about front end. I'm not updated with it by choice.
In the meantime, here's a preview of what it can do. http://goo.gl/Lz7Vr
And here's for January 2013. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4992617
Who's Hiring is posted automatically monthly. :)
For me, it's magical!
Other than money. I believe getting something you strive for is really worth it. It will give you happiness.
Oh well, will download and try it. I like their founder, Brian Wong.
But what they don't realized is that Computer Science is more than developing a website or programming. CS deals with math, algorithms, and such words that they haven't heard before. Automata, discrete math, pumping lemma. Computer Science is much harder than they thought. With this, many students in my university shift to another course because they can't handle CS. Too many students are enrolling CS becase they think it is the trend. They think it is the right course to learn how to develop website, how to create something like Facebook, how to develop an app, how to develop something like Instagram, or even how to create a game (http://blog.jpbalb.in/post/16048908922/game-programming-anyo...)! Yes they can learn them through CS, but if that's just what they want, they can just go to the internet and do a Google search. Because again, CS is more than just that.
Finally, I think it's not the lack of staff, but the lot of students. Give those students few years in Computer Science, and I'm pretty sure those "lot" will be "few".
Update: Seen this on Reddit. http://board.flashkit.com/board/showthread.php?13608-Help-on... 13 years this time! I think he's a troll.
Your life may not improve by reading them, but it is good that you know those things. The best one I read so far was about what the boys feel about girls effort in their appearance (makeups, etc). I like how he compared the effort in making a tuna sandwich!
