Hi there.

Gen AI is for losers. You did not write or "vibe code", you purchased code from an AI vendor. They fooled you into paying them to turn your brain off. You're not being paid more to produce more. Don't be bullied into using it - so what if you are "left behind." That sounds nice actually.

MisterTea··on Should DayQuil Be Legal?
The post I replied to stated that a DXM OD is dangerous then mentions ketamine without stating its OD dangers giving it the appearance of a safe alternative.
MisterTea··on Old MIDI Instruments Don't Like Modern MIDI. What's to Be Done?
> The 8-bit microprocessor on a 1983 synth has problems keeping up with the rapid-fire data that spews relentlessly from the supercomputer-grade machine controlling it, and bad things happen as a result.

Whats to be done? Patch the software to rate limit the transmission of midi frames. This is a giant nothing burger.

MisterTea··on Ditching Vagrant: VMs with KVM and Virsh on Debian
Unfortunately it still exists. Virt manager drives me crazy because it hides the VM files in its own directory with permissions that aren't yours forcing you to use sudo to manually manage your own fucking vm files. Creating a new VM? You're forced to pick an OS by typing the name of your OS into a search box which is tedious and doesnt give you an option for generic x86 machine. I hate it with a burning passion and instead manually manage VMs by reading the qemu man page and writing a script to directly invoke qemu. I'd recommend VirtualBox over it any day.
MisterTea··on The Age of Personalized Hardware Is Coming
Instead of staring down at their phones in social situations people can pretend to pay attention wile looking at a screen. Can't wait for zombie stairs.
MisterTea··on Solar rail could become common in Europe after successful trial in Switzerland
This is another bad idea in the same vein of solar roadways. To the layman, these ideas sound fantastic. To the knowledgeable they sound downright absurd. Put them on roofs, over car parks, over land. No way should they be on difficult to access locations with vehicle traffic.
MisterTea··on Car touchscreens are cheap, not good
> I'm pretty convinced that touchscreens today are primarily a cost-saving measure, and every other justification is secondary. I hope I can convince you, too!

It amuses me that back in the 90's LCD color screens were magical fairy dust that cost about the same as what magical fairy dust would cost. Laptops with color LCD screens were like $6000 in the 90's, I think $3k over a greyscale. That's like $13k today.

Whereas the little plastic buttons and knobs were cheaper to pump out of an injection molding machine and assembled. Now screens are cheaper to make than little plastic baubles.

MisterTea··on Should DayQuil Be Legal?
> But then, overdosing dxm isn't all that healthy and I'd recommend ketamine if you want to experiment like that.

Ketamine is neurotoxic itself and can cause permanent brain damage. I can't find the info but there was someone in the tech industry who accidentally overdosed and suffered a two year bout of severe debilitating depression culminating in suicide.

MisterTea··on Resetting Xbox
> And between graphics almost certainly at the point of diminishing returns, and hardware prices like they are right now, I can't imagine there's a market to sell something more capable than current gen consoles.

I haven't bought a console since the Xbox360 and Wii. But I have a friend who still games pretty heavily and is low income. He can not afford the latest PS5 and is still on a PS4. We were talking the other day and he said "I love consoles because they are simpler and cheaper than a PC but now I can't afford either. The graphics aren't getting much better so what am I paying for? What happened to $400-$500 consoles? Remember when consoles were 200-300?" Of course those last few prices were 90/00's but I agree, the cost of a new console is quite insane for not much gain.

MisterTea··on Box3D, an open source 3D physics engine
> A lot of them collect MLB baseballs to sell them for cash.

You have evidence of this? Because it would be my first guess that the parent coerces their child to sell the ball.

MisterTea··on Rare tick-borne virus turns deadly fast as US cases reach record high
It's quite obviously sarcasm so they don't need it.
MisterTea··on Open Source Low Tech
> The counterargument is, of course, "but what's in it for me?"

People who ask this have never gone above and beyond to help someone, expecting nothing in return save for the gratitude they receive. It's a damn shame.

MisterTea··on Open Source Low Tech
> If you go to villages in developing nations, you'll see these kinds of innovative solutions all over - ...

Years ago I remember reading an article about Russians making a living in the USSR. A man in a town wanted to mow his lawn but could not afford a mower (or maybe he could not easily obtain one?) His solution was a scavenged washing machine motor mounted to an old kids tricycle spinning a home made blade.

MisterTea··on Have you restarted your computer this week?
I do the same. I am not a fan of laptops preferring instead to sit down at a desktop to work. When I'm done I exit all my programs and shut down. I don't understand people who drag their computer state around everywhere.
MisterTea··on Who are the fire-tamers?
I assume you meant Gaffer tape?
MisterTea··on Tidal AI Policy
> Do you have any recommendations for casual listening of downloaded music files?

Other than the simple approach of playlists and/or shuffle, unfortunately no.

> I just want an easy way to put some music on while I'm working.

Think of Bandcamp as a record store, not a radio station.

MisterTea··on The Boeing 747 begins its final descent
> The original -400 code was written in Pascal if I'm remembering correctly.

Could it have been Ada 83?

MisterTea··on Tidal AI Policy
Just broke 1000 albums this past weekend. It's delightful to be able to just listen to something then hand the artist money and download the flac files.

I also really like the quasi social aspect where users have simple profiles. No messages between users, no likes, no ratings, no BS. About the most you can do is leave a text review. Your profile is an image and text field so you can write a simple bio and provide links to whatever. My entire Bandcamp collection is discovered by crawling profiles and randomly listening to things. I also found some fun personal sites and so on. The site design is also simple and not a JS laden mess like "MoDeRn" ampwall.

MisterTea··on You Can Detect If Code Is Being Run Inside a Terminal
Shame the post does not go deeper and explain that isatty() is a standard C function specified by POSIX[1]. Depending on the implementation, GNU for example, isatty() calls tcgetattr(3) which performs an ioctl syscall.

MisterTea··on Steven Heller's Font of the Month: Puffery
Perfect for metal albums and concert flyers. The first image you scroll to is easily artwork for a black metal album.
MisterTea··on Hasbro's TV Contracts Ask Child Voice Actors to Sign Rights Away for AI Use
What is the future for the voice actors then? Once the AI is trained they don't need to hire the kid for further recording sessions so they can cut them loose, use the AI and pay whatever royalties.

At some point they wont even need people and you can just ask for "British Cockney spoken by an 8 year old female with a slight Chinese accent" then fine tune the results and paste in the dialogue.

MisterTea··on The disappearance of Japan's animators
Remember the joke about asking for 5 years of experience with a 5 month old framework?

This is part of the whole move fast and break things mantra. If you have to train people you aren't moving fast enough. And now they can bolt on AI turbochargers.

MisterTea··on Tech billionaires hire Democratic dealmakers in push to build a Bay Area city
If I understand correctly: California HAS to build this billionaire playground city so "thousands of jobs" can be created for a city that does not exist.
MisterTea··on 45°C cooling design cuts data center water use to near zero
> Residential house emit heat too

You are missing the context of the ecosystem - the topic is water ways. Homes aren't raising the temperature of local waterways which can wipe out entire fish and other aquatic populations while encouraging growth of oxygen depleting organisms and algae. Instead of a river or stream you have a dead stinking waterway.

MisterTea··on 52-hertz whale
The serendipitous part of this article is the mention of Collin Stetson in the music section. I met Collin when he was living in NYC around the early 00's, bar tending at a place in Williamsburg I frequented. Really nice guy who introduced me to interesting music like Mr Bungle, a band Mike Patton of Faith No More started before FNM (And I knew FNM.) I saw Collin perform at a small venue once too. Very impressive how he played the giant contrabass sax. I'm happy to see Collin built a musical career and earned a Wikipedia page.

MisterTea··on Quebec town recognizes trees as living beings with rights
> Knowing this, I'd be more than surprised if Trees - or plants in general - haven't had any methods to control their food source: the atmosphere. I believe they do.

Recently there was an article posted here that claimed trees do have some ability to control the weather. The claim is trees simultaneously release water vapor into the atmosphere influencing rains.

MisterTea··on Slate EV truck starts at $24,950
I have a 2022 CR-V and thankfully has knobs for the volume, and temperature controls with a few buttons. The touch screen actually crashed on me the other day while driving. I had to pull over to turn the car off and wait for the power module to kill the power to the screen as it didn't shut off (WTF happened to off being off!) I HATE these things with a passion.
