Hi there.

Gen AI is for losers. You did not write or "vibe code", you purchased code from an AI vendor. They fooled you into paying them to turn your brain off. You're not being paid more to produce more. Don't be bullied into using it - so what if you are "left behind." That sounds nice actually.

MisterTea··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Ah, they were proprietary then. I thought they were an early standard that lacked a 5th pin.
MisterTea··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
There was also the Micro-A which I found on some dev boards. I think the Arduino Due (Arm Cortex M3 chip) used one for the USB host port as well as an Atmel Arm uc board.

Also that weird, really small USB connector that was found on some early digital cameras. I think Kodak was a big user of it. Sorta looked like a narrower and taller version of the Mini-B. Maybe the Mini-AB but that doesn't look like it. I have one in my box at home.

> Ziptie once coiled, attach label for what format / length.

Please god, no more zip ties. Use double sided Velcro strap. You can buy it in a roll and cut to length. Reuse it all you want. Join multiple shorter lengths to make a longer one. Just please don't make me cut another god damn zip tie off a bundled cord. I deal with enough zip tie bondage fetishists at work.

MisterTea··on Technique for Manipulating Satellite Photos Now Reveals Ancient Images (2025)
Thanks for the details but I realized I should have said "Pretend I just installed GIMP and my knowledge of image editing is MS paint."

This is what I was after: "move the midpoint slider to about where the peak in the histogram is, to get an evenly distributed range."

It kinda worked! Thank you and sorry for making you explain the gory details though they are appreciated and useful.

Can you explain 2 a bit more? I see the Auto input levels but unsure what you mean by "move the midpoint to the median."

The result I got for the original mars image was a washed out red image with some yellow around the craters.

This was my biggest takeaway from Japan in terms of home design - the bathroom design. At a small apartment in Tokyo the "bathroom" was in fact three separate spaces: a nook where the washer and sink lived which opened into the living room, one side of the nook featured the toilet closet, the other, and actual bathroom with tub and shower. This lets three people use the plumbing fixtures - toilet, shower/bath and sink. Though not all of the places I stayed at split the sink and bathroom.

Contrast this with the all-in-one design where a person taking a shower monopolizes all the plumbing fixtures even while they are not using them. I was on a bachelor party trip with 8 guys and two bathrooms where some inconsiderate people camped out in the shower for 20 minutes while people waking up had to pee so badly they went outside in the bushes. Meanwhile on a trip to Japan with five people we could easily share one or two split bathrooms and never had an issue.

Oh, and the electric bidet is a clear winner in terms of bathroom accessory to buy. Less TP use and no threat of swamp ass that demands you take a shower. Heated seat in winter is a blessing, especially in the morning. After my Japan trip it was the first thing I bought when I got back home.

MisterTea··on Echoes of Stuxnet: How a 16-Year-Old Hacking Trick Is Finding New Life
> How Do We Defend Against This?

How about not using Windows in Industrial production environments. It is one of the biggest failings of the modern industrial automation industry. I am vocal about this with vendors and explain the headaches they have foisted on to me and my coworkers. Most shrug it off, though there are some who understand and are "looking for alternatives"

As I type I am fighting with restoring a Windows 2000 install on a 2000's era production machine because the vendors real-time Windows Software only runs on 2K or XP kernels. The OEM is gone and retrofitting new controls means big $$$ and days or weeks of down time which production and management will not consider. So we kick the can further and further down the road because I can wrestle the machine and bring it back to life.

DEATH TO WINDOWS IN INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION!

They did. Right at the start.

> You’re right, I shouldn’t expect laws and enforcement.

And from the original description it certainly sounds like you are living in an area where there is no enforcement. That is clearly a failure of you local municipality of which you are a part of. Now with that in mind, again, tell me how flock cameras are going to fix a seemingly non-functional government and police department?

> What a load of bullshit victim blaming.

If your local government isn't doing anything then you need to step up and protect yourself in its absence. Sorry if reality sucks.

MisterTea··on Rivian's gambit for full autonomy
Sure. So long as I don't have to pay for it.
MisterTea··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
> do you think installing flock cameras isn’t an attempt to deal with it?

It's not dealing with it because its lazy passive action where citizens shrug responsibility off to a 3rd party who only cares about making money and not the people on the other end. Nothing actually happens because cameras won't deter anything and only increase the ability for the government to abuse people.

Dealing with it means learning from the past and taking action. If the lock on your garage was picked then harden the garage lock. If your car was broken into then maybe it's safer in the garage. Buy your own motion sensing cameras with remote viewing. Install security bars or security windows and doors. Motion sensing lights all over. You either sit around and cry for someone else to magically fix the crime problem or defend your possessions.

MisterTea··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
> What else would you suggest proper support when they are harassed by crime this much?

How would a flock camera deter a thief from breaking into your garage? It's a false sense of security. I had a guy break into two tenant spaces with a screwdriver with cameras pointed all over the place. He just wore a surgical mask and hood while keeping his head down. Nothing could ID him. I had all the locks upgraded and one tenant installed an alarm system. That's all we can do.

A better question to ask is why is there so much blatant and rampant crime? Have you attended any community meetings with local representatives and voiced concerns? Have you spoke to your neighbors about these incidents (do you know your neighbors?) Maybe you live in an area who's government takes some silly light handed approach to policing, justice and reform. You either deal with it or move.

MisterTea··on Building a Wall Lamp from Scratch
No disrespect but this is pure vibe engineering. Aluminum T-slot? CNC machined parts? CPU? Unnecessary design leading to being way overbuilt with lots of material and energy wasted. My advice would be to take a wood working class where they let you build a simple project of your choosing. Your wall lamp would be a perfect project, plastic accents included. You'll learn a real skill.

I just told the landscaper don't put any pesticides or herbicides and let nature do its thing. My landscaper just takes care of the front lawn, shrubs and the road verge and is cheap enough to pay for the twice month trim and clean up. My yard is a wild jungle where I do basic clean up and pull all the rag weed. I do want to plant a lot of native wild flowers at some point.
MisterTea··on When was the last time RAM was this expensive?
> 4K editing, software development, local AI models, gaming and the ever-increasing bloated requirements from web browsers and Electron applications have all pushed up memory requirements a lot for general computer use.

We assumed RAM was going to be cheap forever. I thought it absurd when an IT friend just 2 years ago told me he specked 32GB in all new workstations he ordered for office users running MS Office and webapps. His rational: "it was cheap so why not?"

MisterTea··on Linux vs. Windows: Which Operating System Is Better for You?
Cygwin on Windows 7 was how I computed until moving to Linux after Windows 7 support ran out. I refuse to use anything after Win 7 -- noting of value was added to the OS other than stupid UI decisions, telemetry, and aggressive updates that turn on things you turned off like telemetry. Dark patterns all over.

> In Russia, it is often hard to delineate between organized crime and the FSB, because these networks overlap and they are often well established within the structures of the state.

This already applies to the USA where Trump was very likely involved with the mob who were deeply embedded in the fabric of NYC. All of his NYC construction projects were pushed through and built by mobbed up companies. It's obvious he's in bed with anyone who will get him what he wants, criminal or not.

> - Not having any banking apps on my phone. Every time my son needs a few bucks in his account, my wife has to do it if we're out.

This is the most tyrannical things about smart phones -- banking apps. I get it, the bank wants to ensure the platform is not a liability. But it forces most of us to use one of the only two "trusted" mobile providers on earth: Google or Apple, both of which are American (and I'm an American.) The only alternative is a browser which comes with its own set of problems.

MisterTea··on Making the Internet Boring
I did similar for my work PC but for the browser: turn off all the conveniences. No history in the bar so there's no way way to lazily navigate to a website, I have to manually type in the URL. Saved passwords and cookies? Nope! closing the browser wipes history.

In the early days it also killed starter motors as they weren't rated for that duty cycle.

I feel these kinds tech are more symbolic than functional and exist to simply check off boxes to obtain environmental ratings. I would even guess the environmental ratings are also short sighted and exist as symbolic gestures of environmentalism. Basically, environmentalism performance theater.
