MissTake··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
A myriad of small businesses also use Facebook as their public facing website.
MissTake··on Show HN: Airy – Free, fast, and simple voice content creation
As with seemingly all AI these days - it seems to fail with prosody and simply speaks the very next word with zero regard to the nuance or cadence that author intended, or an understanding of any the words being spoken.

When AI achieves the ability to deliver some of Shakespeare’s greatest soliloquies or monologues, then I’ll pay attention.

>I t's a bit like using c# or powershell on Linux… but I wouldn't consider it a first class citizen.

C# is very very much a first class citizen on Linux. It may not be native, but you can run binaries on Linux without needing the runtime when you compile it to target the platform.

I wrote a couple of monoservices on my Mac using c# which ran perfectly on my Microk8s cluster on Linux.

Not sure $12.00 a month for a spinnable VM on top of my other AI costs is worth it myself.

Would like something where I pay for my own architecture.

MissTake··on Thunderbird Pro August 2025 Update

MissTake··on Sandstorm- self-hostable web productivity suite
Is it just me, or is Sandstorm just not maintained any more?

The most recent closed issues were self closed rather than as the result of development, while meanwhile the open issues continue to pile up with virtually no code changes made to the tree…

It’s a shame because it seems like it could have been a thing. Sadly though it’s hard to justify time investment into a platform like this if you know there’s little to no chance of getting any issues fixed.

MissTake··on Nick Clegg: Artists' demands over copyright are unworkable
https://archive.is/koHVt

More like Meta’s demands are unworkable.

> However, Clegg said that their demands to make technology companies ask permission before using copyrighted work were unworkable and “implausible” because AI systems are already training on vast amounts of data. He said: “It’s out there already.”

In other words, “we’ve been stealing everything and built our business on that theft, it would hurt Meta if they were held to accountable for all that theft”.

MissTake··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Neither solution is guaranteed to stick around for 20 years.

As we’ve seen before, it takes one VC investment to change a source available license into something not so friendly and forks are never guaranteed.

> You could make the same argument for Bernie Madoff, who probably isn't a danger to society considering his fraud is out in the open.

Pretty sure Madoff isn’t currently a danger to society because he’s been dead for almost 4 years now.

MissTake··on JetBrains Fleet drops support for Kotlin Multiplatform
I’m simply stating that for something to be objective it has to be an absolute irrefutable fact.

Anything else is subjective.

A UI can never be objectively bad because it is based upon how someone sees it.

For me, Gimp has a subjectivity bad UI because I’ve never been able to get my head around it.

Other people find it’s perfect and that it’s really easy to use.

Both statements are subjective.

“Objective” and “subjective” are both words that have well defined accepted dictionary definitions.

> When designing readable interfaces for different vision capabilities, the WCAG guidelines recommend the following contrast ratios

So, they’re recommendations, not facts.

A fact is not a recommendation.

You can cling to this until the cows come home, but anything visual is dependent on the viewer. It’s not a fact. It’s subjective.

“minimum ratio”

Which is what? Is it a well defined fact?

MissTake··on JetBrains Fleet drops support for Kotlin Multiplatform
“objectively bad”

No, it’s subjectively bad for you.

It really grinds my gears when people use “objectively” when being objective is to deal purely in unbiased observable, repeatable facts.

Your justification starts first with screen contrast - something that is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Then you go on about “finger gymnastics” for shortcuts - again something that you (and yes I don’t disagree others as well) suffer from.

Neither are issues that have bothered me one iota - so much so that your mention is really the first time I’ve thought about either.

However you then compare this to another app that also has many detractors thus creating an instant bias.

MissTake··on A Rust procedural language handler for PostgreSQL
It’s hard to feel enthused by this when there’s been no traction for nearly a year now on the project.

PG17 support was promised last July but has yet to materialize.

I know OSS authors owe us nothing and it’s their choice to do what they will, but it does make it hard for others to want to embrace these projects when they stagnate.

MissTake··on Qualcomm wins licensing fight with Arm over chip designs
Not to be pedantic, but…

Acorn Computers started off much earlier (I owned an Acorn Atom when it was released) which begat the Electron, then the BBC Micro and then the Archimedes.

At that time ARM was just an architecture owned by Acorn. They created it with VSLI technology (Acorn’s Silicon partner) and used the first RISC chip in the BBC Micro before then pivoting it to the Archimedes.

Whilst Acorn itself was initially purchased by Olivetti, who eventually sold what remained years later to Morgan Stanley.

The ARM division was spun off as “Advanced RISC Machines” in a deal with both Apple, and VSLI Technology after Olivetti came onto the scene.

It is this company that we now know as Arm Holdings.

So it’s not entirely accurate to claim “they had a full computer system” as that was Acorn Computers, PLC.

Citation needed.

All the vendors we use have STOP functionality baked in as it’s the correct way to ensure we can unsubscribe folk.

Even the FCC[1] seems to agree.

MissTake··on Tesla Cybertruck workers begin 3-day furlough, signaling demand slowdown
Can’t vouch for the veracity of this[1] but, if true, it’s a pretty damning indictment on the Cyber Truck’s popularity.

Just watched one YouTube video where the hosts daughter was bemoaning that they were no longer the only Cyber Truck in the neighborhood and that there were now two more owners and how much this lessened her happiness in the thing.

That’s what happens when people buy into an ideal that’s in reality just an expensive toy.

MissTake··on Americans will be able to renew their passports online
I gave up on this method because the system rejected every single photo attempt, even though I met all the requirements.

Ended up going to AAA for the photo and 10 minutes later at my local USPS my application was done.

I quite honestly spent less time doing it the old fashioned way than I’d spent trying the new online method.

Eventually I think this will be a useful method, but right now it was a real PITA for me.

MissTake··on First-in-Nation Bill Requiring Cars to Warn Speeding Drivers Goes to CA Governor
Good luck finding speed limit signs in the USA.

I’ve lost track the number of times I’ve exited a construction and not known what the hell the speed limit is because previously it changed somewhere within the zone before the construction started.

Or worse, a total lack of signs on rural roads.

Just had a case today in WI where I left one road at 55 MPH onto a county road, and had no idea that the new limit was 45 until we checked Google Maps.
