I'm in your machine, Intel ME has been broken 100%.

MintelIE··on Security Bulletin VLC 3.0.11
Remember when VLC was in the Vault 7 Wikileaks release? It turned out the CIA could deliver a media file which had a surveillance payload. It wasn't ever made clear if this required a special bugged VLC or if the main VLC was in fact the bugged one.
MintelIE··on Why systemd is still divisive after all these years
Systemd is flaky and bloated. I guess for certain enterprise applications people unfamiliar with Unix might see the utility in it but there are many init replacements which are much better. Heck daemontools still competes favorably with systemd in terms of functionality.
MintelIE··on Washington's rush to smash tech's liability protection
Welp, looks like if you decide to edit what people post you become a publisher. Just like it says in Section 230.
MintelIE··on New Apple Developer Forums
Is this going to be like the normal Apple forums where no Apple employees ever appear except to poo-poo widespread issues?

That always bothered me.

MintelIE··on Reverse Engineering Snapchat: Obfuscation Techniques
Doesn't Snapchat mainly rely upon the iOS or Android platform having some software that prevents screen shots if a 'no screen shots' flag is set? I always thought this was their core defense.
MintelIE··on Microsoft pitched facial recognition to the DEA
I have to go ahead and disagree with you there on this point. The War On Drugs is intended to hurt violent street gangs, often foreign-based.
MintelIE··on Zoom End-to-End Encryption Whitepaper
How can they offer E2E while still complying with Chinese laws?
MintelIE··on Microsoft pitched facial recognition to the DEA
No thanks! Currently China is using drugs to destabilize and damage the USA. Fentanyl is a weapon.
MintelIE··on Microsoft pitched facial recognition to the DEA
I mean this is good, right? There are a LOT of illegal aliens involved in the drug trade. These people aren't known for their propensity to have correct ID. The only practical way to ID them is with facial recognition, DNA, and fingerprints.
MintelIE··on FreeBSD 11.4
Is this what they call pilpul? Neat.
MintelIE··on FreeBSD 11.4
Many people have rejected the systemd cult of bloat and scripts are easy to read, write, understand, and maintain. Most consist of generic boilerplate anyway.

Nobody wants to replace a simple init system with something with 1.5 million lines of code like systemd. For crying out loud, it’s 2020.

MintelIE··on $2k for a Watermelon? That’s a Bargain as Deflation Returns in Japan
What a terrible horrible article. Where do they get the droolers currently labeled journalists anyhow?

This is a Shameful.

MintelIE··on GitHub isn't fun anymore
Microsoft sucks the life out of everything they touch.
MintelIE··on UNM researchers document the first use of maize in Mesoamerica
First KNOWN use. Diggers often claim to have found the first or earliest whatever it is, but they omit the qualifier.
MintelIE··on Opinion: Case for removing master-slave terminology from music production tools
This is really creepy and I have an intense dislike for the people behind it. Nobody alive today was a slave and choosing to become ass hurt at industry standard terms, which aren't even racial in nature (every race has been enslaved), isn't acceptable.

I never used Github as my primary host for projects, merely as a social network to show off my projects. But I'll be moving away from them now because I simply don't want to see crazy lefties redefining my language to suit their whims. And there's no discussion at all, it's all unilateral or you're a Nazi.

OK then.

MintelIE··on Don’t Blame the Public for Coronavirus Confusion
Remember folks, masks don't help and there is no possibility of human to human transmission.

I personally blame the media, after all they are the ones creating the confusion.

MintelIE··on WD Red DM-SMR Update: 3 Vendors Bail and WD Knew of ZFS Issues
Personally I won't buy another WD or Sandisk product ever again. Companies like this don't ever really come off as being sorry for the scams they pull, so it's best to just cut them off completely. I de-Googled too because of their shady practices.

EDIT: For those who can't use the Internet to look things up, Sandisk and G-Technology and some random thing called Upthere are all WD brands.

MintelIE··on After GitHub CEO backs Black Lives Matter, workers demand an end to ICE contract
Going woke isn’t a great move for a company. And how many workers? Just the vocal “activists?”

In the near future companies will be wary of hiring people with a history of shrill woke activism. Better a quiet Nazi than a vocal Communist.

MintelIE··on Scientists have lost their jobs after NIH probe into foreign ties
It'd be interesting to see what research these spies were stealing or influencing.
MintelIE··on The past three months have proved it: the costs of lockdown are too high
Why don't all these people who are out of work just learn to code?
MintelIE··on The origins of Objective-C at PPI/Stepstone and its evolution at NeXT
Objective-C was a very interesting language, in some ways much better than C++ while filling the same type of role. It's a shame that so much effort is being thrown away by Apple. I recommend anybody who has an Objective-C program that they don't wish to rewrite in Swift to look into GNUstep. I personally have two Objective-C projects which I will not be porting to Swift, instead I will port them from Cocoa to GNUstep.
MintelIE··on Transmeta Crusoe
So did they get bought out by the NSA or something? It's weird how the whole company and everything else just disappeared.
MintelIE··on Ask HN: When, if ever, will it be safe to travel again?
Assuming there will be a vaccine is an act of faith. They have been working on a SARS vaccine for years, with billions invested and several man-centuries, and have failed so far.
MintelIE··on Ask HN: When, if ever, will it be safe to travel again?
The last two times I flew on a plane I got deathly ill. In fact the second time the sickly mal-air of the cabin was so overwhelming that I remarked to my wife that I was sure to get ill from the flight.

And if you look at how cabin air is handled, there is very little chance that you can sanitize the plane effectively.

Auto travel is out too, unless you camp or have a trailer or RV, think of how deeply embedded the virus is in the pillows, carpeting, and bedding in hotels. And our second wave is just getting started as well.

I give it 2-3 years.

MintelIE··on Microsoft: Rust Is the Industry’s ‘Best Chance’ at Safe Systems Programming
Rust is way too big for systems programming. We're hitting walls here left and right as well. Fatter languages are not the answer no matter how safe they are.

Lessons were learned 60 years ago which were never properly applied across industry.

MintelIE··on Every year I fill out this survey from Apple, for Apple developers
I think we are meant to divine Apple’s plan from clues. Much of the Unix side of OS X or whatever it’s called now is getting pretty old, much apparently unchanged from years ago. So my guess is this stuff is going away sooner than later. They finally admitted that OpenGL is being deprecated but in retrospect we should have known this by 2010 at the absolute latest.

Since I no longer use OS X and haven’t installed the current or past few versions I couldn’t tell you what is being poorly maintained or ignored but my guess is a more familiar person could guess what Tim’s abandoning next with some scrutiny and a handful of yarrow stalks.

MintelIE··on Zoom Acknowledges It Suspended Activists' Accounts at China's Request
The recent arrest of Charles Lieber and other professors shows that academia is a big target for the Chinese.
MintelIE··on Storage Matters: Why Xbox and Playstation SSDs Usher in a New Era of Gaming
Every generation has seen the various console makers hyping some magic technical aspect of their machines. We had Blast Processing, Mode 7, polygons, MORE polygons, the Emotion Engine, RAMBUS, hyper futuristic Cell technology, and none of it solves the central problem for game designers - how to make a FUN game.

I’d give up this ultra fast SSD in a heartbeat if it meant there wouldn’t be any pay to win or DLC to buy for a half completed but shipped anyway game.

MintelIE··on Zoom Acknowledges It Suspended Activists' Accounts at China's Request
Most Universities and companies really don’t care, it seems. Zoom is one of the many shady Chinese companies (yes I am aware of Zoom’s recent change in status here) who we just do business with no matter HOW harmful it could potentially be. Recently there was concern about how certain anti-cheat software included with Chinese games is an effective root kit as well. And several large American firms have been help China build out their surveillance infrastructure which is used to send people to death camps.
