MikeTaylor··on Too many people are buying cars using financial products they do not understand
The two-step plan for effortlessly being better off than you otherwise would be (I won't say getting rich): 1. Buy the cheapest car you're OK with. 2. But the best house you can afford.

This is simple. Cars (especially new cars) depreciate super-fast; and houses have appreciated at crazy rates at least for the last few decades. Don't put your money in a fancy car.

MikeTaylor··on Jeff Varasano's Famous New York Pizza Recipe (2008)
SO MUCH GREAT ADVICE!

Thank you all, folks, this has been an education.

MikeTaylor··on Jeff Varasano's Famous New York Pizza Recipe (2008)
Folks who know pizza:

What can those us with regular ovens do? You know, the sort of oven you find in most kitchens that top out at 250C (500F)?

MikeTaylor··on International Travel Guide for Basecamp employees
Exactly. The Basecamp instructions are written on the assumption that not all of their employees will be "lucky" all of the time (where "lucky" means "treated with what in most countries would be considered a bare minimum of respect").
MikeTaylor··on Unix Is Not an Acceptable Unix (2015)
It seems that the lessons of Rob Pike's 1983 talk "cat -v Considered Harmful" have still not been absorbed 34 years later. Here is the abstract of the talk, together with the link to the paper (co-authored with Brian Kernighan) that evolved from it: http://gaul.org/files/cat_-v_considered_harmful.html
MikeTaylor··on GIMP – 2016 in review
I know you can. But for someone who mostly uses GIMP to crop screenshots, for example, the workflow is used to be: 1. Load PNG 2. Edit PNG 3. Save PNG 4. Quit

Now it's 1. Load PNG 2. Edit PNG 3. Export as PNG (retyping the extension) 4. Quit 5. Say that yes, you do want to quit even though there are unsaved changes (because there are not). 6. Worry about whether there really WERE unsaved changes after all.

I fully understand why graphics professionals prefer the XCF-only approach; what I can't understand is why the GIMP people flatly refused to let the rest of us use the software the way that suits us.

MikeTaylor··on GIMP – 2016 in review
Shame they are still refusing to fix the deliberately-introduced "can only save in XCF format" bug.
MikeTaylor··on Gates Foundation research can’t be published in top journals
A better headline would be "Some journals refuse to meet conditions for publishing Gates-funded research, which is their own stupid fault",
MikeTaylor··on We don't need a Tech Lead
Let me summarise all the comments:

1. People who are tech leads feel that there is a need for tech leads. 1. People who are not tech leads feel that there is no need for tech leads.

MikeTaylor··on The Fallacy of Chesterton’s Fence (2014)
It doesn't put any blame on anyone. It encourages us to stop and think in such a way that there is no blame for anyone. (Typically, the people who built the fence are not here any more, so we can't make any more requirements on them, only on ourselves.)
MikeTaylor··on RoboVM Is No Longer Open-Source
There is no such thing as "no longer open source". The story here is in fact "the copyright holders of RoboVM have made a proprietary derivative".
MikeTaylor··on First chapter of Kernighan and Donovan's new Go book [pdf]
I think everyone missed it. Glad you, at least, didn't :-)
MikeTaylor··on First chapter of Kernighan and Donovan's new Go book [pdf]
Never gonna happen, Go 2 is considered harmful.
MikeTaylor··on The International Flag of Planet Earth
Yeah, the Futurama one is just fine if you subscribe to American Exceptionalism. Which would suit 4.48% of the world population just fine.
MikeTaylor··on The International Flag of Planet Earth
Needs to have Pluto knocked out :-)
MikeTaylor··on I Do Not Agree to Your Terms
That is true; but surely provision of an RSS feed constitutes a presumptive licence to redistribute.
MikeTaylor··on C Questions and Answers
The original article makes it clear that this is how things work with C globals, not locals. If you compile and run this program with gcc -Wall -pedantic x.c && ./a.out there will be no errors and it will emit i=10 as expected:

  int i;
  int i=10;
  #include<stdio.h>
  int main(int argc, char *argv[]) {
      printf("i=%d\n", i);
      return 0;
  }
MikeTaylor··on Stuff I've Messed Up While Interviewing
The point of fizz-buzz and similar exercises is not to find suitable candidates. It's to eliminate plainly unsuitable candidates, very early in the process, at minimal cost.
MikeTaylor··on Show me the salary!
This is simple. I won't waste my time applying for a job that doesn't even bother to tell me what they're going to pay -- any more than I would buy a car without knowing its engine capacity, mileage, etc. The idea is idiotic.

So: the only people who will apply for jobs with no salary listed are the ones desperate for any job.

Are they the people you want to hire?

MikeTaylor··on Kale, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts are all the same species
What you are describing is known as the Biological Species Concept. It's one of at least 28 species concepts that have been proposed in the scientific literature -- they were surveyed in a review paper whose reference irritatingly escapes me. Anyway, the BSC is not the only game in town (and is particularly useless to those, like me, who are palaeontologists.)
MikeTaylor··on How unutterably rude Skype has become
The is the argument for being on Facebook, too. It's a compelling one, for sure. The value of being on a network is the value of the people on the network times the quality of the tool. Skype and Facebook both have such huge networks that they know they can let the tool quality fall dramatically without it hurting them too much. But Skype might be close to walking off the cliff at this point.
MikeTaylor··on On being targeted by the NSA
Thanks for the concern, but no worries -- that's open by design. Which isn't to say it couldn't use a bit of a tidy up.
MikeTaylor··on MIT And Dropbox Alums Launch Inbox, a Next-Generation Email Platform
Not a single mention of encryption, security, PGP or GPG. In my book, that makes it a non-starter as a new email platform in 2014.
MikeTaylor··on SecureDrop
Good thing criminals have no way to obtain a fake photo-ID.
MikeTaylor··on On being targeted by the NSA
> Please name names?

Seriously? It's not _perfectly_ clear who I'm talking about?

MikeTaylor··on On being targeted by the NSA
So who could be carrying out a man-in-the-middle attack on the TOR project? It's pretty hard to think of candidates, isn't it?
MikeTaylor··on On being targeted by the NSA
I can't even see this blog. See the screenshot at http://www.miketaylor.org.uk/tmp/tor-mitm.png

MikeTaylor··on Losing A Lawsuit In The Philippines
I couldn't find the bit corresponding with "6. Was arrested and put in a Philippines jail cell". That links to the section entitled "Retaliation" which doesn't say anything about being arrested or imprisoned. What am I missing?
MikeTaylor··on Google is Breaking the Internet
Maybe he's just really powerful?
MikeTaylor··on All of Bach
This is marvellous; but I can't find any indication on the site of the terms that they provide the music under. Is it public domain, CC By licenced, what?
