MichaelMug··on 13-year-old makes PasteBin C2 botnet in Go
Reminds me of bots that used either encoded or encrypted posts on specific reddit subs.

There’s a whole lot of side channels out there.

MichaelMug··on Netflix Uses Seemingly AI-Manipulated Images in True Crime Doc
I don’t think this is news or anyone should be surprised.

Many documentaries and docu-dramas stretch the truth a lot and in some cases non-obvious ways to make events more dramatic.

One has to remember that it is entertainment first. And no guarantees have been made at anytime by Netflix to only tell you the viewer the truth and nothing but the truth.

Also I recall seeing horror movies openly use “based on a true story”- which is obviously not true.

MichaelMug··on macOS Doesn't Work Anymore
I've been using Apple Mac's since early 2000s-ish, iPhone and iPad since release. It seems to me like in the past 5ish years the amount of bugs and UI inconsistencies in iOS/MacOS has increased. A few times I've wanted to start a blog cataloging all these things.

For example on iPad there is no redo button in the iWork apps. It took me a google to find out you have to press and hold the undo button to reveal the redo button. I admit this is a minor nuisance, but there was plenty of screen real estate to show that button.

The most significant bug I've been dealing with lately is with mobile Safari whereby it will just crash. There are a few ways this happens. The first is if I create a new tab, randomly I will get a blank page where nothing works which requires a force restart. Another way is if I press the back button, or navigate to a new page via tapping a link, safari will not load the page. The current page freezes. Again requiring a force restart.

iPad Pro supports an external monitor. This has been entirely unusable for me. Out of nowhere the video signal is lost. A few times shortly after that the iPad restarts. Additionally with external monitor mode one is forced to use Stage Manager which is entirely unusable without a proper touchpad. If you're using a mouse good luck getting the stages to reveal themselves. I expected more from Apple who prides themselves on having the best UI/UX.

A other issue is Apple has added the ability for iPad apps to have "windows". This doesn't work as expected. Many times I've created a window, worked on something else and return to safari to find no windows and all my tabs gone. I suspect it has something to do with closing the app.

My favorite bug on MacOS which I encounter sometimes is reconnecting to SMB shares. They randomly not reconnect after waking from sleep. A reboot fixes this. Although this could be an issue with the server.

Closing on a positive note- the one killer feature I miss when I'm working on Windows is Preview. It's really a great app.

MichaelMug··on First look at a real Snapdragon X laptop
How much will this cost?

Personally I'm finding it hard to justify spending >$1500 on a windows ARM laptop. Not saying Mac is better. But I like Apple's design language more.

MichaelMug··on Cosine.club: A music similarity search engine
What are the heuristics? I would really be interested in something that could find similar music by rhythm, chord progressions and keys.
MichaelMug··on LCD displays still don't match the responsiveness of clunky CRT screens (2019)
I use LG C2 OLED's and I experience eye straining that I don't on LCD monitors. I haven't had the time to look into the cause.

Interesting app. I was thinking about this just the other day in the midst of the Humane AI pin reviews and the article about COVID-19 brain fog.

There is a compelling case for a wearable/app that can see and hear everything around me and provide just-in-time intelligence.

MichaelMug··on What's the best (non-tablet) software for kids?
I remember in the 90s playing a whole lot of educational software at home and school. This has since disappeared. Edmark Zap!, Math Quest, Mental Math, Carmen Sandiego, Pajama Sam. The latter two being slightly less educational. You can find them on the web and can be run in WASM emulators from the browser.

Most games I see today are aimed at teens/adults for console/pc. And the others are ad serving platforms disguised as games on mobile. Although Netflix subscribers have access to many mobile games sans ads.

MichaelMug··on TIL I use only 82% of my MacBook's standard US keyboard
Out of curiosity how did you measure this?
MichaelMug··on Why a $100k income no longer buys the American Dream in most places
Which real estate investors? Because it’s a spectrum. From the mom and pop trying to supplement their income to the investment firms that bought tens of thousands of properties. The latter being a bigger problem here.

What I’ve seen lately is mega apartment complexes being built and funded by private equity. That’s not good either. Things will end up like Europe where no one owns their flat they just rent in perpetuity.

MichaelMug··on Microsoft's AI Copilot Is Starting to Automate the Coding Industry
Is 2021 the correct date for Copilot preview?
MichaelMug··on MKBHDs for Everything
The drama tweets are just an ad. You kind of want to find out who "Daniel Vassallo" is, and of course he's selling a subscription.

MichaelMug··on Why Reddit's Troll Problem is By Design
> Once upon a time, Reddit was created by people with strong beliefs in freedom of speech

> If your karma is too low, you’ll be prevented from writing comments in some subreddits. Your comments might be auto-collapsed, auto-deleted, or shadow-banned (depends on the subreddit settings that the moderators chose). You might also be rate limited, so you can only comment once every ten minutes. And this depends on just on your global karma value, but your karma score in a subreddit as well.

If the origins of Reddit was to champion freedom of speech, then it has deviated far from that.

Karma makes sense as a mechanism to prevent truly bad actors; i.e. users who are not behaving in the spirit of discourse: spammers/griefers/trolls. However it has a greater chilling effect as it effectively enables censorship, aids bad actors with karma gaming, and promotes the formation of echo chambers.

This is not a reflection of me or my views. I've observed numerous instances where perfectly valid contributions are buried under a pile of downvotes simply because they deviate from the accepted norm of a subreddit. For example, I was browsing one of the popular MacOS subreddits and the comments essentially boiled down "Mac Good, Windows Bad". So much misinformation was spread about how Windows works. Anyone who posted clarifying information correcting the misinformation about Windows was downvoted. Those comments are auto-collapsed, top level ones are buried behind the "show more comments" button.

To an extent I have observed this on Hacker News.

I've started playing a game where I try to guess what the comments are going to say for a particular post on Reddit and HN. Many times I'm right. I can tell right away what posts/comments are going to get lots of upvotes.

For example, do an ASK HN on show your personal blog. Easy way to gain karma. On Reddit I've noticed mentions of cats, anti-landlord, use of specific phrases garners the most upvotes. It would not surprise me if a GPT was trained to talk like a Redditor. I've had the thought to compile a list of common "redditisms".

Karma is not the problem. The issue squarely is were all just faceless usernames. So it is easy to dehumanize.

MichaelMug··on Ask HN: It would be nice to see a useful visual language
Pythonista exists still.
MichaelMug··on Apple plans Mac line overhaul with AI-focused M4 chips
Right now “AI” is running in a datacenter. Is the plan to run a local LLM?
MichaelMug··on Amazon virtually kills efforts to develop Alexa Skills
"Thank you. I will consider donating. I did not mean to imply that I would throw them in the garbage. I meant more that I would take them to my city's electronics recycling drop-off.
MichaelMug··on Humane AI Pin
The design is very cool. But, $700 is a no from me.
MichaelMug··on Amazon virtually kills efforts to develop Alexa Skills
It's not surprising to me. Alexa was entirely botched IMO.

For example, I would ask Alexa "can my dog eat <X>". In the beginning it was not clear to me this was a third party skill. Then one day Alexa would respond with something like "nay, Dr. Wolf says ..." (I don't quite remember). I was surprised because who speaks like that? I then realized it was an Alexa Skill made by a third party developer. The developer later attempted to monetized this skill so you could only ask the question 3 times and after that it would bill you.

Alexa has a lot of other issues. Every room in the house has an Alexa Echo Show. But the screen real estate is entirely wasted with useless stuff. Very limited customization.

I'm in process of replacing my home automation with Lutron products. And the Alexa will soon be gone from my home. It seems like everything Amazon does is half-baked, but enough to get out the door. There is no polish at that company.

MichaelMug··on My New Home Server
I’ve been using HP EliteDesk 800 Mini G2, G3 and G4 instead of Raspberry Pi’s. Super cheap on eBay from IT recyclers as they come off lease.

I’m dumbfounded by the price of these Mini’s new. The latest G9 is around 1.4k. My guess is business pricing.

I’ve basically used these so every TV in the house is a PC. I also use one at my desk with RDP so I can keep my loud and hot PC in the game room.

KidPix. Drawing is stimulating for the mind. Of course now it can be run in the browser: https://kidpix.app/
MichaelMug··on CNN's answer to the question: 'What's wrong with Tesla'
> Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, could also be causing problems for the brand with his increasingly controversial public pronouncements.

We arrive at the real reason for this article. Lots of articles recently about Tesla’s performance. And, they all casually mention Elon’s views as a culprit. I don’t buy it. I suspect this is part of some campaign due to the events of Twitter/X.

Tesla’s performance is the result of something else. I’d like to read an article that does some investigation rather than speculation.

MichaelMug··on Ask HN: Why has WordPress been so resilient?
Plugins, themes and not beholden to the whims of a SaaS company.
MichaelMug··on Teachers are using AI to grade essays. Some experts are raising ethical concerns
This is outdated. Educators have already realized this. Things have pivoted to using AI to generate assignments, homework and tests. In the past these assignments came from specialized coursework books that were edited, and came with a teacher edition to explain rationale and learning goals. This has all been thrown out and replaced with AI. Now that AI is making coursework, and combined with overworked teachers, there is a lack of oversight in what AI is generating.

MichaelMug··on A town employee lowered the fluoride in water for years (2022)
> its addition to municipal water can amount to an unwanted medication

Very interesting way of thinking about that. I understand the benefits of fluoride but I also understand this sentiment.

MichaelMug··on Tesla reportedly drops plan to build $25,000 EV
Completely agree.
MichaelMug··on Why are kids being forced to eat lunch in silence?
Mandarin and Spanish are absolutely worth learning. Anyone who tells you differently is limiting themselves. There is a much larger economy that doesn't speak English.
MichaelMug··on Tesla reportedly drops plan to build $25,000 EV
Would this have to do with ease of getting car loans? My coworkers and social circle all have $500-$1000/mo. car payments, and some have two car payments in that range. And the MSRP of these cars are 75k+. So it seems there is no incentive for an auto manufacture to make a car less than $45k.
