MetallicCloud··on Audiblegate
At faang companies, there's never a spec document.
MetallicCloud··on Water drinking acutely improves orthostatic tolerance in healthy subjects (2002)
Same thing for me. I used to do it with friends when I was a teenager. Until they got the idea I was faking and let me hit the deck, expecting me to catch myself.
MetallicCloud··on Chip shortage leads carmaker Opel to shut German plant until 2022
One of my favourite what ifs https://what-if.xkcd.com/8/
MetallicCloud··on 2006: Dwarf Fortress
The easiest way is to get a Lazy Newb Pack https://www.dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Utility:Lazy_New...
MetallicCloud··on I quit – Peak indifference, big tobacco
Yep, I started when I was 15. Quit many times, and finally managed to get off them about 10 years ago. But I could take it up again in a second, the thought of having one never completely goes away.
MetallicCloud··on Primates change their 'accent' to avoid conflict
My wife is exactly the same, and has the same concern. She's convinced if we moved to England, she'll involuntarily pick up their accent in a few months.
MetallicCloud··on River Runner: drop a raindrop anywhere in the USA, watch where it ends up
One thing which I suppose isn't surprising, but still was amazing to see at scale, is I put a drop in Colorado that ended up in the Gulf of Mexico. As the camera followed the path, it's nothing but farms, with the odd city sprinkled in. I got bored and left in Nebraska, but I imagine it's like that the whole way.

It's obvious it takes a lot of land to feed everyone, but to see it like that really drove it home.

MetallicCloud··on ●●|●●●●●|●●|●
In people like these and haven't tried playing the game `Control`, you definitely should. It is very heavily inspired by the SCP project, and is a super fun and interesting game.
MetallicCloud··on Babel is used by millions, so why are we running out of money?
Really? Maybe that sort of money is available in Sydney. I never saw anything close to that level in Melbourne, particularly for a mid level developer. I've had to move to the US to make a decent wage.
MetallicCloud··on How do plants extract nutrients from the ground?
I'm not a gardener at all, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out, should it?

Get like 9 of the same plants at the same point in the life cycle, wash 3, leave 3 and do the 50\50 for 3. Compare results.

If it's as big a deal as people make it out to be, it should be obvious, no?

MetallicCloud··on How C++ Resolves a Function Call
Your example here is C style though.

struct S { int x; };

is perfectly valid C++

MetallicCloud··on Noise pollution hurts the heart
I lived in NY for about 4 years, and I'm still amazed by the similar things I saw. For example, one day my upstairs neighbour didn't feel like pulling up the drive way, so she just parked her car in the middle of our cramped, busy one way street so she could run upstairs and grab some things.

Of course all the people stuck trying to drive down the street started honking and yelling. She got back to the car, yelled back at them and drove off.

I wouldn't consider doing something like that in a million years, but for native New Yorkers, it's par for the course.

MetallicCloud··on Super-spreading wedding demonstrates Covid-19 risk posed by holiday gatherings
Or they'd rather take a chance to see their loved ones, rather than be safe and isolated.
MetallicCloud··on A US Visa in 937 Days
I had a similar experience. I was flying to the US for a job interview, so I ticked the box that said I was seeking work. I was denied and missed my flight. I've been told I will never be eligible for and ESTA again. I got the job and am now on an E-3 visa, however if I ever want to visit and don't have an E-3, I need to apply for a proper tourist visa.
MetallicCloud··on Sierra was captured, then killed, by an accounting fraud
Disco Elysium has it's roots in the old school point and click adventures, but has a more dynamic storyline. It would easily be the best point and click game I've ever played.
MetallicCloud··on AT&T is selling your phone calls and text messages to marketers, how to opt out
This post made me look into my ISP, it seems I was opted in for a bunch of nonsense as well. If anyone uses xfinity, you can opt out here:

MetallicCloud··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued (2012)
I've read similar things about how most programming work is just plumbing together existing code fairly regularly on HN. Is that really what most people do? Is it a web development thing? That's not my experience at all, and it sounds mind numbingly awful.
MetallicCloud··on Bullfrog After Populous
I loved magic carpet and finished it, but even in my wide eyed youth the grind was pretty hard.
MetallicCloud··on Scrollbar Blindness
I also very much hate this feature, and trigger it often. However if you shake the window you have again, all the minimised windows should be restored.
MetallicCloud··on Supercapacitors from Standard Bricks
I'm no expert, but anecdotally in Australia I see lots of brand new brick houses.
MetallicCloud··on 95% of Programming Isn’t Hard (and other random thoughts)
I've been walking for a good number of years now, yet every now and again I'll trip on something, or bump into a wall. I wouldn't call walking hard.
MetallicCloud··on Why it’s hard to kill the Bloomberg terminal (2019)
They are doing that, and have been doing it for years. Adoption is extremely slow.
MetallicCloud··on Face ID and Touch ID for the Web
You can use Bitwarden for free while using their servers.
MetallicCloud··on Advice to new managers: don't joke about firing people
I prefer not to try and push everything down and bury it. I've definitely thought about what life would be like if I got divorced, just like I've daydreamed about what my life would be like if I didn't have kids. That doesn't mean I'm going to 'go out for some cigarettes'.

I don't think that I need to hack my psyche to ensure I don't accidentally trick myself into wanting divorce.

But my initial point stands. If you don't want to joke about divorce with your wife, then don't. My issue is with stating it as fact that other people shouldn't either.

MetallicCloud··on Advice to new managers: don't joke about firing people
Me and my wife joke about getting divorced all the time, and we've been happily married for 15 years. Maybe that joke wouldn't be appropriate for your marriage, but I'm not really into people giving absolute truths about other peoples lives and pretending like they're gospel.

Every relationship is different, and there will be different relationship norms for everyone. It's one thing to tell people that you should act professionally at work, but please don't project your marriage onto others.

MetallicCloud··on The Cost of Free Doughnuts: 70 Years of Regret
They said beer, not a beer. In Australia, the cheapest 6 pack you can buy is about $22.
MetallicCloud··on "Within C++, there is a much smaller and cleaner language struggling to get out"
As a primarily C++ developer, I absoloutly hate maintaining code that is written like this. C has it's place in the world, but despite the fact that the language has a large amount of overlap in syntax, they are very different languages. Trying to write one in the style in the other will, at least from me, earn you some very bad thoughts.
MetallicCloud··on Broken
I had the same issue. A bios update was what fixed it for me.
MetallicCloud··on Fridge Condenser Fans – Old and New [video]
I must have the same model Samsung fridge as you. Every 3 months or so I need to pull it apart and defrost the fan. It's super annoying and apparently very common in that model.

I don't think I'll be buying Samsung again.

MetallicCloud··on From video game to day job: How ‘SimCity’ inspired a generation of city planners
I've played a lot of Factorio, but I haven't played with any mods. Any you would recommend?

I am eagerly anticipating Satisfactory, which looks like a first person Factorio.
