McNutty··on SSD will fail at 40k power-on hours (2021)
I suspect that "industry-wide bug" in this context is simply Cisco pointing out to their customer base that this isn't Cisco's fault and please don't blame Cisco.
McNutty··on Ask HN: Cheapest and simplest solution for a daily email alert to myself?
If it really has to be cloud hosted then sounds like you could run your scripts in a VM in free tier of AWS/Azure
McNutty··on Ask HN: What tone to use in code review suggestions?
Neither of the first two nor anything else ending in a question mark unless you're really asking a question.

Not #3 because you're still being coy.

I'd suggest #4 or #5 when dealing with peers but they aren't interchangeable, they mean different things.

Save #6 for when you're giving tons of feedback to a junior.

If you're worried about being perceived as harsh or unfriendly, remember you can still be super friendly in the chatter on either side of the review session.

McNutty··on Electronic Catan LCD Tiles
I don't know much about the game (have played a couple of times) but I'm curious about the author saying that two neighboring tiles can't both have a high value, going into detail about how to overcome that problem... and then one of the sample photos shows two 10s neighboring?
McNutty··on Tunneling Wikipedia through WhatsApp to (maybe?) get around WiFi restrictions
If you know anyone still involved over there you should let them know about the Kiwix project!

>Kiwix is an offline reader for online content like Wikipedia, Project Gutenberg, or TED Talks. It makes knowledge available to people with no or limited internet access. The software as well as the content is free to use for anyone.

McNutty··on Ask HN: Are there any good poverty simulator games?
This was also the first thing that came to mind for me. It is very simple compared to what OP is perhaps imagining, but when I played it as a child the message definitely got through to me.

I can't open your link but no matter, after several decades I still fondly remember getting a job at the burger place (and smart-ass comments about "you can save 6 hours and flush those fries right now"), saving up and saving up until I could get better and better degrees and jobs, and finally ending up as the CEO of the bank or whatever.
McNutty··on Scapy: Low level packet hacking toolkit for Python
Does it work properly in python running in Windows?
McNutty··on Show HN: I made Ankify that converts notes to Anki cards
Feedback: I read the entire website and I still had to separately google what an Anki card is
McNutty··on Plane accidentally flew around the world (2018)
A thoroughly enjoyable read. At one point I caught myself holding my breath. Thanks for sharing.
McNutty··on Web Development for Beginners – A Curriculum
It strikes me as probably being a corporate directive rather than what the author might really want
McNutty··on Drones have transformed blood delivery in Rwanda
Indeed, why on earth should someone create a customised, paraphrased, personalised description of a 25 minute podcast just for you?
McNutty··on An illustrated guide to plastic straws (2021)
I think you've overlooked the keyword large in the opening statement
McNutty··on An illustrated guide to plastic straws (2021)
Personally I just drink from the cup. I never use a straw when drinking at home, I don't magically require one when not at home.
McNutty··on An illustrated guide to plastic straws (2021)
The point being made in the article is that plastic thrown into garbage cans in the US end up securely held in the sealed landfills as described, while plastics sent for recycling in the US end up getting exported and ultimately improperly dumped.

The author is saying that you should put plastics in the garbage rather than in the recycling.

McNutty··on Drones have transformed blood delivery in Rwanda
Indeed you maxerickson should listen to the specified podcast episode
McNutty··on Hey friends with kids. Tell me something positive about becoming a parent
TL;DR you can play video games with them (source: I read a dozen or so of the tweets)
McNutty··on AskHN: How to Disrupt Locksmith Industry?
If the problem is that you don't trust the locksmith from the Yellow Pages, then you might be interested in the home response service in my country from AA (what I think would be called AAA in America)

McNutty··on Muting your mic reportedly doesn’t stop big tech from recording your audio

Is it supposed to work on mobile/touch? Because if so I can't figure out the controls
McNutty··on How QR codes work, and what makes them dangerous: A computer scientist explains
QR codes, or 2D barcodes, are not dangerous. Visiting random URLs is dangerous. And the linked article agrees with that statement. Basically clickbait title
McNutty··on RFC 8908: Captive Portal API
Nice, has this been implemented by any of the major WiFi or firewall vendors? I see the authors have Apple and Google contact info, so fair to assume this will be baked into smartphone operating systems, but when?

I see 1 forum post on appple developers forum describing it as broken in IOS14. I see 1 forum post describing it as broken in Mikrotik version. I get no google search hits when combining the RFC number with the words "Cisco" or "Aruba"

McNutty··on What are some good resources to learn APIs?
I'm also a non-dev although I have a little Python experience, and I found reading the docs for FastAPI (a Python library to create API based applications) to be quite enlightening.

In particular the "Tutorial - User Guide" which walks you through creating a little app.

McNutty··on I Used Reddit and Crypto to Make $15,000 Doing Amateur NSFW Private Shows
My favourite part was when she said it was out of necessity because her only 2 options were doing this or living with her parents and having to commute 30 miles twice a week. Necessity I tell you!
McNutty··on WFH Policies – Based on anecdotal community feedback
Sigh. Every time a coconut with the 'you seem to think xyz' response based on a single brief comment with no mention of xyz
McNutty··on WFH Policies – Based on anecdotal community feedback
There is still too much confusion to draw proper conclusions. What I mean is that a lot of people who say they dislike working from home actually dislike the pandemic, the lockdowns, the lack of human interaction, and the associated stress and drama. They might be perfectly happy to work from home in normal times.

Also as a former hospitality worker, my sympathy for those whose jobs preclude WFH entirely.

McNutty··on Pro chefs debate cooking tips and tricks
I have lived in 4 countries and I've never heard of this method or this type of gadget before!
McNutty··on Not a lot of people know about Microsoft PowerToys
FancyZones utility is great, especially if you have multiple, large monitors
McNutty··on Ask HN: What on-call benefits do you get in your company?
Thanks to proper change process and redundancy of key infrastructure...maybe once a month there will be a serious problem that raises the stress levels. But most of the time it is stuff like short power outages or ISP outages for non-critical infrastructure.

We also have a good bonus scheme but you're not eligible for bonus unless you've done some on call time (amongst other KPIs) . So between all of that, people don't complain about being on call here! It is pretty easy to get a day covered by a colleague if it's your wife's birthday or something. Overall it's a great place to work for!

McNutty··on Deepfakes, can you spot them?
I want to help the computers learn, but I cannot bring myself to watch clips of politicians. Is there a version with movie actors instead?
