McNutty··on A Visual Guide to SSH Tunnels: Local and Remote Port Forwarding
Sorry but how is that different to what the blog post says?
McNutty··on Ask HN: What “special” app you are using?
https://www.drive.com.au/news/how-accurate-is-your-speedo-20...

Jeep Cherokee appears to be the exception here

McNutty··on Ask HN: What “special” app you are using?
Sounds like that would be useful when buying a house
McNutty··on Would you use 'Hacker News for books'?
Visit /r/books using old.reddit.com
McNutty··on Ask HN: What are some apps that feel like magic to you?
ImageMagick.

since you mentioned magic

McNutty··on Ask HN: What do you talk about in 1-on-1s with your managers?
My experience is positive. I have 1:1 with my manager fortnightly for 1 hour. I am not a remote worker but I am remote from my manager so don't have water cooler chats during the week.

We have a template that we go through to ensure that anything can be tracked and also so we don't forget to cover anything. We don't have to cover everything in each 1:1 meeting, it is a guideline.

Importantly, I can also reach out to my manager directly for ad hoc things at any time.

We don't talk about the same things that are discussed in standup.

We do talk about my overall current and upcoming workload, any issues with my KPIs and how manager can help, any new company policies, my training goals, manager's training goals, what my plans are to take annual leave, as well as a generic "anything to discuss" section.

Then if time allows, we also chat about other things besides work.

The meeting is scheduled so isn't interrupting anything, and can be shifted around the calendar if there is high priority work happening. However we try hard to reschedule rather than skip it.

McNutty··on Ask HN: Are Generated Passphrases Safe?
Often this doesn't meet the requirements for a password e.g. uppercase requirement. In that case I might use such a generator to get me started with some random words (more random than I'd come up with myself) and then mould it to fit the requirements before saving.
McNutty··on The 5GHz “Problem” for Wi-Fi Networks: DFS (2018)
Put simply there will be two aspects taken into account in the 5GHz Wi-Fi design.

Firstly, a coverage aspect of the design which will ensure that any given spot has a primary and secondary (and sometimes tertiary) AP radio providing appropriate RSSI.

Secondly, a channel plan that ensures that the DFS channels are not allocated to the primary and secondary radios. So if a client station's primary AP get taken offline for a minute by DFS then that station can immediately roam to the stable channel and maintain a decent RSSI.

Additionally, there may be some environments where the DFS channels are not enabled on the equipment at all. For example, many cheaper devices (think low end android phones) don't support DFS channels at all, so if there are many such devices in the area (e.g. College campus populated by poor students) then every radio running a DFS channel is effectively a coverage hole and therefore better to not use those channels at all.

obtaining the govt certifications for using DFS channels does add to the cost of the chipset so cheapest chipset simply don't do it.

McNutty··on The 5GHz “Problem” for Wi-Fi Networks: DFS (2018)
As a Wi-Fi networking engineer who often scratches his head at a lot of the software posts on HN, it is super fun to be on the other side and see the types of comments being thrown around by you lot.

Also FYI you can rest assured that if you've engaged a semicompetent Wi-Fi professional to design the coverage in your office/campus/warehouse/etc then you don't need to worry about "the DFS problem" as it is well known and will have been accounted for in the design.

McNutty··on New Zealand passes legislation banning cigarettes for future generations
Vapes will be covered in other legislation related. This isn't the only move the govt is making.

> It will be accompanied by a slew of other measures to make smoking less affordable and accessible, including dramatically reducing the legal amount of nicotine in tobacco products and forcing them to be sold only through specialty tobacco stores, rather than corner stores and supermarkets.

McNutty··on I drink before I interview
I got my first job in IT thanks to a bit of Dutch courage. It allowed me to go and talk myself up to the manager that ended up hiring me.

The difference with my story is that this was at a recruitment event and the beers were supplied by the employer for all the attendees, but nevertheless yes I can relate.

McNutty··on New Zealand plunges into recessionary spiral
You've had multiple replies, but I think that one key piece of information missing from all of them is the fact that you could move between floating and fixed. In your example you might see rates going up and you'd decide to change from the floating rate to a fixed rate for a term of 1-5 years. A few years later you might go back to floating. You might also have your mortgage split up into 2 or 3 tranches with 1 floating and 1or2 fixed at different rates. You can move from floating to fixed at any time, but you can only from fixed to floating at the end of the fixed term (or earlier by paying the bank a break fee)
McNutty··on Netflix Starting from $6.99 a Month
Seems OK. Cheaper service for those on a tight budget who can pay a bit with their eyeballs. Normal service remains available.

Can I ask what you're using Beyond Compare for, that you can't get from VScode etc?
McNutty··on Innernet: A private network system that uses WireGuard under the hood
IIRC, what you suggested is exactly how zerotier implements it
McNutty··on The Big Bang should have made cracks in spacetime–why haven’t we found them?
Utter nonsense.

McNutty··on Innernet: A private network system that uses WireGuard under the hood
As mentioned in the comparison sections, other products use security tags to achieve this. So I'm assuming that it isn't supported except by relying on external firewalls.

Also interesting to note no mention of zerotier anywhere in the doc or comparisons

McNutty··on Countersteering
I really feel like when a motorcycle is travelling at greater than 30 40 or 50 kph, countersteering is the only way to steer. But doing it subconsciously and doing it with knowledge on the subject are 2 different feelings.
McNutty··on Countersteering
Twist 2 is available for free on YouTube. Filmed decades ago but motorcycles are still mostly the same.
McNutty··on New Text and Array Functions for Excel
For me personally, these new text functions will be great for working with IP address, MAC address, FQDN, and URL

There are already ugly, kludgey ways of doing it (or doing it outside of Excel altogether) but this will be faster and more elegant

McNutty··on I finally tricked myself into waking up at 5:30am
I didn't see my trick mentioned yet: add in a sunrise app to the mix. I can wake up easier in midwinter now, because there is a simulated sunrise beside my bed that starts 20 minutes earlier than my audio alarm. You can also do this with smart light bulbs but the phone light works well enough for me.

The apps I use are Gentle Wakeup for the sunrise feature and AMdroid for audio alarms with "missions" as OP puts it.

McNutty··on The Guys Tracking the Absurdly Short Private Flights of the Rich and Famous
Hate to defend the uber rich but

Article does not seem to take into account that the service tracks the aircraft and not the person? Or that sometimes aircraft move between airports for maintenance/service reasons. Or that Mayweather might actually co-own the jet with a couple of other people?

Now I'm not saying that any of that occurred or did not occur. I'm just pointing out that the author didn't even consider these things.

yes I'm aware that occasionally they can prove the person a la Jenner Instagram

McNutty··on $9.99/month
Unusual in terms of total world population, probably not.

Unusual in terms of HN readers, I'd think most people here have at least 1x video streaming service at home.
