MaxwellKahn··on Earning the privilege to work on unoriginal problems
I read the article as a general philosophy to spend more time on the product instead of premature scaling optimization. If e2e testing + ci/cd is cheap/easy and helps in your situation, then that's what you should do.

I feel the author is more criticizing the CTO who prematurely decides to rewrite the infra to handle scaling to millions of concurrent customers before they have those customers.

MaxwellKahn··on Crypto Startup Bankrupt After Losing Password to $38.9M Crypto Wallet
I was super paranoid, and bought one of these metal stamping tools(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZFB5J15), and made my condo neighbors angry for one evening :) but hey, completely airgapped!

Even with multisig, each individual key holder has to manage their device, and the steel backup for that device. And there exists possibility of collusion between n of m of the multi sig holders against the other holders. Seems like it would still keep me up at night (though with SVB, standard bank accounts are starting to look shaky too).

Having not worked for a crypto company, curious what the standard best practices are for securing the "keys to the kingdom" (literally).

MaxwellKahn··on Factorio: Space Age
I might give it a try, what do you especially like about this mod compared to others?
MaxwellKahn··on Show HN: Full list of ChatGPT Plugins and stats
Hey hao1300, this is kinda cool for finding new ChatGPT plugins.

That said, how are you scraping the results for this? I'm curious how you determine which plugins are the "most popular".

MaxwellKahn··on Factorio: Space Age
I loved Factorio, but only played vanilla.

I find that every time I mod up a game (e.g. Fallout 3, NV, 4), I find the bugginess and lack of consistency just inevitably ruins it after a few cheap thrills. So I wasn't about to do that to Factorio.

I'm super excited for this expansion--I miss the days playing til 5AM with my friends (and we all have work the next day at 9AM), because we literally couldn't put the game down. Brings me back to childhood.

MaxwellKahn··on Fewer university students are studying Mandarin
As an American born person with some Chinese heritage, it's interesting to see this trend play out in myself alongside wider society.

When I was growing up, my parents and relatives would constantly try to convince me to learn my ethnic language, half to know my roots and half to catch the "China train".

In university, I took it upon myself to take Mandarin courses for several years, but only got to middling competency.

Now, as the years go on, I find that once innate desire to "one day learn Mandarin" gradually fade away. In terms of usefulness: - it seems less and less likely that I'll ever live in China for a significant length of time due to all the common reasons others in the thread are mentioning - I have many international Chinese friends, but our friendships are based on cultural affinity rather than linguistic affinity, so they're perfectly fine switching to English whenever we need to talk about something complex.

It's interesting, but many of my American peers of Chinese heritage are actually learning Korean or Japanese, which would have been extremely rare 10 years ago.

MaxwellKahn··on OpenTF announces fork of Terraform
I'm hopeful on this news. Terraform has become the standard in the industry, but incentives weren't quite aligned. My attempts to submit Pull Requests for much wanted features (fully working documentation with new integration tests all passing) often took months-a year to be accepted and merged.

Hashicorp engineers were incentivized to work on features related to Hashicorp paid services, and Hashicorp competitors who would similarly benefit from a stronger Terraform codebase were disincentivized from potentially helping Hashicorp.
