Maximus9000··on The Long-Term Stock Exchange Opens for Business
Me too. According to the wiki page:

> Operating principles: In an earlier SEC filing, LTSE said that its corporate governance rules might include: increased voting rights for shareholders who hold company stock for long periods of time, restrictions on offering short-term incentives to executives, disclosure of impact of any stock buybacks, and requiring companies to have a board-level long-term product and strategy committee.

It's a good point. Does it go both ways?

What if Sarah spoke at a women's only conference. At this conference, it's not just a "bias" towards women speakers, it's a downright rule.

How do we regard Sarah's experience here?

Maximus9000··on Is Cheese Bad for You? The Evidence Says No – With Some Exceptions

Well, that's a fairly dangerous exception, no?

Maximus9000··on Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life
> Cambridge Analytica was able to gain access to large amounts of data that people had created while using Facebook as it is intended to be used.

That's debatable. CA either bent the rules or broke the rules to get a lot of that info. In many cases, CA was able to get not just the target's info, but all of their friends info too. Facebook was either incompetent or complicit in allowing this to happen.

> Even if no one was being tracked, the exploitation could have occurred.

What do you mean? How could CA work without any data?

Maximus9000··on Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life
> People have been raising flags about this for literally decades now and the other shoe has yet to drop in any kind of meaningful way.

Cambridge Analytica?

Maximus9000··on Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life
> Right, so, has Google done this?

Business is booming for Google right now. Imagine Google still have all of that data but are slowly going bankrupt and desperate for new business ideas.... and then Google is approached by a company with ethics and practices like Cambridge Analytica?

Maximus9000··on How China’s Expanding Fishing Fleet Is Depleting the World’s Oceans
> Most people in society like meat so it makes sense we subsidize it. This is progressive.

So, we should subsidize things that people like? Should we subsidize sugar?

Most Americans are eating far more meat than doctors recommend.

Maximus9000··on How China’s Expanding Fishing Fleet Is Depleting the World’s Oceans
> Animal husbandry is a great way of converting inputs unfit for human consumption (animal feed) into something that is (meat) but it’s never very efficient.

Ideally, yes. In practice, we feed animals mostly things that we ourselves could eat ourselves - like corn, soy, and grains. Sure, you can find cute examples of cattle eating grass on rocky soil... but around 99% of animals are not grown that way... they are grown in factory farms where they're fed soy, corn, and grains.

> The nuclear family is an American white cultural norm.

See this UN paper [1] regarding stats on the nuclear family. The nuclear family is a phenomenon that exists on all continents. It's not the only way, but it's certainly not a "white" thing. The nuclear family is actually most prominent in Northern Africa. See figure 10 on page 19.

> Is it to avoid your ISP collecting browsing data off you and selling it? Perhaps using 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 as your DNS might be good enough.

Wouldn't your ISP still see what IP's you are visiting? Then, your ISP could just reverse DNS that IP to get the domain name, right?

Yup, same here in Canada - can't get yeast anywhere. Even flour is tough to come by despite the fact that Canada has tons of wheat - the flour mills are working overtime.

Maximus9000··on Counterintuitive things that helped me fix my insomnia
One counterintuitive piece of advice I can offer is to take a cold shower right before bed. Some might think a cold shower would shock the system so much that your body would be on high alert... but that's very temporary... and when you slip into your warm bed sheets afterwards, you feel like your in a safe place.

Your milage may vary. I've seen conflicting science on this. Here is the positive case: https://www.sleepadvisor.org/showering-before-bed/

I too am pro-nuclear, but isn't it too late for traditional nuclear to save us? We need solutions very quickly and the typical nuclear power plant takes 10 years to build.

In my uneducated opinion, the only way I see nuclear working is if there are small modular reactors that are produced quickly in a factory assembly line.

Maximus9000··on Mozilla Wants Young People to Consider ‘Ethical Issues’ Before Taking Tech Jobs
I sort of agree... but I do think its worthwhile thinking about best practices around ethics and writing them down somewhere for all to see.

The GDPR does a decent job in this regard around privacy and data use. Can we write a similar document to GDPR around other ethical concerns?

Maximus9000··on Mozilla Wants Young People to Consider ‘Ethical Issues’ Before Taking Tech Jobs
> I don't think many people outside the valley believed that about FB ever

The main stream media had some very glowing reviews of facebook during the 'arab spring'. Glowing articles were written about how these wonderful social media platforms help organize people to start revolutions like the arab spring.

Maximus9000··on Mozilla Wants Young People to Consider ‘Ethical Issues’ Before Taking Tech Jobs
It would be good to get some concrete bullet points of what's ethical and what isn't. Is it ethical to work for Netflix knowing that some people might be wasting their life on your platform?
