Mauricebranagh··on Updated Concept of “The Surgical Team”
This is based on real world surgical practice
Mauricebranagh··on Updated Concept of “The Surgical Team”
I think in our industry this is normally called CPT (Chief Programmer Team)

I have worked in teams like that and the idea is the Chief and developers do the development - though normally individuals can have multiple roles in smaller teams.

The chief Programmer is a hands on role as I see it.

With the Right Team its great - developers that obsess about leetcode scores arenot going to be a good fit

If you hit that you normally salary sacrifice pension to drop you out of that.

Also the UK has very generous matching for pensions

Dull doesn't mean you can half ass it - I worked for telco billing systems and getting it right to the penny is important.

It is if you take the US health insurance cost and compare it to the uk employees NI.

And UK has 20k PA ISA allowance (put 20k beyond tax) and a 12.3 k CGT Allowance and we don't get crucified on employee shares, if my EMI shares vest I pay no income tax and 10% CGT

"moral floor for compensation" sorry there is no old man on a white cloud that's sets "moral" rates.

And you might not know this but "charities" & "ngos" are notorious for bad pay and working conditions

Mauricebranagh··on Game developers sharing their salaries on Twitter
Rubbish week on week no one can sustain more than the average work week.

Welcome to capitalism for some areas the rate for the job is $200.

Its not societies job to manipulate the job market so some ones hobby me to "startup" becomes viable.

Its the same with mc jobs as a tax payer I am happy to subsidise nurse, doctor training but not subsiding a MacDonald's franchisee's business

Mauricebranagh··on Writing books is not really a good idea
Which is why there are page long descriptions of horses and carriages in the count of mote cristo.
Mauricebranagh··on Royal Marines Testing Out Jet Suits [video]
You know most of SV was built on military tech requirements and its not "murder" if its a navy assaulting an enemy ship.
Mauricebranagh··on Royal Marines Testing Out Jet Suits [video]
I assume this is for stealthy / assaults eg pop up at the last minute where you also have other assets that can suppress the target.

And assaulting via a small boat is going to be a larger target and slower and harder

Mauricebranagh··on The Lives of Napoleon
Well the fact that the UK bankrolled aka bribed a lot of the collation against France is well known.

Years ago I was at first Tuesday in London and thought that VC looks just like that Napoleonic bankers portrait that in all the history books - looked down and the name badge was "Rothschild" .

Mauricebranagh··on The global chip shortage is starting to have consequences
Yes - it was obvious that the pandemic had a finite life and the that demand would re bound.

Sounds like accountants who know the cost and not the value of things over ruled the production engineering teams who should have accepted the one off cost to stockpile.

Mauricebranagh··on Why do we buy into the 'cult' of overwork?
From (UK/NHS) experience handoffs are done I have certainly seen it when I have ben in hospital.
Mauricebranagh··on Ask HN: How to attract perm Snr Engs when the contract market is so lucrative?
Who ? you mean the ghastly rip off body shops?

I think you may have misunderstood what we are talking about real self-employed contractors vs FTE's

The 2-3x salary is the actual cost to an employer of a FTE (full time employee).

Mauricebranagh··on JavaScript for Shell Scripting
More like Jeremy Clarkson hitting thing with a hammer instead of the right tool for the job.
Mauricebranagh··on JavaScript for Shell Scripting
Or even Perl - I have only done some scripts in Python to use beautiful soup, or for scripts that may be used by less experienced developers.
Mauricebranagh··on Amazon Fake Reviews Scam Exposed in Data Breach
Often I will use amazon for research/discovery and might actually buy direct from another site which has a better price - gear for music in the UK for example.

You also can tell low quality products for the poor English/Grammar and knockoff similar brand names.

Amazons search really sucks quiet often a long tail search term will return product that in no way matches searcher intent.

Mauricebranagh··on How pharmaceutical companies find sick users on Facebook
For some specialised conditions in the UK - they actually do prescribe exactly the brand/version.

For my posttransplant meds some of the are explicitly "must" be this version. Also some meds (anti rejection) are dispensed direct from the hospital

Mauricebranagh··on Ask HN: How to attract perm Snr Engs when the contract market is so lucrative?
An employee at 160k costs a lot more than 190k - you can multiply by 2-3 to get the actual cost.

BTW at bleeding edge R&D labs the OH rate can be 500 -600%

Mauricebranagh··on How to survive a toxic workplace and how to avoid creating one
1 File a written grievance against the other team member 2 File a written grievance against the guy you reported it too.

If its assault call the police and tell HR fire them and ill drop the charges "maybe"

Mauricebranagh··on Ask HN: How to attract perm Snr Engs when the contract market is so lucrative?
Your underestimating how much the OH head costs of employees is.
Mauricebranagh··on Ask HN: How to attract perm Snr Engs when the contract market is so lucrative?
Triple is the UK rule of thumb.
Mauricebranagh··on Nuclear reactions are smoldering again at Chernobyl
I did wonder if dumping waste in subduction zones has been looked at.
Mauricebranagh··on Ask HN: How to attract perm Snr Engs when the contract market is so lucrative?
Depends on which country US Contract Rates are derisory when compared to the UK
Mauricebranagh··on Is this what enterprise means?
Even in simpler days 1980's when the CFO brought an off the peg Accounts receivable system, that caused problems with the billing system I worked on.

Eventually the system started writing broken BACS tapes and I had to fix the 6-7 months backlog of direct debits.

Neither the Company Secretary or I got even a thank you for fixing the problems.

Ok I did put Jack Scofield's (prominent uk tech journalists) bank account into the red :-)

Mauricebranagh··on LSD, cargo shorts and the fall of a tech CEO
Yeh my thought too there's a lot of shady shit that goes on in the VC world.

I think he could have done with advice from a mentor who wasn't at all involved with the vc side - even on how formal meetings like board should be run.

He is right about different cultures around how meetings are run though.

Mauricebranagh··on Berkshire Hathaway’s stock price is too high for Nasdaq computers
You don't need a share price of over 400k to do that.
Mauricebranagh··on Berkshire Hathaway’s stock price is too high for Nasdaq computers
Even more so given his comments on robin hood.
