Master_Odin··on A Quarter Century of Mozilla
For me, it was that when Chrome came out, it was a good deal faster and more efficient. It took FF a very long time to close that gap all the while watching them chase other dead ends.
Master_Odin··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
I think a number of hands on vocational jobs will last longer than quite a few white collar jobs. The robotics necessary for those jobs is quite far behind where we are with the necessary software.
Master_Odin··on Dropping the SAT requirement is a luxury belief
None of these (and other) schools view endowments as something to spend. It must always be growing to show how amazing and great the school is.

I remember how during the pandemic there was a number of articles about how these schools might have to take out some small pittance of the endowment to fund certain things and the schools were all doom and gloom about it.

Master_Odin··on Google stopping coding competitions
From my perspective as a maintainer in a project that's been in GSoC last 5 years, I'd be way more concerned if Stephanie Taylor was laid off (and she hasn't yet) as she's been the absolute face of it on the mailing lists and point of contact into Google.
Master_Odin··on DuckDB – An in-process SQL OLAP database management system
There was a bug that was recently fixed in node 16.17+ that was causing hard node processes crashes when doing stuff with S3 and I think had to do with receiving multiple packets at once or something.
Master_Odin··on Alphabet’s Profit Falls 34% (fourth consecutive drop) Amid Ads Slowdown
It certainly feels to me like a lot of tech companies believe there's infinite growth in every domain.
Master_Odin··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Can't wait for Musk to go against the FAA for requiring this info be publicly announced and not restricted time wise. He also probably won't affect any account(s) that publish this information so long as it doesn't affect him personally. You know, free speech as approved by Musk and all.
Master_Odin··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
It's doxxing if the info was not meant to be public, but was leaked via some source unintentionally. It's not really doxxing if you take info that's broadcast to the public by law and use that. I put out my resume that has my name, address, and phone number on my public website and I wouldn't consider it doxxing if someone uses that info.

If Musk doesn't want to get tracked, he can take a regular airplane like other people, or maybe borrow a plane from someone he knows, and not use one that's registered to his business.

Master_Odin··on A Message from Lunny on Gitea Ltd. and the Gitea Project
Except the community never really owned them, it was only Lunny who did. He could have at any point used his ownership of these things against the community. The situation hasn't changed much in that regard except that I guess everyone trusts Lunny the person more than this ltd he's created.
Master_Odin··on GitHub Copilot investigation
If this is MS trying to pull off EEE, what does the extinguish phase look like? That they try to make it so that any codebase the uses copilot is owned by them, and that there's no way to turn it off because all other editors or code hosting sites will exist? Plausible I suppose if they play the game for several decades and somehow no one else produces any innovation in the space.
Master_Odin··on Musk admits he announced Hyperloop to get California’s high-speed rail canceled
And he's pushing stuff like the Boring Tunnel that's in Las Vegas which is such a downgrade from trains. They can transport a few thousand people per hour, but also still suffer from traffic congestion, orders of magnitude worse than rail systems overseas, or something like MTA in NYC. No one should be paying attention to his suggestions for public transportation.
Master_Odin··on A remarkable kid has died in Newcastle, Utah
Within this comparison, will the various children of Musk or Gates or Buffet be as memoriable as their parents, or will they end up like the Kennedys, where yeah they exist and probably have a bunch of money, but they're "not important".
Master_Odin··on The Protobuf Language Specification
I think the hope is that this could be a situation like CommonMark and Markdown, where google's implementation will continue to exist, but that the community just totally moves over to this new specification / tooling, and that anytime someone says "protobuf", they don't even necessarily realize that Google has a thing, they just know this specification.
Master_Odin··on The Protobuf Language Specification
A large corporate sponsor that has done a terrible job of shepherding the protocol, maintaining docs, etc. I'm all for a community push to divorce the protobuf specification/implementation from Google and to have it be much more community maintained, as it's clear that Google doesn't seem to care to.
Master_Odin··on StrictYAML
Only if you use a yaml 1.1 parser. Yaml 1.2 changed the behavior of how booleans are parsed, but it's only been 13 years since it was released, so I get why people might not have migrated to it yet.
Master_Odin··on Ask HN: Why is everything in JavaScript changing so fast?
The python packaging story is a huge wart on an otherwise stellar language. I do wish poetry (or pipenv) would be blessed as the way, or they'd accept PEP-582. However, as an observer, they're trying super hard to be totally BC and it's just prolonging the pain, especially as you compare python against other interpreted languages like node or PHP.
Master_Odin··on An engineer’s tips for writing documentation devs love
Having used a handful of dev nodejs Google docs in the past few weeks, at this point I can only assume that aggressively hate the devs trying to consume their stuff. Their docs (and examples, and TS types) are often out of date, missing details (eg missing docs on accepted parameters or even whole functions), and just require more codebase reading across multiple libraries to deduce usage.
Master_Odin··on Public Travis CI Logs (Still) Expose Users to Cyber Attacks
This isn't surprising that the service continues to go downhill. The writing was on the wall when they got bought in 2019 and most of the original team left.
Master_Odin··on As professors struggle to recruit postdocs, calls for change in academia
Fair number of the CS PhD students I knew while I was there were not good coders, with professors being even worse at it. There's no incentive to write good code, just that it "functions".
Master_Odin··on Jabra denies support for Elite 85t Bluetooth earbuds on computers
I've the same headphones, and the two problems I've had with them were: 1. Mic auto-muting during meetings. The fix here was to disable automatic mic gain or whatever 2. Headphones not always properly playing music from my phone when also being connected (but not used) to my laptop. Fix was to turn off Bluetooth on my laptop.

In both cases, it seems to be purely an issue with macOS and Apple software, as I've never had a single issue when using windows or my Android phone. For the second issue when I researched it, the conclusion was that apple just regularly does poorly with BT devices connected to multiple sources as why would you use something other than your apple product?

Master_Odin··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
And even within that single country, each state and hospital then has their own requirements around EHRs. This ends up being my biggest issue with EHR is that you need to support infinite flexibility for all the unique snowflakes that exist. I'm convinced healthcare would improve in this country if the federal government standardized all of this to a single setup. This also includes the mess that is EHR in EMS.
Master_Odin··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
My GF is a nurse and I've heard her talk about working a number of 12 hour shifts and not having the ability to go to the bathroom, get water, or have lunch, all because of how strapped the unit is and arduous the requirement is to do these things (usually having to leave the unit). I'm honestly shocked we're not hearing more mistakes, and it should be 100% hospital admins on the chopping block for forcing these insane work environments upon nurses while expecting quality patient care.
Master_Odin··on Kaspersky is declared a US national security threat and is banned by the FCC
Yeah, I remember when the US government took Apple to court to get them to allow FBI to have a backdoor through the encryption and Apple did not capitulate, though the cases were eventually dropped. While US agencies certainly do crooked things, they do not have the capacity to force companies to do stuff under threat of violence and otherwise that Russia does with Kaspersky.
Master_Odin··on How to take credit for someone else's work on GitHub
Doesn't changing the author affect the commit sha? If so, doing this would cause some amount of pain with syncing all copies of the repo, branches, etc, making it a non-starter I think.
Master_Odin··on Self-obfuscating value objects in PHP
You can use phpcs <https://github.com/squizlabs/PHP_CodeSniffer/blob/master/src...> to easily do this.
Master_Odin··on An Introduction to Deno: Is It Better Than Node.js?
Native esmodule loading has been a thing since node 12, almost 3 years ago. You just have to turn on a flag or use the `.mjs` file extension.
Master_Odin··on The dangers of high status, low wage jobs
The NYT has subscribers across the country (and beyond) as it covers broad US and world events. I doubt a local paper that principally covers local/state news will have that same reach.
Master_Odin··on “Open source” is broken
How many companies paid $0 for log4j2, and then got upset and bashed the authors of it when this bug happened for the cost it caused to their business?

People pay nothing for the software, but will expect paid quality support.

Master_Odin··on “Open source” is broken
I feel like a lot of this isn't that individuals are the ones who should be forking over money, but rather corporations who are making tens of millions or billions who rely on this stuff as a core to their stack, but do nothing to support the ecosystem monetarily.
Master_Odin··on PHP is worth learning and using
Comparing Rails to PHP is unfair given that one is a framework and one is a programming language. Compare PHP and Ruby or Rails and Laravel to keep things apples to apples and oranges to oranges.
