MasterYoda··on Ask HN: Technical forums that are not dominated by pedantry?
Im trying to learn web programing (html/css/js). Does anyone have any tips on alternatives forum to stackoverflow?
MasterYoda··on Ask HN: Technical forums that are not dominated by pedantry?
I would add

4. stackoverflow is user hostile towards rookies/newbies.

People and mods forget s that it is not easy when you are new and everything is new, you dont know exactly how things works, what to search for because you dont know the exact words etc etc. For someone new that wants to learn programing it could be very complicated to grasp everything. Even if it is a simple question or maybe stupid question for someone that is experiensed, an anwser could still be very useful for someone new to understand something and could dayes and weeks to finally figure it out by theself. Now people just downvote and closes questions supereasy and that could be very demotive to learn programming.

Ok if "experts" dont want to read all newbie questions, but there should be a tag or something you could click so peolple now this and dont just downvote and close so easy and so people that dont want to read those question can skip them and people that want to be more helpful and understand its a newbie question still can help before everything gets closed or whatever.

MasterYoda··on Cobra Maneuver
I did not Sweden was first to do the cobra maneuver with the Saab 35 Draken, fun. It is very impressive how little Sweden with SAAB have been able to develop stage of the art fighter planes. By exemple JAS 39 Gripen was the first 4th genereation fighter jet in the world, and many older fighterplanes set many records too.

I really like Draken, it is a beautiful plan. And I love this picture :D The timing and composition is perfect and I wounder what the person in the canoe thought haha.

MasterYoda··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
Gas prices had fallen back to the lowest levels in 3 months, but because of the sabotage, prices have gone up again because this has created uncertainty in the energy market.

The kremlin wants to deliberately destabilize Europe and make it as difficult as possible with a big energy crisis, so support and aid to Ukraine falls. And its going bad for putin and his war now so he is also desperate, just look at the crazy mobilization of 300.000 russian to the war.

The russians already know that these pipelines are dead and the export trough them will end and sabotaging them is very much in the russians interest because of the consequences and as we can see now increased energy costs in EU which benefits the russian agenda.

Some say its US because Biden talk. But both pipes was already closed. Nordstream 2 was never used and nordstream 1 was shut down by the russians. The US hade no reason because no gas was flowing.

IMHO its no doubt its the russians, they are the only one that gain from this, in their energy war against EU. They also have submarines in the baltic sea. And its shallow waters between Denmark and Sweden (just 11-18m) that big subs from other countries can not easy pass without getting noticed and a lot of traffic that make it risky.

MasterYoda··on President Putin has announced a partial mobilization in Russia
I really hope the russian/kreml/putin war against Ukraine will end in a epic failure for them. I also hope that frozen russian assets in west can be confiscated to build up Ukraine again, russia has to be accountable and pay for all madness and horrific things they have done.

MasterYoda··on Local simulation feature to be removed from all Autodesk Fusion 360 versions
I was thinking to test Fusion360 personal/home edition. But I have read something that all you do is saved in the cloud. Is this correct or can your things be save privately and locally only?

I also think that I have read something that anything you do with the free version is public available but that have to be wrong or I have mixed this up with some other software, or?

MasterYoda··on PiBox: a tiny personal server for self-hosting
Half OT, but... I want to have a backup on another site, at an family member. Like the 3-2-1 rule, 3 copies, on 2 different medium and 1 off site.

For the off site backup, I want a cheap solution and was thinking of an rasberryPi with an connected usb-hdd and then the rPi connected to a family members wifi-router that I could connect to over the internet and do my backups to.

My question are: 1 - What solutions are there to make encrypted backups to a rasberryPi from windows? I don't want to encrypt all files with encrypted 7z files and transfer them (it is an mess), but just to have a solution so I can choose the unencrypted files and folders and then the software encrypts them on the fly and transfer them over to the rPi.

2 - The optimal solution would be to have the rPi usb-hdd mapped as an network drive or similar in explorer. But would that be possible with the first requirement that all files must be encrypted on the fly? 1 is more important than 2.

3 - I have read that a rPi not can handle a connected usb-hdd because it will take to much power than the rPi can deliver. Does there exist an dongle or something that you could connect one or two usb-hhd to the rPi and the dongle is connected to the powergrid and gives the usb-hdd the power they need and then the dongle is connected to the rPi but only transfer data? Or is there any other solutions?

Sorry for maybe stupid questions. But I have no clues here, what to search/look for or even if it is possible. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I do :) And I think it is good and you could also use addons (like uBo) which is great. More should use it on mobile.
MasterYoda··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
Every time something is broken for me on a site it is because of an addon/extension, not because of Firefox. I beleave Firefox get much blame for broken sites when it actually is an addon that the user installed which is to blame.

I even have some vague recollection of Mozilla mentioning just this. Like 99% when something is broken it not because the browser but because some addon the user installed.

So test a site that you dont think works with the "troubleshoot mode" in Firefox that inactivate addons etc to see if it works then. And if it works, then figure out which addon it is that makes the mess and to blame.

MasterYoda··on Knots 3D – Learn how to tie over 150 useful knots
Does anyone have any suggestions for any good knots that can be used to tie coiled tubing together? I want to be able to easily tie the hose tightly and at the same time have a knot that can be easy to untie.

My problem is that when tightening the cord around the coiled hose, once I try to tie then the cord gets looser around the coiled hose and the coil gets "sloppy".

I saw a person do a good knot for this once, but unfortunately I didn't see how he did exactly because he did it so fast. When he first tightened it around the coiled hose, it stayed tightened and then he could easily finish the knot so it became permanent and it was easy to untie.

Any suggestions on any knot name I can look at that could be suitable? Thanks

MasterYoda··on Firefox's protection against fingerprinting
One workaround for the the wrong time is to add an addon that change your timezone.
MasterYoda··on Firefox's protection against fingerprinting
Sometimes resistFingerprinting can break some site, but rarely. But if it happens the addon "Toggle Resist Fingerprinting" [1] can be helpful to temporarily inactivate it with a simple click on an button. Instead of having to go to about:config and change "privacy.resistFingerprinting" to "false" manually.

MasterYoda··on Before Ships Used GPS, There Was the Fresnel Lens
Fun facts!?

The Swedish inventor Gustaf Dalén (1869-1937) invented many revolutionary systems for beacon lightning for lighthouses [1]. In Sweden those lighthouses was called "AGA-fyr" (AGA-lighthouse) after his company AGA and abroad Dalén-lights.

Some of the inventions was the:

- "Dalén Flasher" that made the beacon flash and that conserved 90% of the acetylene gas, and the timing between flashes also made so observers could differentiate between beacons.

- "Dalén Mixer" that gave lighthouses greater luminosity where acetylene and oxygen was mixed in specific proportions.

- "Sun valve" made so the lighthouse only was on during the night to preserve gas. It was a black body rod that was connected to a membrane and tree shiny rods. So when the sun shined, the black expanded and turned off the gas. When the Blockhusudden beacon in Stockholm, the first sun valve beacon in the world, was electrified in 1980, it was discovered that the sun valve had never needed to be repaired!

For this, he also got the Nobel Prize in Physics 1912 “for his invention of automatic regulators for use in conjunction with gas accumulators for illuminating lighthouses and buoys.”

MasterYoda··on Psst: Fast Spotify client with native GUI, without Electron, built in Rust
I guess much that did the first client light weight was because it was developed by Ludvig Strigeus. He devloped the very light and popular uTorrent client. Very early for Spotify they bought uTorrent AB, not for the uTorrent client, but because they wanted his skills and he was the person that developed the first Spotify client. A few month later Spotify sold the uTorrent client to Torrent Inc.

Ludvig Strigeus is a skilled developer and have got many awards, like the Polhem Prize which is a Swedish award for a high-level technological innovation or an ingenious solution to a technical problem. If I recall correctly, he is very good at writing very small and optimized c++ programs, but the code is very hard for others to understand and maintain. So I guess when Spotify become bigger and more developer needed to work with the code they needed a more "main stream" solution and had to abandon the first client.

MasterYoda··on Firefox 79
One thought, cant one reason to the difference when you checked be that Firefox is the active application and have focus? And do you maybe have any addons in Firefox? Extensions can give bigger energy impact, you can check that under about:performance. Anyways I think both have low energy impact even if safari happens to be abit lower. Personally I use Firefox on mac and can many times have 100+ tabs and it works without any problems.

It could also be mention that Firefox now use macos coreanimation that drastically improved Firefox battery performance [1]. So give it a real test again, Firefox is really awesome and needs all support :) We need bigger diversity among webbrowsers, not just chromium based.

MasterYoda··on We can't send email more than 500 miles (2002)
Haha, this was interesting. I posted the same story with more or less the same title a couple of month ago [1], and no one saw it and no comments. This time it got almost 1000 points and a lots of comments. What I think is interesting is how the same thing can get so different traction. Wonder what factors it is that makes a thing get traction and not?

MasterYoda··on Firefox Picture-in-Picture
I really like Firefox PIP, but it's not perfect yet. I have missed the "timeline" so it would be easy to jump back if I wanted to re-watch the last bit. But I have noticed now that if the PIP window is active the arrow keys works for that which is great and it's also possible change volume with up/down arrow. So what a most miss now is that the PIP window remember its size and position from last time. Right now (on youtube) different resolutions gives different window sizes.
MasterYoda··on Sweden: higher Covid-19 death rate while failing to collect on economic gains
Statistics is just statistics. Many compare Swedens death/capita to other countries figures and conclude it is bad. But this is in fact not a god measure at all because this figure dont account for how far the spread is over the population, Sweden is very different here. Because Sweden have been more open they are also far ahead of other countries and much more people have been exposed and got antibodies. Sweden cant simply be compared to others that are more in the beginning in the pandemic. Sadly media forget this.

The virus cant be stopped so sooner or later other couties must open up and then they going to get more death. Just look at Spain that open up now had to lock down a reginon now with 200.000. Saying Swedens way is bad right now is far to early to conclude, when the pandemic is far from over. We have to wait at least a year or two.

MasterYoda··on Webrecorder: Make an interactive copy of any web page that you browse
You could do that with the Firefox extension "SinleFile" [1]. It main purpose is to save a full webpage as one single html file with images etc encoded in the html file (no more messy html file + folder cluttering), very neat. There is also a variant that is a html/zip hybrid called SingleFileZ [2] that gets smaller saved file.

In the settings you could set so that sites you bookmark is saved and also link the bookmark to the saved file locally if you want to.
