Mars008··on Will vibe coding end like the maker movement?
And filaments. Different sorts and getting cheaper. Just got into printing. Today a lot can be done withing $1000. That's including printer.
Mars008··on A new California law says all operating systems need to have age verification
Next step will be reporting potentially unlawful activities.
Mars008··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
There is something that's not easy to scale: humans. Live concerts, performance, etc. They are local
Mars008··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
There is more to that, globalization. Now we have 8 billions humans. They are connected to the same infospace (internet) and share much more and more diverse content. Which means a lot more of emotional/interesting/helpful things. While each of them becomes less emotional.

Well, world changes dramatically. Connected old folks are like neanderthals in big city now. However not connected are still living locally in their minds. Youngsters are just accepting the world as it is. Nobody is amused by computers and cameras anymore. (at least in developed areas)

And with all that the worst is yet to come...

Mars008··on Will vibe coding end like the maker movement?
If anything it was just boosted with introduction of cheap 3d printers.
Mars008··on We're no longer attracting top talent: the brain drain killing American science
It's hard to tell. The Guardian is UK based, but for some reason the use word 'we'.

But actually China and India may be retracting some of their talents back. Unlikely many go back to EU/UK socialism.

Mars008··on MRI scans show exercise can make the brain look younger
If that was true athletes would be the youngest, mentally healthiest, and in many other ways better than average. But that's not the case if you look at them. My guess exercise is beneficial only to some level, after that it has a big toll on everything. Including IQ, mental and general health, and so on.
Mars008··on Show HN: I built a small browser engine from scratch in C++
> you could try to build a simple http server now

_simple_ http server is a few lines of code in Python. It's an easy way to add remote access to application. Just ask any advanced LLM.

Mars008··on Please don't say mean things about the AI I just invested a billion dollars in
The picture will be incomplete if we don't mention that those 'artists and writers' are using the results at scale.
Mars008··on Amazon cuts 16k jobs
> I always thought that a manager should push product vision at their own level, get and organize resources, and assess the talent as fairly as possible.

LOL, reality is very different. Manager first of all is working to keep his position, second to get promoted. Most of them. For keeping he need to become irreplaceable. For that they create kill zone around eliminating competitors. Working against those with brain, not promoting, giving negative reviews, creating 'cases', taking credits for others job. Making those who can leave. I've seen a lot of this shit. This creates a local depressive shithole. It can go for decades in monopolies and in low competition markets.

Mars008··on Cadova: Swift DSL for parametric 3D modeling
I'm pretty sure FreeCAD can be used the same way, ignoring its UI. Just with Python as a core language.
Mars008··on Cadova: Swift DSL for parametric 3D modeling
Looks similar to OpenSCAD:

Mars008··on Wayland Nvidia
Half a dozen of NVidia cards in more than a decade on on Win/Lin. No major problems so far.. I had to install / remove drivers manually but only because I needed exact versions for some other software. Intel on Win/Lin works fine too.
Mars008··on Show HN: AlgoDrill – Interactive drills to stop forgetting LeetCode patterns
> approximately equal the price of Opus tokens needed to build

this is probably not accidental.

Mars008··on Kroger acknowledges that its bet on robotics went too far
There are old, disabled, sick who rather by online than walk. Normally I walk about a mile to grocery store several times a week. But when sick Amazon fresh or whole food is the best price/quality/time option.
Mars008··on Human brains are preconfigured with instructions for understanding the world
> They are born knowing how to walk

Most animals know how to walk. They have pre-build 'knowledge' and start with it when they get muscles. The main difference is some species develop muscles before they are borne. Others don't, some can't even see. But as soon as they develop they can walk without even seeing how others do it. The same way birds can learn, or be trained to fly without seeing examples. They start flapping both wings in sync, this is pre-build.

Mars008··on Ilya Sutskever: We're moving from the age of scaling to the age of research
If I remember correctly after leaving OpenAI with a bang Ilya founded a company and attracted billions of $$ promising AGI soon. Now what?
Mars008··on Fara-7B: An efficient agentic model for computer use
> Why does Microsoft keep releasing models trained on synthetic data?

Why not? That's the way to go. In some domains the only way to go.

Mars008··on Ilya Sutskever, Yann LeCun and the End of “Just Add GPUs”
> When talking with non-tech people around me, it’s really not about “rational minds”, it’s that people really don’t understand how all this works and as such don’t see the limitations of it.

What are the limits? We know the limits for naked LLMs. Less so for LLM + current tools. Even less for LLM + future tools. And can only guess about LLM + other models + future tools. I mean moving forward likely requires complexity, research and engineering. We don't know the limits of this approach even without any major breakthrough. Can't predict, but if breakthrough happens it all will be different, but better than (we can foresee) today.

Mars008··on Ilya Sutskever, Yann LeCun and the End of “Just Add GPUs”
The price, power, and size. Make it cheap, low power, and small enough for mobile. One way to do this is inference in 4, 2, 1 bit. Also GPUs are parallel, most tasks can be split on several GPUs. Just by adding they you can scale up to infinity. In theory. So datacenters aren't going anywhere, they will still dominate.

Another way is CPU+ + fast memory, like Apple does. It's limited but power efficient.

Looks like with ecosystem development we need the whole spectrum from big models+tools running on datacenters to smaller running locally, to even smaller on mobile devices and robots.

Mars008··on White House rules out bailout for AI as bubble fears grow
He has no money
Mars008··on The Silent Scientist: When Software Research Fails to Reach Its Audience
> I don't want to be too harsh on the study authors

Well, I'll do it for you. There is much of attention grabbing bull*it. For example I've seen on LinkedIn study claiming 60% of Indians daily using AI in their jobs, and only 10% of Japanese. You can guess who did it, very patriotic, but far from the reality.

Mars008··on A.I. and Social Media Contribute to 'Brain Rot'
Have you seen sci-fi movies? It's all fake! And people are happy with this. Same here, it becomes annoying only after some time. Most didn't get to this point yet. By the time they get quality will be better, so like new again. After that even adults will have hard time telling apart reality from generated. Like little kids believe dreams are true.
Mars008··on Leaving Meta and PyTorch
Exactly, the only way to stay current is to keep doing something at least half time. The good thing it doesn't have to be the same as prev job. Just keep brain working and learning.
Mars008··on Helion: A high-level DSL for performant and portable ML kernels
Add to that it can be done only once by developers before distribution for major hardware. Configs saved. Then on client side selected.
Mars008··on Leaving Meta and PyTorch
> see an alternate reality, it helps to escape the bubble, for example, by spending time in a completely different culture

I'm at similar position now, need to make decision. The problem is after leaving IT world for a while it will be hard to get back. I'll have to change my life completely and discard all knowledge and expertise I have. That will be fun, interesting, eyes opening, etc, but no way back.

Mars008··on What Happened to Ukraine's Missile Defense
> Israel must by now have intercepted more missiles of all kinds then the rest of the world combined

Very unlikely more than Ukrane alone (unless you count fireworks from Hamas and alike). Iran just didn't launch this many. Besides they are less advanced.

Mars008··on AI scrapers request commented scripts
The question is who runs them? There are only a few big companies like MS, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic. But from the posts here it looks like hordes of buggy scrapers run by enthusiasts.
Mars008··on AI scrapers request commented scripts
Looks like it's time for in-browser scrappers. They will be indistinguishable from the servers side. With AI driver can pass even human tests.
Mars008··on PSF has withdrawn $1.5M proposal to US Government grant program
> It seems like a number of the "DEI is anti-merit discrimination" messages in this thread are overlooking how DEI work usually works.

It has two sides, one promoting, and one denying. Based on race. DEI activists are always talking about the first. How great it is. And never talks about second, to not to ruin the rosy picture. Just recently I visited a hospital in mostly white area. Inside it looked like african consulate. There are still DEI stickers on the wals. What they did they denied jobs to all white applicants.

Looks like Python foundation decided to promote exactly this. Well, you will not get a penny from me till you change the course.
