MarcScott··on Tank Body Problem
I think it was on the Astra launch site, they had a car racing game authored by codex. I played it once and was quite impressed. I played it a second time and realised that I could just hold down the accelerator, not bother steering at all, and beat all the AI opponents every time. The game was pretty but pointless.
MarcScott··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
It's probably more about encouraging participation in the event amongst women. There's probably a hundred male competitive cubers for every female cuber. Having it segregated means that stories like this find their way onto the front page of HN.
MarcScott··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
There's something wrong with symphony writing when an eight year old can do it.
MarcScott··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
No, there are a tonne of Apple users that aren't developers, that will probably love this. They'll currently be using paid subscriptions to OpenAI, but only via the web app, and will happily switch to using Apple Intelligence.
MarcScott··on Ask HN: Resources to get good at soldering?
1. Use a soldering iron that can hit 400, and use a needle tip

2. Use leaded solder - lead-free is a pain. If you're not doing this for hours every day, even without ventilation, you'll be fine.

3. Heat the pads you're soldering to, not the solder. I used to tell kids to hold the iron to the pad for a count of three, then feed the solder in.

4. Two additional tools I find helpful - a solder sucker and copper wick.

MarcScott··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
Not exactly in the the same class as PCBs, but I've had a lot of success with Codex and Claude producing Fritzing diagrams. I've even got a skill set up with Claude so that it follows my preferences with breadboard wiring, using bezier curves to avoid wires crossing. Also, if it can't find a component in the library, it's quite happy drawing svgs of its own.
MarcScott··on OpenAI says its AI went rogue and launched 'unprecedented' cyber-attack
Didn't HF use an open weights model running on their own hardware to solve the issue though? Sort of defeats that narrative and plays into one in which frontier == bad_guys and open == good_guys
MarcScott··on "Drawing" the Mona Lisa with GPT-5.6, Claude, Gemini, and Grok
Grok consistently draws images that, if I were its parent, I would refuse to put on the fridge door.
MarcScott··on Count Binface
Very briefly:

Farage received a "gift" of £5M. He didn't tell parliament about the gift, which breaks the rules. MPs or campaigning MPs need to declare gifts and donations, as there are strict rules on who you can receive money from. The media found out about the "gift", and Farage was going to be investigated. He resigned as MP for Clacton, which stops the investigation and triggers an election. I think his plan was for him to win again, and then be able to turn around and say "the people have decided, they don't care about gifts I get." However, all the other parties refused to stand candidates in the upcoming election. If Farage wins, then the investigation will start again. However, we have numerous comedic parties that will run in elections in the UK. Count Binface will challenge Farage. Farage won with something like 46% of the vote last time. With the negative coverage he's been receiving, and the option of sticking it to reform by voting for Count Binface, the people of Clacton might end up delivering a very embarrassing defeat for Farage. This is the country that voted to name a research vessel Boaty McBoatFace.

MarcScott··on Wow, if it's this easy in 1998, I bet it'll be even easier in 2026
I seem to recall I had a windows phone at the time, with a full keyboard. I could use OS maps on the thing, and although it didn't have GPS, it could get my rough location by tower.

My mate had an iPhone, and it had an app where you could pretend to drink a pint of beer.

MarcScott··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
I think this is an area where stricter regulation would be appreciated. Just needs an additional checkbox on the regular MOT forms, and all cars would be compliant within a year.

Additionally, car designers should leave headlights and indicators alone, unless they are making the vehicles safer. The first time I encountered an oncoming car with a horizontal LED strip between the lights, I had no idea what style of vehicle was oncoming.

MarcScott··on Why do LLMs freak out over the seahorse emoji?
If you really want to see ChatGPT get annoyed with itself:

> What NFL teams don't end in the letter s?

Claude did more or less the same thing but not quite as spectacularly.

MarcScott··on We are teen hackers from around the world who code together
I recently supervised a Hackclub Counterspell event at our office. I was there only in the capacity of being an adult in the room, for health and safety and safeguarding reasons.

The entire event had been organised by a single teenager, with mini workshops, hack time and a global show and tell.

Kids that attended were not only coders, but musicians and artists as well.

The whole event was amazing, with more pizza than I thought it possible to eat.

The kids produced some genuinely interesting games, learned some new skills, and had a great time socially.

I fully intend to support more events in the future.

MarcScott··on ChatGPT Pro
Anecdotally, as an educator, I am already seeing a digital divide occurring, with regard to accessing AI. This is not even at a premium/pro subscription level, but simply at a 'who has access to a device at home or work' level, and who is keeping up with the emerging tech.

I speak to kids that use LLMs all the time to assist them with their school work, and others who simply have no knowledge that this tech exists.

I work with UK learners by the way.

MarcScott··on In Praise of Print: Reading Is Essential in an Era of Epistemological Collapse
And it disproportionately hit the poorest in society the most. My kid had his own room to work in, his own computer to work on, and WFH parents to help him out. He was not, massively, negatively impacted.

In my work, I was in touch with families with multiple children at home, no computers, maybe one or two phones, and no broadband connection. The kids, for all intents and purposes, just lost two years of education.

MarcScott··on I Quit Teaching Because of ChatGPT
I'm thinking of going back into teaching because of ChatGPT.

I created an entire scheme of work for my wife today, including all the lesson plans, and next I'll work on some student resources and quizzes. It took about thirty minutes. She'll need to check them over to make sure they're okay, but still a massive time saver.

I've taken photos of my son's revision activities and had ChatGPT mark them. It's surprisingly accurate given his awful handwriting.

Report writing becomes a thing of the past, as I can upload a CSV of grades along with a sentence or two of description, and have it generate unique reports for each student.

This would all allow me to do what I used to love. I can just spend my time with students in the classroom, engaging them, teaching them, discussing with them. I won't be bringing home mounds of paperwork, that eats into my evenings and weekends. I'll go into work each day feeling fresh and ready to actually educate kids.

ChatGPT takes away the busy work from both teachers and students.

MarcScott··on Kris Kristofferson has died
Don't care that it was a bomb at the box office, I really enjoyed Heaven's Gate.

I also loved Convoy. My kids and I still troll my wife by including the theme song on almost every playlist we create.

MarcScott··on Ask HN: Platform for 11 year old to create video games?
You should definitely take a look at Struckd Studio which is now part of Unity Play - https://play.unity.com/en

It's still a little buggy in places, but nothing that can't be overcome.

You can drag and drop in 3D assets and many of them come with built in and easily changeable behaviors. Then there is a node based programming language that you can use to make alterations.

It's web based, but also has iOS and Android apps available for editing and playing the games.

edit - I'm an educator working in the CS ecosystem, and am playing with Struckd with the intention of making a suite of learning resources.

MarcScott··on Show HN: iFixit created a new USB-C, repairable soldering system
I didn't think lead, in it's metallic form, had a particularly high toxicity. I thought it was lead salts that were the problem.
MarcScott··on Vampires and Arithmomania
When I lived in PNG, fruit bats were fairly common. You could see them roosting in trees all over the place, and they are huge. They're harmless though, and a great source of protein, if you're any good with a slingshot.
MarcScott··on I got almost all of my wishes granted with RP2350

MarcScott··on Show HN: Pie Menu – a radial menu for macOS
Like me, you seem to like to drive your computer with the keyboard and use the mouse when necessary.

I use the Windows key to open applications on Windows, Cmd+Space on MacOS, and Mod+d on my i3 nixOS machine.

Some people like their mouse/trackpad though, and this seems like a useful tool for those that do.

MarcScott··on I am starting an AI+Education company
I was walking to my classroom last Thursday, and a kid pushed another kid down the stairs, right into me. I went ballistic, and sorted it all out, but there is no way an online AI tutor can deal with that kind of behavior. So if you want social education, you need physically present teachers. If you want online education, then parents are going to have their work cut out.
MarcScott··on I am starting an AI+Education company
> In my experience, most people, the world over, are in fact self motivated.

In your experience? The world over? Can you tell me your experience. I've been a teacher for a long time. I've worked in the UK, the USA, PNG, and Kenya.

The vast majority of kids in the developed world don't really care about education. A few do, and they get great grades. Most care more about social status, their cliques, or just surviving the jungle that is school.

School is important. It teaches you how to deal with other people. It teaches you how to deal with people in authority. You can't get that at home, in front of a screen. Learning stuff is secondary. I'm sure there are plenty of people here that are not working in whatever they majored at.

MarcScott··on I am starting an AI+Education company
I think teaching is one of the few roles that can't be replaced by AI. If you're a self-motivated learner, eager to gain new skills, then AI is perfect for you. Having a virtual Feynman coach you through a Physics course is perfect.

Most learners, the world over, are not self-motivated. The pandemic showed us exactly what children would prefer to do, when they don't have a physical teacher standing over them, which is bugger all. We send kids to school, in the hope they get some education, but the reality is that we use schools for free childcare while we work. If parents have to additionally monitor their child's learning, it breaks down pretty quickly.

I see AI being more of a teaching assistant, rather than a replacement for teachers. Having been in the education game for over twenty five years, I know the difference in impact when comparing virtual learning to in-person training.

MarcScott··on Why does current flow the opposite way from the electrons?
I fondly remember watching kids in physics exams trying to answer questions using Felming's left hand rule. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleming's_left-hand_rule_for_m...

You could watch them hold up both hands, wondering which one to use, then trying to dislocate their wrists as they aligned fingers and thumb with the diagram on the exam paper.
