Mankhool··on Ask HN: Startup School Europe: were invitations sent?
Does anyone have a link to the application for Startup School? What's the criteria for being selected to go?
Mankhool··on Ask HN: What does HN community think of new gTLDs?
I like them. Yes there are MANY, but it's cool. So far I have colour.house and color.house which are redirecting to one of my .com sites. It remains to be seen how these new gTLDs show up in search.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: How to engage users?
Apologies, but I read that as, "How to enrage users?" What a difference a letter makes and probably another good question for Ask HN!
Mankhool··on Why We Humblebrag About Being Busy
Busy ≠ successful.

Busy ≠ important.

Busy ≥ stressed.

Mankhool··on Ask HN: How do you find good developers on oDesk?
In my experience using sites like oDesk was too detached from any community I consider myself a part of. Speaking only about my first (and only) app development, I found my dev here. And when he had to move on I toyed with Reddit, but in the end came back here for FsF and found another exceptional person very quickly. Both of my hires were remote, but because they were part of HN that gave them credibility - because they are interested in "this thing that we do" and don't want the distraction of social or loss of time being on, FB for example, or being buried in the bureaucracy of something like oDesk. Just my 2 dirhams.
Mankhool··on Any company that specializes in basic (i.e. dumb/feature) cell phones?
http://www.johnsphones.com/ If I didn't have an employer paid for iPhone 5S with unlimited data THIS (or the N515) would be my choice.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: How did you choose the name of your startup/product?
I asked my SO, "What would you call an app that would let you connect instantly with anyone else using the same app?"

Answer: One Degree (as in one degree of separation between user A and any other user).

Yes others are using the name, but I liked it and I can change it later.

But I named my corporation after a street name in Dubai that I have always liked - Mankhool.

Mankhool··on Ask HN: What new gTLDs are available now and where should I buy them?
.house is in General Availability .consulting is in Sunrise This registrar and site has been very helpful to me: http://www.onlydomains.com/new-gtlds/launch-diary
Mankhool··on Toronto or Vancouver: Which is better for startups?
I'm in Vancouver and I would have to say . . . Toronto. The West is the Best, but for startups the East is the, er, Beast?
Mankhool··on Ask HN: How to get freelance clients without Elance, oDesk, and the like?
I think that "Offer HN" is a great way to get clients. It's how I found my first Dev (who is on this page!) to help me create an app that was better than anything I could have imagined - and I mean that literally because I imagined and designed X and he re-imagined and created X to the 10th power.

FWIW I have looked at eLance and oDesk and the like on more than one occasion and I find the process very tedious. I would much rather go to my Community first (HN, Reddit etc.) because it is, to me, more genuine.

Mankhool··on Ask HN: Are solo founders as screwed as they're led to believe?
I'm in the exact same situation as you. I have an App on iTunes since May 1st. I got there all by myself with a contract dev (a fantastic guy I met on HN!) and I'm the Chief Everything Officer. I want to keep bootstrapping as long as possible, but I would also love to be able to afford the talented people I need to continually improve the product and build a community.

Elwell's comment is apt. I need to obtain recurring revenue or at least be increasing my user base week over week (the app is free) in order to move forward. So that means I'm spending 80% of my time on marketing!

Don't go Co-Founder shopping - just get on with building the app and your business. Good Luck!

Mankhool··on Ask HN: How did you find Hacker News?
TechCrunch 1771 days ago. Before it became AOLCrunch. Sigh.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: I want to do a trial of Soylent – what do you guys want to see?
I thought this was a crazy idea - and I guess I still do, BUT I work with someone who has absolutely NO relationship with food - a married, middle aged woman with 2 grown children. Obviously for over 20 years she has cooked for them all, but she doesn't have a favourite food ANYTHING. It would be interesting to know how many others there are like her in the world because THIS is the audience that Soylent should be going after.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: How hard would it be to put a small satellite in orbit?
"A smaller 45-meter, 350 mm caliber gun was completed for testing purposes, and Bull then started work on the "real" PC-2 machine, a gun that was 150 meters long, weighed 2,100 tonnes, with a bore of one meter (39 inches). It was to be capable of placing a 2,000-kilogram projectile into orbit."

Mankhool··on Ask HN: single founders – how do you do it?
Great thread andkon. I'm essentially a single founder, but I have a contract dev and there is always so much to do. There is a lot of good advice here already, but to me, the marathon analogy is best. In other words, take the long view.

I know a man who built an engineering company up from nothing to a billion dollar exit over 30 years. I'm in week one of having my app available to the world.

Am I in a hurry? No. I have a long time to build a business. I cannot live or die each DAY/WEEK/MONTH based on users who joined, or users who left, or any other metric. Good Luck!

Mankhool··on Ask HN: How did you pick your lawyer or law firm?
I read an article on Techvibes written by a lawyer who is interested in working exclusively with startups and SMEs. His website has an online form for Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions quotes. It was very straightforward - you fill in some information about your startup and that's it. He called the next day and got more details. His pricing is great and he is flexible on payment terms for startups. So that's how I became a client . . . if you are in Canada PM me and I'll send you his info. He does incorporations too - although if again, if you are in Canada you can do a Federal Inc online for $200.

Downvoted? I'm crushed by that kind of response. Deleting now. Apologies. I'll post again next week. Thanks for this great thread.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: how do I promote on Hacker News?
"Show HN:"
Mankhool··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Yes it is. I'm a Media Asset Manager / Digital Archivist and there is no EASY way to collect metadata about people (from their name tags for example, that could hold name, company, title etc.) or environments.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Create an RFID and/or NFC (Near Field Communication) READER that can mount on a DSLR and dump read data into an IPTC field.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: What's the best domain you own that you aren't currently using?
thoughtministry.com
Mankhool··on HN Search updated
I was really missing SearchHN so thank you for all of the work you have put into this.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: How do you earn your money?
Working for any entity that you do not own can be perceived as making someone else (owners, shareholders, investors) rich.
Mankhool··on Google Tango and Oculus on standard iPhone

Mankhool··on Ask HN: Side Projects and Startups
Hi Amjad, it's a platform for geo-location based intelligence gathering. I have a job that affords me lots of free time while I'm at work so I probably spend 10-12 hours a week on it right now. While I wait for my dev to be free again I've built a landing page, blog, and have been ordering books on Amazon and doing a lot of reading - oh and thinking about who I might like to ask to be on my BOD.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: Side Projects and Startups
My side project just went into closed beta, so do I get to refer to it as a startup now? I think I will. I'm validating it with my inner circle and after a bit more dev will be in open beta for more validation and tweaking. PS: All my entrepreneurial pursuits in life have been "side projects" and will remain so until one gets some traction.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: Sci-Fi novels?
I'm ancient and have been reading Sci-Fi my entire life. I just finished "The Darwin Elevator" (1st of 3 in a trilogy) and it was the most refreshing SF I've read in a least 10 years.
