Mankhool··on California to list glyphosate as cancer-causing
Exactly. Eat at your own risk. Live at your own risk.
Mankhool··on Farmers Take Out Millions In Loans To Raise Chickens For Big-Box Retailers
Yes, but what is the quality? What have they been fed and injected with on their way to an assembly line that kills them at the rate of 200/minute?

Mankhool··on Startup School 2017 Presentations
I wish this were searchable. I mean, it's fun to browse but searching all of the teams for, "location" for example would be nice.
Mankhool··on Navigation Apps Should Have a “STFU” Feature
I think all apps that track you should have a "Turn Off Tracking" button. My app did. One button and you no longer turned up in search results (that showed a users location).
Mankhool··on Pirate Joe’s, Maverick Distributor of Trader Joe’s Products, Shuts Down
I live in Pirate Joe's neighbourhood. He's not running a Costco sized operation. It's a tiny little store. I wish I had 50K to fund his defense.
Mankhool··on Voc: a physical model of the vocal tract, written in ANSI C
This would have a large audience of voice and speech training professionals if it were available "ready to use" with no coding or compiling knowledge required. I think it's awesome!
Mankhool··on Weight Training Is the Best Exercise for Bone Strength
I'm in my mid 50s and haven't been in a gym in almost 4 months after being religious about weight training for 40 years. I really don't care if I ever do another workout in my life, but I know the importance of weight bearing exercise so I guess I will go back eventually.
Mankhool··on U.S. likely to expand airline laptop ban to Europe: government officials
Flying to North America from Europe? Please fly to Canada first and enjoy using your laptop onboard. Then take a short hop to your US destination on which you can also use your laptop since your flight originated in Canada.

Mankhool··on Show HN: Spotter – The first reverse video search tool
I manage original content for a global telco so I am your target customer, but I really don't want to have to sign up just to try it out.
Mankhool··on Exercise 'keeps the mind sharp' in over-50s, study finds
As someone who is in his fifties, and just took my first real break from the gym in 40 years (2 months off) I can easily say I don't miss it. I still walk to/from work, which is about a 12km round trip, 5 times a week.

And although I have considered never picking up a weight again, I know the benefits of weight bearing exercise and so, sometime this year, will go back to they gym, but less frequently and for a shorter duration.

And never forget that 50% of your health is nutrition.

Mankhool··on The Art of Hollywood’s Made-Up Languages, from Dothraki to Klingon [video]
I loved the books, like the show, but wish it had a bigger budget . . .
Mankhool··on The Mac Pro Lives
Isn't the article about the Mac Pro, not the Macbook Pro?
Mankhool··on Yes I Still Want to Be Doing This at 56 (2012)
I just turned 54 and started learning to code at 53. Okay, learning to code again because I haven't done anything since 1985 and FORTRAN77.

It's interesting because my employer (a multinational telco HQ'd in Canada) is keen to give me real work coding as soon as I want it. So with that, and my real purpose (building my next application myself) I'm really engaged and having a lot of fun.

Mankhool··on Video Pros Moving from Mac to Windows for High-End GPUs
I work in a video production facility. We hate the trash cans. 3rd party chassis for them all fall short of an "all in one solution". These are our last Macs for production. We'll be on Windows boxes by this time next year. As a lifelong Apple user (Starting with the Apple II) this makes me sad, but Apple has done this to themselves.
Mankhool··on Craigslist Is Ugly, Janky, Old School, and Unbeatable
I was looking at apartments in Vancouver, BC recently and was happy to see a Map View for searching now. With $381 Million in revenue in 2015 and about $300 Million profit it isn't going away.
Mankhool··on Ask HN: Is there a public database of plants?
Probably many. Here's a local one for BC. http://linnet.geog.ubc.ca/DB_Query/QueryForm.aspx
Mankhool··on How the White Cube Came to Dominate the Art World
Many years ago I met Ted Carter, owner of the Carter Gallery at 560 Broadway in New York and was pleasantly shocked by the walls there. They were a neutral grey - and fabric! It was an amazing way to see the art and nothing else . . .
Mankhool··on Parse is shutting down today
Cool. Thanks! I already let all my data go, but it will be great to get my app going again.
Mankhool··on Parse is shutting down today
As a non-developer who found Parse extremely easy to use, is there a similar product in the market that I can switch my iPhone app over to?
Mankhool··on Bose Hearphones
I have always used my QC20 noise cancelling earbuds in this way so I'm glad it will get better. Just last weekend in a noisy eatery I put them in and my SO and her friend thought I was listening to music, but I said, "No, now I can hear YOU". Cool.
Mankhool··on Hyperloop may become reality in Dubai
Yes, but it would be even more interesting as a closed loop from Abu Dhabi to Dubai to Al Ain to Abu Dhabi. That would be the ultimate transit system for the country.
Mankhool··on Apply HN: One Degree – Collaborative Intelligence
Google has come nowhere close to indexing the entire WWW. I'm changing some aspects of search that rely on relevancy and currency. The photo of a building that street view captured is obsolete the moment it was taken - let alone put on a server.

If someone needs fresh information, one of the ways to get that is to find someone local to where you need the information, to get it to you.

In this model there are Requestors and Collectors. It will all be free for the foreseeable future and then we will take a percentage from Collectors and perhaps set an annual access fee for Corporate clients. All that TBD.

Mankhool··on Apply HN: One Degree – Collaborative Intelligence
Ideal? To begin with, shutterbugs, instagramatics, whatever you want to call the always-hand-on-phone ready to shoot or text crowd.

The people gathering data locally are part of the group I just referenced - or anyone with a smartphone that will engage with a remote client to do an information gathering task for whatever price can be agreed. In this scenario, location and exclusivity of that location has value for the person needing information from it.

This isn't really about news, but in a world where the cost of maintaining a bureau everywhere is something that has to be considered, it could be used for on-demand assignments to users who want to be a stringer for any news outlet. The DPA http://www.dpa.com/ are keen to use this app once we scale because it lets THEM contact people close to wherever the news is.

Mankhool··on More phones, few banks, instability are transforming Somalia to cashless society
I'm very interested in finding out how to pay people in the third world as well as others with no bank account (10% of Americans don't have one). Please see if he will answer questions. I want to know how it works, how widespread it is in Africa, if they are rolling it out in other countries etc.
