MakeUsersWant··on The mystery of the 'legal name fraud' billboards
Free advertizing for whoever hacks up a game (and domain) first.
MakeUsersWant··on The Financial Industry Is Having Its Napster Moment
> They choose them for the same reason that people choose big consulting firms like BCG or McKinsey: status and affiliation, nepotism, internal power struggles, and cover-your-ass blame insurance.

There must be some lean way to exploit that.

In theory, you could manufacture status for your consulting firm. (So that's why BCG and McKinsey plaster German universities with their ads.)

MakeUsersWant··on List of Productized Consulting Services
Reply because I can't find your mail in the profile. Advanced Math consulting sounds like a job I'd like to work. I'm a pure maths postdoc turned data scientist, more info on request. Can you hook me up?
MakeUsersWant··on A teaching tool that measures how hard the brain is working
> When we learn something new, [...] We could overwork ourselves and not realize it. [...] It’s only when we show up for an exam [...] that we know if all that practice actually worked.

So that's why you have to shut the book and recite the study material.

MakeUsersWant··on The researcher programmer, a new species? (2012)
For what keywords should you search job listings?

(I happen to have a PhD in mathematics and decent programming experience. But while transitioning to private industry, I never came across this type of job or failed to recognize it.)

MakeUsersWant··on Eigenmorality
It's probably no coincidence that repeated prisoner's dilemna models another phenomenon: willpower.

George Ainslie argues in "Breakdown of Will" that will is actually the result of negotiations between past and future selves.

MakeUsersWant··on Loomio – Crowdfunding a better way to make decisions together
My pet peeve is projects that don't describe what they do. Thought process while reading:

> Loomio is a user-friendly tool for collaborative decision-making:

Piqued my interest.

> not majority-rules polling, but actually coming up with solutions that work for everyone.

Skeptical because it promises to get rid of office politics. I want to know specifics how and why it works. Cold, hard, game-theory and/or economics. Maybe there is something useful behind that marketing-speak.

> We’re a small team in New Zealand, and we’ve built a prototype that people are already doing great things with.

Total non-sequitur. I don't care who you are. Convince me why the product works before I invest more effort.

> Now we’re crowdfunding so we can build the real thing: a new tool for truly inclusive decision-making.

Ah, it doesn't work yet.

> Youtube video

Sorry, I'm not going to spend an hour of my time when you've already proved yourself a bad steward of the last five minutes.

Contrast this to xerophtye's comment: short, punchy explanation how Loomio works.

MakeUsersWant··on Gamification: The Key to Re-Engaging High School Dropouts
The article laments a disconnect between learning and work force skills. On the other hand, they claim a high school diploma makes $260k difference in life time earnings.

So what value does a high school diploma provide? What's the reason for the $260k increase?

MakeUsersWant··on Mistakes Programmers Make when Starting in Machine Learning
I've had good experience with reinventing the most important part of the wheel. If I try to solve a common problem myself first, I will gain insight into the pitfalls, so that I can make a better decision which pre-made solution to use.
MakeUsersWant··on A peek inside Exist, our quantifed self app close to launch
I don't quite see the problem this app is solving (beyond initial curiosity). Some wild ideas, not necessarily good ones:

* Everybody knows enough sleep is a good thing, but not everybody has a productivity chart to make its importance visceral.

* Provide early warning signs to rest before you get migraine. Common triggers are stress, hunger, fatigue, hormone levels (medication), indoor air quality and lighting. A common early warning sign is an unusual appetite. The facts are known, but their importance varies and not everybody is sufficiently self-aware.

* Automatic goal tracking for Beeminder, because that increases the chance you achieve your goals.

* Prevent procrastination: Is it possible to infer mood from your data, e.g. movement patterns, after some initial training? (The food industry can measure feelings amazingly well in their food design labs.) I know I'm much more likely to procrastinate when I'm low on energy. Right now, I'm trying to notice that earlier and take a break or fix the underlying problem.

MakeUsersWant··on How The Pirate Bay Plans to Beat Censorship For Good
> The “domain” registrations will be Bitcoin authenticated,

Wasn't there recently an outcry that Bitcoin transactions are identifiable, at least if your adversary collects enough data?

MakeUsersWant··on Letter From A Psychopath
> That is what gives away the fact of his psychopathy. In fact he is one of the worst forms of psychopath I think, which are those that actually believe what they are telling others about themselves.

I disagree: People who believe their own lies eventually get caught off guard by the discrepancies between their lies and life. That leads to their downfall.

MakeUsersWant··on It’s time for Silicon Valley to ask: Is it worth it?
Everybody is protesting.

But there must be huge business opportunities in mass surveillance. The biggest obstacle is politics, i.e. how to weasel your way to the data. Maybe an inexpensive stockpile of skill/personality/mental health profiles could make hiring/outsourcing more convenient? Better ideas, anybody?

MakeUsersWant··on Falsehoods programmers believe about addresses
Counterexample: the village Rutha (in Thuringia) seems to have only one un-named street. So its addresses lack the street name field.
MakeUsersWant··on How to Negotiate a Job Offer
Some companies fire people right before the shares vest. Then they really are worth $0.
MakeUsersWant··on Bill Gates Will Give You $100,000 to Build a Better Condom
>I care that it fits!

Many men don't maintain a constant level of hardness during sex. The condom fits great while harder, but slips off while softer.

So you are clutching the condom to make sure it stays on. Great usability, right?

MakeUsersWant··on The Ask: Don't Go Into a Meeting Without One
Don't go into a meeting without a clear purpose.
MakeUsersWant··on Why are payment forms so complicated?
Maybe you could add the predictable human irrationalities as an input signal. For example decision paralysis - I'd expect legit customers to take a bit longer for pages that require a decision. Or the way people react to discounts - a fraudster wouldn't care, but a legit customer would be happier and thus less a little bit less focused.
MakeUsersWant··on How to start working on side projects
<it>programmers for whom programming is a "passion"</it>

Beware of turning your passionate hobby into your job. It will become a chore. Also, you won't have a hobby anymore that keeps you from burning out.

MakeUsersWant··on College Degree Required. But Why?
Perhaps student debt feels good for employers because desperate graduates will accept any kind of treatment?

Please correct me if I'm beside the mark.

MakeUsersWant··on The morality of sperm donation
In Germany, a recent court ruling means it is impossible to donate anonymously. Another court ruling makes it impossible to get out of child support. EDIT: Child support only ends after around 5 years of university study.

I predict mail-order sperm or sperm bank tourism. Especially for high acheivers' sperm.

MakeUsersWant··on I got into YC after applying six times. Here's my advice for YC applicants
I read "how to get into YC" as a guide what traits will make me a more successful academic. After all, a fellowship is much like YC financing, except my high-risk project does papers, grants, networking instead of software.
MakeUsersWant··on In praise of failure: the key ingredient to children’s success
> and if kids of privilege have never experienced setbacks, they’ve never learned to persevere.

And this is why ordinary schools are harmful to the intellectually gifted: too low expectations don't provide opportunities to learn perseverance, resilience, and will-power from failure.
