MafellUser··on Low economic growth is a slow-burning crisis for Britain
>When it comes to growth, Britain’s politicians will the ends but not the means. They run scared of the homeowning elderly, who turn up to vote and make up a growing share of the electorate. So tax rises are heaped on businesses and workers instead, further harming the economy. The government has likewise watered down its plans for reforming the planning system—because elderly homeowners object.

Introduce an ageist voting system. Your vote is worth 1/(how many years you've been eligible to vote). I'm only half joking of course.

OTOH learning how to debug cmake will guarantee your employment for life so there's an incentive.
MafellUser··on Chalet: A cross-platform project format and build tool for C/C++
Best of luck with this project. Tooling is probably the hardest to migrate since literally everything depends on it and you can't really it parts by parts, also it is the classic if it doesn't break don't fix it.

Would be amazing if there's a script to quickly convert common mk files and cmake files into chalet format, that would absolutely help with adoption amongst legacy codebases.

MafellUser··on Citigroup plans to hire 4k tech staff
What's crazy is just a few years ago that TC was only available for IBD. Even if the trajectory is only down after the 1st year bonus, you can hop off after the paycheck. Now that money can only be found in tech.

200k is roughly ICT4 at Apple Ldn which is like 10 years of experience. GP definitely an outlier. Maybe their profile fits a narrative that the bank is pushing.

125 million barrels that's like 6 days worth of US daily consumption. It's crazy how much oil the US consumes on a daily basis.
MafellUser··on Lumber Prices Slump
Not in a while. We don't manufacture sheet goods here, everything is imported. Loads from Europe, loads from China, loads from Russia, so I don't see how the supply can improve in the near future.

British Gypsum (owned by Saint-Gobain, also owner of Jewson) brought some plasterboard manufacturing back onshore, previously they were all imported from Germany, after Brexit. The UK made plasterboards are inferior, very crumbly , don't break cleanly, and they cost more. And that's for something we already have existing manufacturing capacity here. For something 100% imported like sheet goods there's even less chance prices will drop, barring a off-the cliff drop in demand. Importing more from NA won't help much given the weak pound.

Not long back trades ppl had been stockpiling and passed the increased cost onto customer, reaping the profit. When you see plumbers and sparks loading up their vans with plywood you know the market is broken.

MafellUser··on Lumber Prices Slump
Sawn wood is cheap to store but kiln dried and processed much less so. JIT also means you can't just build a lot of warehouses quickly to store them. And we're not even talking about the supply chain disruption, or the bottlenecks in processing green wood.

Even sand is in short supply right now. You can argue sand is even more storable.

MafellUser··on Ask HN: Do you use a physical calculator in your day job, and why?

MafellUser··on Ring Basic Plan 40% Price Increase
> "Extended Video Storage: You can store your Ring videos for up to 180 days. Video storage defaults to 30 days."

They NEVER delete ANY video, just hide your access away. I had some footages way back in 2019 that I could still access, so long as I have the video's uuid.

They also made several updates to reduce image quality (added fake motion blur). The goal I guess was to 'enhance' privacy of passer by but in reality it also means unless the person of interest stands still facing the camera, the footage is worthless as a CCTV device. It's jarring to see crystal clear videos from 2019 vs the blurry mess that is today. I replaced the front door one with an Eufy, it has its own problem but at least it's not a complete POS like the Ring products.

Before people say 'Hey that's can't be true'. It is (sorta):

> In America, the style of grammar used in academic, government, and professional situations is called Standard American English. There is no official government agency in the United States that makes rules for the English language. In fact, the United States does not even have an official language.

While this holds some truth in general it's wrong:

https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/eu...

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/populati...

Net immigration from the EU dropped while total net immigration increased slightly in 2019 before cratering in 2020.

MafellUser··on World's top graduates get new UK visa option
This policy is 100% voter appeasement and only to score political brownie points. If you graduate from a top Uni you'll have no issue getting a Tier 2 sponsorship (which costs less than £1000 per year plus some £200 per case for a company).

So whom are these visas for?

MafellUser··on World's top graduates get new UK visa option
This is just a reversal of a decision by Theresa May's Home Office back in 2012.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/major-changes-to-student-...

They claimed it was to get rid of degree farms where 'schools' can just get students to pay for a degree for a work visa.

MafellUser··on Grade Inflation: Over 82% of Harvard '22 Graduating With Over a 3.7 (A-) GPA
At Columbia you can score an A+ which corresponds to a 4.33. So you can graduate with a 4.33/4.0 GPA [1].

Comparing GPAs across Universities is just pointless.

MafellUser··on The Plan to deliver a digital-first BBC (laying off up to 1k people)
The BBC is one of the few public-type institutions where it enjoys a certain level of independence from the government, since it's mostly funded by the viewers [1]. No matter what you think about the content they produce or the License Fee, this model is vastly different compared to most if not all public broadcasters where the government funds the operation and thus has powers to turn them into propaganda machines. Hungary is a case in point [2].

This government has successfully sabotaged this delicate independence.

MafellUser··on Ford’s first electric F-150 delivery
No, but I don't know what percentage of pickup owners have to do those things often enough to justify owning a pickup. On the other, my tool van is my mobile workshop. Tool banks on the sides, workspace and storage in the middle. If I need to haul a bale, I'd just hook up a 500kg trailer. I'd argue that most van drivers take full advantage of the van, while truck drivers only do so infrequently, and having a truck just because they can.
MafellUser··on Ford’s first electric F-150 delivery
In Europe Ford has plans for an electric Transit with a 230 mile range. Having driven both types of vehicle I don't fully understand American's obsession with the pickups. For the same amount of footprint the Transit holds more stuff in a more secure manner, just a much more practical drive. Is off-roading that important?

MafellUser··on South Korean Workers Turn the Tables on Their Bad Bosses
There's something deep inside the South Korean's psyche where social hierarchy is revered and absolute, yet it's also the same country where they could prosecute people with power (see the example of President Park's impeachment in the article, and to a lesser extent Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong).

Is the tide turning for real this time?

MafellUser··on Ask HN: Is every contracted developer over-employed nowadays?
That's the issue, you care about the quality of your work.

There's no way to black list bad candidates. If they interview well (or the guy they hire interviews well) they'll get the job. Coast the contract for 3 months, collect the pay check then move on.
