Macross8299··on Cross-border credit reporting is at last becoming a reality
Unpopular opinion: someone who welches on their debt SHOULD have their reputation blackened for a reasonably long time.

When you default on your debt, it makes it much much harder on everyone else in the system. All other things being equal, your creditors (and their depositors) have to either accept lower interest rates as result of your irresponsibility or the other debtors have to be squeezed (1+1/n) times as hard, where n is the number of remaining debtors.

I am glad this cross-border credit reporting is becoming a thing, if anything.

The money that banks loan out is not entirely their money.

I bet you anything that the "turn location history off" switch is just a placebo switch.

All it does is send the data with additional flag saying that the data shouldn't be displayed to the end user.

Macross8299··on Katie Bouman, the computer scientist behind the first black hole image
I like how you highlight some admittedly minor commits in big scary red boxes while ignoring technically significant ones like "added function to figure out amt of systematic noise you need to add to get a chi squared of 1",

This is why people say there's sexism in tech bud. A male MIT PhD who was the public face of their project would not be subjected to nearly this much doubt and accusations of being deadweight by insecure 4chan weirdos combing through git logs.

Macross8299··on My Roommate's Tik Tok Fame Made My Life Hell (2018)
Yeah, I've had bad roommates before but my reaction has always been to avoid them and want less to do with them, not invade their privacy and find out more about them. I guess that doesn't make for as interesting social media posts [edit: or advertisements] though.

Oh okay, someone left some glitter in the bathroom so it's okay to root through their shit.

Macross8299··on China says it wants to eliminate Bitcoin mining
Funny that they care about the environmental effects when the end result is something they have little control over, less so when it's a state-run or state-affiliated business
Macross8299··on China says it wants to eliminate Bitcoin mining
From what I understand, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but Bitmain _does_ make money by mining, but they do it by using their own next-generation hardware to mine before making it available for sale, which spikes the difficulty and then they sell it off when the profitability drops.

Manufacturing mining ASICs and running your own mining operations seems like it has these big inherent conflicts of interest to me.

I play guitar and I'm similarly not a fan (most of the time). Someone drunkenly fumbling through wonderwall or whatever in an attempt to impress is not interesting.

>The good life as members of distinct moral communities ... I suspect [answers] will also be less sensational and more nuanced

I really don't know about that. Defining "The good life as a member of a distinct moral community" has lead to all sorts of sensational moral panics of the past. i.e. "what kind of good Christian plays D&D"?

Out of curiosity, what was the startup doing and did you ever get Oblivion running at a 100% similar experience to native? (Bethesda bugs and all)

>the "demonstrate a vulnerability exploit on a live system" game creates greater value than a video game

Right, but there are instances where you can train for that live demonstration, like CTFs in self-contained environments like virtual machines.

Seems pretty similar in scope to a video game to me. I think you're more accurately complaining about games that provide little value beyond the skinner box. What about stuff like Shenzhen I/O, Factorio, etc? You could even make strong case for RTS games teaching transferable skills.

Why not reframe the question to true/false?

Rather than "Are you aware that Google does X?" (which implies that Google does x implicitly) to something like "True/False: Google does X"

Macross8299··on Explaining Sex Rate Changes
>No matter how much you want find a market effect, it's due to _human stuff_, like people's actual lives and problems. There is nothing even close to an economy around sex

This kind of wishy washy thing I'm sure feels nice to say but doesn't seem to me to have any real explanatory power except at an individual level, which is not what this discussion is about.

I bet you anything that if I had access to tinder backend data and a couple of hours to mess around in Python, I could show you the similarity in the supposedly "non-existent" market forces there to well-studied phenomena in the world of economics and finance. Just imagine a lorenz curve describing the # of "swipes" a user gets!

Macross8299··on Making Video Games Is Not a Dream Job
>Because it's technically cheaper to have less workers and to work them for longer hours

That depends on whether fixed costs of hiring another developer (and coordination costs) outweigh the variable costs of the current developers working more. The variable costs could be lesser quality of work when the developer is overworked or overtime laws.

Overtime laws are supposed to act as a penalty on companies for not hiring enough labour for the required task.

Macross8299··on Making Video Games Is Not a Dream Job
In some cases, nepotism isn't even harmful. Plenty of cases where hiring a family member doesn't mean that family member is necessarily unsuited for the job.
Macross8299··on Making Video Games Is Not a Dream Job
Cool idea, but how do you split the profit (assuming this is a world where games are still sold for money)? I'd imagine once you start having discussions about equity distribution and revenue split, it stops being a collective of equals.

My understanding is that pro counter-strike players also have to memorize and practice an obscene amount of nade throws these days just to be competitive since the physics are so predictable and things like flashbangs are so strong.

When I was younger, I'd agree. Was for sure a vidiot but now I don't play much. But programming is more compelling now than playing in someone else's skinner box.

Watching something compile, link and pass all your test cases after you add a new feature is a pretty big dopamine rush in of itself.

>With hockey, or any other professional sport, it doesn't matter if the skills aren't transferable,

Well, if you're making the argument that these pro gamers are worse off because they spent a large portion of their lives for skills that aren't transferable and won't result in a long term career, then if you accept that sports skills aren't transferable as well, same argument would apply to athletes given average NFL career is like 3 years. You could say they are better off because they make a lot more money for that short period of time, but you would also have to consider the odds and expected value of "trying to go pro" given average genetics.

>eSports at this level reminds me of the old circus/carnival freak shows,

I don't think that's really a fair comparison. Most of the appeal of esports is just admiration for someone who's really good at something you enjoy doing.

If you played football or hockey competitively growing up, you have more appreciation of the sport than someone who never did and conversely, it's probably harder for someone who never played to really grasp the nuances or even understand the appeal beyond regional tribalism.

Macross8299··on You Are Not Google (2017)
>I don't know why it is but people seem much more interested in the tech than in the value they can create.

Well, for some engineers who don't have much say in product development, the amount of value they can create is bounded by the business specification/deliverables they have to produce (and maybe equity or lack thereof plays a role here). However, if the architecture is considered their responsibility, then there's a lot of fun in using _shiny new toys_ even if it's overkill and will incur unnecessary technical debt. It's fun to overengineer things.

Not saying it's a good thing or even professional behaviour, but I understand it.

Macross8299··on 93% of Paint Splatters Are Valid Perl Programs
I wonder how much of Perl's decline can be attributed to the Duke-Nukem-Forever-tier delay in releasing perl6.

It seemed like so much of the web ran on it in the late 90s and early 2000s that it would have at least as much traction as PHP does today.

Macross8299··on Show HN: I made a platform for journalists to “open source” their fact checking
>What they shouldn't run the story at all?

Well, I think as you get more and more degrees removed from a primary source, the closer the article gets to being gossip and/or somebody's opinion and not factual news. Which is fine, there's a market for stuff like that. But I don't think that's very sustainable if you want to maintain a reputation as a purveyor of fact-based reporting.

There's a reason hearsay isn't generally admissable in a court of law.
